Moynihan, a longtime supporter of Boston community programs and the Irish-American community, has been chosen as the CEO of Bank of America. The 50-year-old Moynihan replaces Ken- neth Lewis, who announced in September that he would retire at the end of 2009 from the Charlotte, N.C.-headquartered bank. Moynihan, who chaired the successful 2009 American Ireland Fund dinner in Boston, has long been seen as a leader in the regional financial world. Ohio-born, he is a lawyer who joined Bank of America in 2004 when it acquired FleetBoston Financial Corp. He has held a number of leadership positions at the bank, most recently serving as president of consumer and small busi- ness banking. “Brian’s wide range of experience, his relationships inside and outside of the company, and his demon- strated ability to understand business dynamics and effect constructive change, made him the best person for the position,” said Walter E. Massey, Bank of America’s chairman in a release. ••• Now that “Brothers,” the Jim Sheridan-directed film about a soldier who is thought to have been killed in Afghanistan, is in theaters and receiving critical acclaim, there has been a buzz that the Irish writer-director will now turn his attention back to “Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob.” Sheridan, who has been nominated six times for an Academy NESN Commentator, Heidi Watney; DKM band members: Scruffy Wallace, James Lynch, Ken Casey, Tim Award, had the project on his 2009 schedule until Brennan and Matt Kelly. Photo by Marc Deley “Brothers,” which stars Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal. But with “Brothers” now in theaters, the questions about the fate of “Black Mass,” which was going to be filmed in Boston last year, have resurfaced. Based on the book by award-winning former Boston Globe writers Gerard O’Neill and Dick Lehr, “Black Mass,” is the story, among other things, of Whitey Bulger and former FBI agent John Connolly. The flick’s script was penned by Sheridan, which would point to his staying with the project. However, the movie’s producers had no comment. ••• Boston-based rockers The Dropkick Murphys have started a charity, the Claddagh Fund, and used arrival of a temporary hockey rink on the field at Fenway Park as the impetus for the charity’s first fundraiser. The band’s founder, Ken Casey, started the fun to support area non-profits that work on be- half of children, veterans, and those suffering from alcohol and drug addiction. All 250 tickets ,priced at $150 each, sold out in a matter of minutes, according Brian Moynihan to the newly established fund’s spokeswoman. The Claddagh Fund Skate in the Park was held on Dec. 19 and drew a number of local notables in- cluding Bruins legends Derek Sanderson, Terry O’Reilly, Jay Miller and Lydon Byers; Clinton, Mass., native Scott Young, who won a Stanley Cup championship with the Pittsburgh Penguins; NESN TV talent Heidi Watney and Charlie Moore; Re- publican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker, UFC star Kenny Florian; actor-writer Kevin Jim Brett, president and CEO of the New England Council is pictured Chapman; and former world champ boxer “Irish” with President Obama during a recent event at the White House. RoBERT CuLHANE . MOST REV. FATHER PATRICK MURRAY (1865-1959) SUPERIOR GENERAL, C.SS.R., 1909-1947. BIOGRAPHICAL OUTLINE OVER THE YEARS I865-1909. INTRODUCTION. Sir Peter Lely was at his best when painting court beauties. He knew, too, how to play his cards with people that mattered. A favourite at the court of Charles I and of Charles II; he was still in favour during the Commonwealth. During this period his ability and tact stood one unusual test. Oliver Cromwell (according to a story evidently not maimed in the telling) charged him to include in· his portrait cc all these roughnesses, pim ples, and watts, and everything you see, otherwise I will never pay a farthing for it ». Father Patrick Murray was obliged to suffer the attentions of a photo grapher on a few occasions. Nothing would have annoyed him more than :> literary portrait, especially one leaning somewhat on his merits. cc 1 know n he said once, « that a necrology, with an account of one's virtues, is prescribed but I do hope that I will be spared one n. Fortunately in the past obedience to like wishes has been more honoured in the breach than in the observance. Had it not been so the world would have been the poorer for much of the literature that has nourished and improved millions. Literature is meant to express excellence. Let it not be thought for a moment that literature, even of the humblest type, is offered in the following pages. Apart from other considerations the circumstances of their composi tion prevent any such claim.

Estudios Irlandeses, Issue 16, 2021, pp. 221-223 https://doi.org/10.24162/EI2021-10070 ___________________________________________________________________________AEDEI LITERARY AND CULTURAL EVENTS IN IRELAND ANNUAL REPORT – 2020 Christina Hunt Mahony Copyright (c) 2021 by Christina Hunt Mahony. This text may be archived and redistributed both in electronic form and in hard copy, provided that the author and journal are properly cited and no fee is charged for access. As this is the year remarkable for all the things that did not happen, it is important to remember, and to prize, all those literary, artistic and cultural events which did happen – often against great odds. And, just as there was stark inequity in the fortunes of different kinds of businesses during the pandemic, some areas of cultural activity fared far better than others. Publishing and book selling has had to adjust to our new reality, and although the cherished Irish tradition of the book launch has gone the way of live theatre, cinema-going and indoor concerts, the book trade flourishes. As do the prize giving processes. Recent major publications in Irish Studies include a flurry of new collections of short stories, most notably Kevin Barry’s, That Old Country Music. Sinead Gleeson has also produced yet another impressive anthology, a whacking great collection of 100 Irish short stories, weighing in at 1200 grams, and containing more than 800 pages of stories by classic writers and newcomers alike – The Art of the Glimpse – perfect for a Covid winter. A volume that will fit much more snugly in the hand or the pocket is Roy Foster’s On Seamus Heaney, the latest in the excellent Princeton University Press series of Writers on Writers.

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: BASEBALL, CITIZENSHIP, AND NATIONAL IDENTITY IN GEORGE W. BUSH’S AMERICA Ryan Edward King‐White, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Dissertation directed by: Professor David L. Andrews Department of Kinesiology The four separate, but related, studies within this research project seek to offer a critical understanding for how American national identit(ies), and particular forms of (cultural) citizenship are discursively constructed and performed in and through the sport of baseball. More specifically, this dissertation will utilize and expand upon critical theories of neoliberalism, citizenship, whiteness, and (physical) cultural studies to engage various empirical sites, which help provide the context for everyday life in contemporary America. Each chapter looks at various empirical aspects of the Little League World Series and the fans of the Boston Red Sox (popularly referred to as Red Sox Nation) that have historically privileged particular performances and behaviors often associated with white, American, heterosexual, upper‐middle class, masculine subject‐positions. In the first instance this project also attempts to describe how ‘normalized’ American citizenship is being (re)shaped in and through the sport of baseball. Secondly, I aim to critically evaluate claims made by both Little League Baseball, and the Boston Red Sox organization, in response to (popular) criticisms (Bryant, 20002; Mosher, 2001a, 2001b, 2001c) of regressive activity and behavior historically related to their organizations, that they
