July 30, 2008 Dear Hyde Park Neighborhood Association, Beginning in October, City of Austin residential customers will have a new way to recycle — Single Stream Recycling. Single Stream is an improved, more efficient way to collect your recycling. Paper, plastic, glass, aluminum and metal cans will all go into one cart with no sorting. Single Stream also means more items will be accepted; rigid plastics #1-#7 and boxboard which includes cereal and soda boxes. Solid Waste Services (SWS) will begin the distribution of the new 90-gallon recycling carts in October 2008. Because the carts will hold more material, collection will occur every other week, meaning fewer trucks on the road, reduced emissions and improved air quality. In addition, this new method of collection will provide Premier greater safety for our employees. PRRealty Premier SWS is very excited to provide this improved service. To help

Pecan Press — September, 2008 — Page 15 Poetry Readings at NeWorlDeli ince February, the Austin Poetry Society has spon- Ssored a monthly open-microphone poetry reading in Hyde Park. The reading is on the fourth Thursday of each month, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Ne- WorlDeli, 4101 Guadalupe, and many people attend just to listen while they eat. Hyde Park Poets are especially welcome to come and read their poems. In April, the evening was ded- icated to the memory of Albert Huffstickler, the late Poet Laureate of Hyde Park and long-time poetry ed- itor for the Pecan Press. Thirty-four poets and friends of Huff gathered to read his poems, poems about him, and poems inspired by his teaching. Each meeting begins with fifteen or twenty min- utes of poetry from a featured poet, always a member of the Austin Poetry Society, but readers in the open mic are not required to be members. After the fea- tured reader, everyone takes turns reading two poems Jim-Dandy Service apiece in order by a sign-up sheet. There are no rules "More than just handy" as to the form of the poetry, but the Deli is for fami- ly dining so poets are required to keep their readings 763-1007 clean and preferably fun for kids. IHuff had once written a poem with fairly precise details about what he wanted done with his ashes, specify- ing that they should be scattered in a nondescript ravine somewhere outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico, a city he had visited often and loved. For six years Sylvia had wanted to take him home but had never had the op- portunity to go to Santa Fe. The next day I told another of Huff’s friends, Valerie Inman, the story. Valerie’s face took on a mystical glow, and she said, I’m going to Santa Fe on April 26. That was the moment when I started feeling eerie But there’s more. Head Over Heels

A poet sings of love. You can’t help it. If not that, you wouldn’t sing at all. Even when love means trying to figure out what you did wrong, it’s better than sliding into doing something worse. Now and then you get a chance to grab the string of that red balloon and let it lift you toward someone smiling down from clouds of beauty. — Robert Ely Cogswell
