To Notices in the Canton Repository 1850-1875 Index to Notices in the Canton Repository 1850-1875 Published by Stark County District Library Canton, Ohio April 2011 Index to Notices in the Canton Repository, 1850-1875 The following is an alphabetical listing, by surname, of notices that were published in the Canton, Ohio, newspaper, the Repository, from January 1850 to December 1879. The index covers marriage, death, divorce and administration notices. There are also a few others included. It was compiled by library staff and volunteers in the hope that the book would be a useful tool to genealogists, as well as other researchers. To use this index, simply look up the name of the person whose notice you wish to find. The entries will appear as follows: ABENDSHEIN* John MAR Feb 27 1874 3 4 *AUBENSHIEN The first column is the individual’s SURNAME. The second gives the person’s given name and (title) if one is used. The type of record is shown in column three. The fourth column is the issue date of the Repository. The fifth and sixth columns tell the page and column number where the notice is located. Any additional information appears in the last column. If no county name appears, then the person resided in Stark County. You may find one name with several listings showing different dates and locations in the paper. This indicates multiple listings for that individual. Clinton letoting Biggjs General Clinton Levering Riggs, the President of the Mary- land Historical Society, died suddenly on Sunday night, Sep- tember 11, 1938, in the Union Memorial Hospital from heart disease, in the 73rd year of his age. He was buried from his home in Baltimore on Tuesday, September thirteenth. Although he was born in New York, September 13, 1866, his family for many generations, dating back to the seventeenth century, had been identified with Maryland public and social life. His father was Lawrason Kiggs, and his mother before her marriage was Mary Turpin Bright, the daughter of Senator Jesse Bright of Indiana.

Lower was the first in modern times to break ground in the domain of family nomenclature— in 1842, when he published his iirst edition of " English Surnames." There were in it many mistakes, and the work was tentative. A better book of his was " Patronymica Britannica," a dictionary of family names that appeared in i860. But the share of scientific research first entered the soil with Canon Isaac Taylor's " Words and Places," 1864. Since then there have been various works on the subject, some good, some bad, some instructive, others misleading there have been treatises on Irish and Scottish, and on particular county names. Mr. R. Ferguson, in his " English Surnames and their Place in the Teutonic Family," 1858, and " Surnames as a Science," 1883, and *' The Teutonic Name-System applied to Familv Names in France, England, and Germany," 1864, went too far in deriving most surnames from Teutonic roots, led thereto by Forstemann's " Alt- deutsches Namenbuch " (Nordhausen, 1856), a vast work that has been condensed by Heintze in *' Die Deutschen Familien- namen " (Halle, 1882).^ Mr.
