When doing pursuits or time trials, use this line as a guide. ¨ The red “sprinter’s line” defines the border of the sprint lane. Whilst planning is in place for the 2021 TT season which hopefully will commence in mid-March, nothing is guaranteed in these ever-changing times. We were able to celebrate 2019 successes with the Annual Trophy presentation being held at Freeland Village Hall, with a buffet supper catered by Paul Allday. Seven mountain runners participated in this study. They competed in vertical (VR), 10-25 km, 25-45 km and >45 km races. The HR response was measured during the races to calculate the exercise intensity and PL according to the HR at which both the ventilatory (VT) and respiratory compensation threshold (RCT) occurred. The exercise intensity below VT and between VT and RCT increased with mountain running race distance. Likewise, the percentage of racing time spent above RCT decreased when race duration increased. However, the time spent above RCT was similar between races (~50 min). The PL was significantly higher (p<.05) during the longest races (145.0±18.4, 288.8±72.5, 467.3±109.9 and 820.8±147.0 AU in VR, 10-25 km, 25-45 km and >45 km, respectively). The ratio of PL to accumulative altitude gain was similar in all races (~0.16 AU·m-1).

Abstract There are thousands of young drivers racing go karts and in the lower formulas, all hoping to make careers as professional racers. At the other end of the spectrum, there are 22 drivers on the Formula One grid each year, and only one of them can become world champion. Clearly, the odds are stacked against anyone becoming a professional driver in F1 or any of the other major racing series: IndyCar, NASCAR, DTM, etc. Learning the skills needed to compete at such a high level requires years of practice and the investment of hundreds of thousands of dollars. And even after all that, nothing is guaranteed. This paper explores that difficult path to the top, both the traditional route from karting through the various formulas, and a new option: simulator-based training and racing, which is quickly proving to be a viable—if still rare—route for young drivers. Advanced simulator technology is making racing more accessible, but even with the new technology, drivers still need support to make the most of it. Virtual Racing School (VRS) was created to provide that support to the next generation of motorsport champions. From analyzing and interpreting telemetry to tracking performance and trends to developing personalized training plans, VRS is being developed to assist drivers from the moment they take their first laps on a simulator all the way through a successful on-track racing career. It is a long, difficult and expensive road… While the technology of racing cars has advanced significantly over the past few decades, the methods for identifying driver talent have not.

  • Lifestyle, Identity and Young People's Experiences of Mountain Biking
Freeride area at Bedgebury Forest Research Note Lifestyle, identity and young people’s experiences of mountain biking Katherine King December 2010 It has been widely recognised that, for young people, experiencing the natural environment may hold multiple benefits for well-being and the future development of healthy lifestyles. The Active England programme awarded funding aimed at increasing participation in sport and physical activity at Bedgebury Forest in Kent, with a particular emphasis on young people as a key target group. Mountain biking, as a popular youth sport that often occurs in woodlands, was promoted under the scheme and provides the case study upon which this Note is based. The research employed ethnographic techniques to capture youth experiences and understandings of mountain biking and to investigate the resulting relation- ships young people developed with countryside spaces. Methods included semi-structured interviews that allowed for flexibility, ‘mobile’ methods such as accompanied and unaccompanied recorded rides and participant observation. The research reveals the different riding philosophies, lifestyle values and relationships with the landscape that are formed as part of youth mountain biking lifestyles. The research shows that certain countryside spaces, especially woodlands are important for youth leisure. They afford a space away from the gaze of adults and from the conflicts associated with other (urban) leisure space, and provide opportunities to feel ownership. Bedgebury Forest offered a range of ‘ready made’ mountain biking spaces for both beginner and more experienced youth mountain bikers that participants could access without fear of reprimand. This was in sharp contrast to their experiences of other privately owned spaces.
