Church History Church History and and Religious Culture 99 (2019) 465–484 Religious Culture brill.com/chrc A Two- and a Threefold Cord Martin Statius on Mixed Marriages and Interconfessional Relationships Johannes Müller Leiden University [email protected] Abstract Religious coexistence and even mixed marital unions were an undeniable reality in many parts of early modern Europe. Despite occasional harsh criticisms by the clergy, church authorities often had no choice than to silently accept religious diversity as an embarrassing fact of life. This article addresses the rare case of the Danzig Lutheran preacher Martin Statius (1589–1655), who tried to articulate well-balanced guidelines for the question of how to deal with religious diversity in public and private spaces. In order to create a theological framework for the discussion of this problem, Statius distinguished between three forms of human love: “natural, civic and spiritual.” Cat- egorizing love and friendship in this manner enabled Statius to bridge the deep gap between theological ideals and the unruly reality of everyday life and offers an illu- minating insight into confessional discourses and their relation to the social reality in multiconfessional cities. ABSTRACT The history of the British Army in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars is generally associated with stories of British military victory and the campaigns of the Duke of Wellington. An intrinsic aspect of the historiography is the argument that, following British defeat in the Low Countries in 1795, the Army was transformed by the military reforms of His Royal Highness, Frederick Duke of York. This thesis provides a critical appraisal of the reform process with reference to the organisation, structure, ethos and learning capabilities of the British Army and evaluates the impact of the reforms upon British military performance in the Low Countries, in the period 1793 to 1814, via a series of narrative reconstructions. This thesis directly challenges the transformation argument and provides a re-evaluation of British military competency in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. -

Knowledge and Auctoritas in Coornhert’s Zedekunst Julie Rogiest (Ghent University) Introduction In 1586, one of the most important works of the Dutch philosopher Dirck Coornhert, Zedekunst dat is wellevenskunste or The art of the virtuous life,1 was first published2. This work was the first systematized form of ethics ever to have been written in the Dutch language. Apart from that, the text also provides us with a full overview of the philosophical and moral program of its writer. This program, which earned Coornhert the title of « the sixteenth century champion of moral perfectionism »3, can be rendered by three important lines of thought that also make out the core of the rest of his impressive œuvre:4 moral perfectibility5, the search for Truth and moderation in all things “human”6. As I hope to show, the right sort of knowledge plays a central part in Coornhert’s perfectibilist project, and this mostly with regard to the good management of the human emotions or “hartstochten”, which necessarily underlies the virtuous life or “welleven”. ‘Elke daad is een werk’ Alexander Comrie (1706-1774) over de verschillen tussen de remonstrantse en de gereformeerde rechtvaardigingsleer G.A. van den Brink Abstract The Dutch theologian Alexander Comrie (1706-1774) opposed Amyraldism vehemently. He downplayed the role of the act of faith in justification, for ‘every act is a work of man.’ However, Comrie offended many of his colleagues by suggesting that anyone who regarded the act of faith as the instrument involved in justification, was dogmatically speaking to be considered an amyraldian or even an arminian. Comrie was, in turn, accused of antinomianism. In this article the dogmatic position of Comrie is analyzed. His view on the material cause and especially on the formal cause of justification is compared with the views by Arminius, Lubbertus and others. It is concluded that Comrie mistakenly regarded the immediacy of the imputation of Christ’s righteousness as fundamental for the Reformed doctrine of justification. 1 Inleiding Toen de Schots-Nederlandse theoloog Alexander Comrie (1706-1774)1 in 1753 zijn verklaring van Zondag 1-7 van de Heidelbergse Catechismus publi- ceerde, brak er een storm van protest los. St Boniface Antwerpen A history of the Anglican Church in Antwerp Introduction St. Boniface Church has roots going back to the 16th Century, deep into Antwerp's history and that of Anglicanism. Antwerp then was a metropolis of world class, the most important trading and financial centre in Western Europe, as a seaport, the spice trade, money and wool markets. There are many paths down which one can go in this history of the Church. In 2010, our church celebrated its centenary and work on much needed major repairs, to preserve the heritage of this beautiful Church, commenced. A few years ago, St. Boniface became a recognized State Monument, but even before that it was, and is, always open for pre-arranged visits and conducted tours. Prior to April 1910, the British Community's Services were held at the "Tanner's Chapel" loaned to them by the authorities, and named from the French "Chapelle des Tanneurs" (Huidevettersstraat), after the street of that name, and this remained the Anglican Church in Antwerp from 1821 until St. Boniface was built and consecrated. Building St. Boniface in the Grétrystraat The history of St. Boniface as it now stands began on June 23rd, 1906, in the presence of a large number of Belgian and British notables, when the foundation stone of the Church was laid with much ceremony, by the British Minister to Belgium, Sir Arthur Hardinge. It attracted attention across Britain and drew not just statesmen and diplomats but also soldiers, merchants, religious refugees, journalists, travellers and students into the confl ict. Hugh Dunthorne draws on pamphlet literature to reveal how British contemporaries viewed the progress of their near neigh- bours’ rebellion, and assesses the lasting impact which the Revolt and the rise of the Dutch Republic had on Britain’s domestic history. The meaning and significance of ‘water’ in the Antwerp cityscapes (c. 1550-1650 AD) Julia Dijkstra1 Scholars have often described the sixteenth century as This essay starts with a short history of the rise of the ‘golden age’ of Antwerp.
