Robert M. La Follette School of Public Policy Commencement Address May 19, 2013 Bob Lang Thank you for inviting me to be a part of the celebration of your commencement -- graduation from the University of Wisconsin's Robert M. La Follette School of Public Policy. I have had the privilege of serving in Wisconsin's Legislative Fiscal Bureau with many La Follette graduates, including the 10 who are currently colleagues of mine at the Bureau. I am honored to be with you today. ____________________________ I have two favorite commencement speeches. The first, written 410 years ago, was not delivered to a graduating class, but rather, to an individual. It was, however, a commencement address in the true meaning of the word -- that is to recognize a beginning -- a transition from the present to the future. And, in the traditional sense of commencement speeches, was filled with advice. The speech was given by a father to his son, in Shakespeare's Hamlet. Polonius, chief councilor to Denmark's King Claudius, gives his son Laertes sage advice as the young man patiently waits for his talkative father to complete his lengthy speech and bid him farewell before the son sets sail for France to Page 1 continue his studies. "Those friends thou hast, grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel." "Give every man thine ear, but few thy voice." "Neither a borrower nor a lender be." "This above all, to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man." The second of my favorite commencement addresses was delivered to a graduating college class by Thornton Mellen. -

The Outward Turn: Personality, Blankness, and Allure in American Modernism Anne Claire Diebel Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Anne Claire Diebel All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Outward Turn: Personality, Blankness, and Allure in American Modernism Anne Claire Diebel The history of personality in American literature has surprisingly little to do with the differentiating individuality we now tend to associate with the term. Scholars of nineteenth- and twentieth-century American culture have defined personality either as the morally vacuous successor to the Protestant ideal of character or as the equivalent of mass-media celebrity. In both accounts, personality is deliberately constructed and displayed. However, hiding in American writings of the long modernist period (1880s–1940s) is a conception of personality as the innate capacity, possessed by few, to attract attention and elicit projection. Skeptical of the great American myth of self-making, such writers as Henry James, Theodore Dreiser, Gertrude Stein, Nathanael West, and Langston Hughes invented ways of representing individuals not by stable inner qualities but by their fascinating—and, often, gendered and racialized—blankness. For these writers, this sense of personality was not only an important theme and formal principle of their fiction and non-fiction writing; it was also a professional concern made especially salient by the rise of authorial celebrity. This dissertation both offers an alternative history of personality in American literature and culture and challenges the common critical assumption that modernist writers took the interior life to be their primary site of exploration and representation. -

Examines major periods of experimentation and innovation in the 20th and 21st centuries, from the settlement house movement of the early 1900s to recent efforts to revive the public mission of universities through service-learning and other forms of civic education. This course is an activity-based learning course, limited to students who are concurrently participating in one of PBHA’s education-related service programs. Class discussions and assignments will make active links with students’ service work. Enrollment capped at 12. Course Overview This course explores a variety of attempts of students and faculty to engage their communities in educational programs from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. Today, the widely accepted model for university outreach programs is based on the concept of reciprocity: the notion that members of the university and the neighboring community both benefit from their joint endeavors. But this has not always been the case. -

Tabors: A Voice for the "Least of These:" Eleanor Roosevelt's Servant Le Servant Leadership: Theory & Practice Volume 5, Issue 1, 13-24 Spring 2018 A Voice for the “Least of These:” Eleanor Roosevelt’s Servant Leadership Christy Tabors, Hardin-Simmons University Abstract Greenleaf (2002/1977), the source of the term “servant leadership,” acknowledges a lack of nurturing or caring leaders in all types of modern organizations. Leaders and potential future leaders in today’s society need servant leader role-models they can study in order to develop their own servant leadership. In this paper, the author explores Eleanor Roosevelt’s life using Spears’ (2010) ten characteristics of servant leadership as an analytical lens and determines that Roosevelt functioned as a servant leader throughout her lifetime. The author argues that Eleanor Roosevelt’s servant leadership functions as a timeless model for leaders in modern society. Currently, a lack of literature exploring the direct link between Eleanor Roosevelt and servant leadership exists. The author hopes to fill in this gap and encourage others to contribute to this area of study further. Overall, this paper aims at providing practical information for leaders, particularly educational leaders, to utilize in their development of servant leadership, in addition to arguing why Eleanor Roosevelt serves as a model to study further in the field of servant leadership. Roosevelt. 32d President of the United States was born in this home on January 30. 1882. He was the only child of James and Sara Roosevelt. Franklin Roosevelt spent much of his life here. Here Franklin-the toddler. the little boy. the young man-was shaped and grew to maturity. Here he brought his bride. Eleanor. in 1905. and here they raised their five children. From here he began his political career that stretched from the New York State Senate to the White House. Roose- velt was a State senator. 1911-13. Assistant Sec- retary of the Navy under Woodrow Wilson. 1913- 20. and unsuccessful vice-presidential candidate in 1920. Then. in 1921. he contracted infantile paralysis. During his struggle to conquer the disease he spent much time here. He refused to become an invalid and reentered politics. He was elected Governor of New York in 1928 and 1930 and President of the United States in 1932. As Governor and President. he came here as often as he could for respite from the turmoil of public life. On April 15. 1945. 3 days after his death in Warm Springs. Ga.. President Roosevelt was buried in the family rose garden. Seventeen years later. on November 10. 1962. Mrs. Roosevelt was buried beside the President. -

Introduction This photograph was taken of vice presidential candidate Richard Nixon relaxing with his pet dog, Checkers, in 1952. In his famous “Checkers” speech, Nixon refuted accusations that he had misused campaign contributions. He emphasized his family’s modest means, claiming that his wife, Pat, wore not a mink coat but “a respectable Republican cloth coat.” On September 23, 1952, California senator Richard Nixon reserved a spot on television to deliver the most important speech of his career. With this address, Nixon hoped to squash rumors that he had accepted $18,000 in illegal political contributions to finance personal expenses. The Republicans had recently nominated Nixon to run for vice president on Dwight D. Eisenhower’s ticket. When these charges against Nixon became public, Eisenhower was noncommittal — he did not drop Nixon from the ticket, but he also did not defend him. In his speech, Nixon said, “Not one cent of the $18,000 or any other money of that type ever went to me for my personal use. Every penny of it was used to pay for political expenses that I did not think should be charged to the taxpayers of the © 2020 Teachers' Curriculum Institute Level: A T H E R I S E A N D F A L L O F... Richard Nixon's Drug War: Politics over Pragmatism Edmund Carlton April 20, 2012 Abstract: This thesis is an historical observation Richard Nixon's role as the instigator of America's Drug War. This Drug War is a war fought both against international drug smugglers and America's own citizens. This thesis will summarize some major trends of the politicization of the drug issue and give an in-depth analysis of how race played a role in both winning Richard Nixon the presidency in 1968 as well as how that victory has inflected itself back on to the American race dynamic. This thesis will utilize the substantial wealth of academic publications on the subject and will serve as a survey of sorts of the major drug politic academia discussing the years 1967-1972. I will also be utilizing films from this era in order to illustrate the social and race dynamic that were being negotiated in post-Civil Rights Act America. This thesis will utilize two primary documents from Richard Nixon, a Reader's Digest article from October, 1967, and a pivotal message to Congress given on July 14th, 1969 which accompanied the proposal of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act which was passed a year later in 1970.
