Taphonomy of Oligo-Miocene Fossil Sites of the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, Australia

Buenos Aires, 30-12-2004 ISSN 0002-7014 Taphonomy of Oligo-Miocene fossil sites of the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, Australia Mina BASSAROVA1 Abstract. Taphonomic analyses were carried out on six sites from the Riversleigh World Heritage Area fossil deposits of northwestern Queensland, Australia. The six sites range in age from late Oligocene to late Miocene and possibly younger. A diverse fossil fauna has been found at these sites, but in this study, only mammalian remains were considered. The aim was to assess the biological and ecological informa- tion obtainable from these sites in anticipation of a palaeoecological study of the sites. To determine if fos- sils from each site were locally derived, specimens were examined for abrasion, breakage, weathering, ev- idence of digestion or scavenging, and skeletal part representation. Age-class distribution analysis of sev- eral peramelemorphians and a subfamily of macropodids was carried out for one of the sites to determine if the mortality profile might be attritional or catastrophic. Vertebrate remains from the six sites are dis- articulated and, in combination with the lack of bone weathering, this suggests rapid burial in moist con- ditions. The majority of specimens are unweathered, unabraded, have a wide range of transport poten- tials and, at this stage, are not suspected to have significant predator/scavenger biases. These sites are therefore interpreted to be autochthonous assemblages. The age-class distribution analysis indicates attri- tional accumulation, however exact duration of accumulation can not be ascertained. Resumen. Revision in the diprotodontid marsupial genus Neohelos: Systematics and biostratigraphy KAREN H. BLACK, MICHAEL ARCHER, SUZANNE J. HAND, and HENK GODTHELP Black, K.H., Archer, M., Hand, S.J., and Godthelp, H. 2013. Revision in the diprotodontid marsupial genus Neohelos: Systematics and biostratigraphy. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 58 (4): 679–706. Neohelos is a geographically and temporally widespread genus of Cenozoic diprotodontid marsupials commonly used to biocorrelate otherwise undated Australian fossil deposits. Here, we revise the genus and describe two new species from the Riversleigh World Heritage Area of northwestern Queensland. Neohelos solus sp. nov. is a small, relatively abundant, plesiomorphic form, while the rarer, larger Neohelos davidridei sp. nov. is the most derived species of the genus with an upper premolar morphology that is structurally antecedant to members of the Late Miocene genus Kolopsis. Additional material of Neohelos tirarensis and Neohelos stirtoni is described. A chronological morphocline is evidenced by a grad− ual change in morphology accompanied by an increase in size from Ne. tirarensis through Ne. stirtoni to Ne. davidridei, and is generally consistent with the biostratigraphic distribution of Neohelos species throughout Riversleigh’s faunal zones A to D. Stage of evolution biocorrelation of Neohelos species confirms that some of Riversleigh’s Faunal Zone A deposits are Late Oligocene in age and predate the Wipajiri Formation of South Australia. Strong faunal correlations exist between Riversleigh’s topographically low to middle Faunal Zone C deposits and the Northern Territory’s Middle Mio− cene Bullock Creek Local Fauna. The presence of the highly derived N. davidridei in the Jaw Junction Local Fauna of Riversleigh’s Upper Faunal Zone C suggests a later Middle Miocene (post−Bullock Creek) age for this deposit. -

A revised faunal list and geological setting for Bullock Creek, a Camfieldian site from the Northern Territory of Australia. Memoirs of Museum Victoria 74: 263–290. The Camfield beds, in which the Bullock Creek Local Fauna occurs, is a freshwater carbonate unit deposited in a braided-meandering river environment in which abandoned channels formed oxbow lakes. Fossil quarries in the Small Hills outcrop occur in stratigraphically superposed beds. Despite this, there are no detectable changes to the fauna obtained at different levels that demonstrate a significant biochronologic time difference. Within the small mammal fauna, macropodoids are the most abundant group at Bullock Creek. Two species have been described, Balbaroo camfieldensis and Nambaroo bullockensis. A number of other macropodid taxa are also present. A diverse ‘possum’ fauna is found here, in addition to the miralinids Barguru maru and Barguru kayir, including the phalangerid Wyulda sp. cf. asherjoeli. Arena, John Scanlon, Neville Pledge, and Jenni Thurmer ABSTRACT Miminipossum notioplanetes represents a new Early/Middle Miocene family (Miminipossumidae) of phalangeridan possums recovered from the Two Trees Local Fauna from the Riversleigh World Heritage area in northwestern Queensland and the Kutjamarpu Local Fauna of the Tirari Desert in northern South Australia. Because of widespread convergence in key features of P3 and M1 among phalangeridan families, the interfamilial relationships of Miminipossumidae are uncertain. The age of the Kutja- marpu Local Fauna has been in doubt with estimates ranging from Late Oligocene to Middle Miocene. The new taxon raises to 15 the number of taxa in the Kutjamarpu Local Fauna that are shared with both Riversleigh’s Faunal Zone B (Early Miocene) and Riversleigh’s Faunal Zone C (Middle Miocene) assemblages. Although there is rel- atively little biocorrelative support for the estimate of a Late Oligocene age, doubt remains about whether the age is more likely to be Early or Middle Miocene. In terms of palaeoenvironmental implications, because both Riversleigh’s Early and Middle Mio- cene assemblages have been concluded to have accumulated in temperate, wet, spe- cies-rich lowland forests, the same or similar Early/Middle Miocene palaeoenvironments may well have extended into central Australia at the time when the Kutjamarpu assemblage was accumulating. Bamford Consulting Ecologists 23 Plover Way Kingsley WA 6026 28th March 2019 Bellevue Gold Project - Fauna Assessment Executive Summary Introduction Bamford Consulting Ecologists (BCE) was commissioned by Bellevue Gold Limited to conduct a Level 2 fauna assessment (desktop review and field investigation) for the Bellevue/Tribune Gold project. The project is located approximately 40 kilometres (km) north of Leinster, 120km south of Wiluna and 400km north-west of Kalgoorlie in the Shire of Leonora Western Australia. The project development area covers 544 hectares (ha) and is situated in Mining Tenement M36/25 and Exploration Licence E36/535. Preliminary geological investigations have identified a high- grade gold and nickel district on the prolific Wiluna-Norseman gold belt. It is proposed to develop the underground deposit to a depth of 500 metres (m). The purposes of this report are to provide information on the fauna values of the survey area, particularly for significant species, an overview of the ecological function of the site within the local and regional context, and to provide discussion on the interaction of development on the site with these fauna values and functions. The Identification of Oligo-Miocene Mammalian Palaeocommunities
The identification of Oligo-Miocene mammalian palaeocommunities from the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, Australia and an appraisal of palaeoecological techniques Troy J. Myers, Karen H. Black, Michael Archer and Suzanne J. Hand Palaeontology, Geobiology and Earth Archives (PANGEA) Research Centre, School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW, Australia ABSTRACT Fourteen of the best sampled Oligo-Miocene local faunas from the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, north-western Queensland, Australia are analysed using classification and ordination techniques to identify potential mammalian palaeocommunities and palaeocommunity types. Abundance data for these faunas are used, for the first time, in conjunction with presence/absence data. An early Miocene Faunal Zone B and two middle Miocene Faunal Zone C palaeocommunities are recognised, as well as one palaeocommunity type. Change in palaeocommunity structure, between the early Miocene and middle Miocene, may be the result of significant climate change during the Miocene Carbon Isotope Excursion. The complexes of local faunas identified will allow researchers to use novel palaeocommunities in future analyses of Riversleigh’s fossil faunas. The utility of some palaeoecological multivariate indices and techniques is examined. The Dice index is found to outperform other binary similarity/distance coefficients, while the UPGMA algorithm is more useful than neighbour joining.
