While Providence College students and faculty were enjoying spring break last week, the state of Rhode Island was dealing with major pushback following reports of the impact of newly installed school-zone speed cameras in the capital city. The speed cameras—initially approved by Rhode Island lawmakers through the passage of the Automated School-Zone- Speed Enforcement Act in 2016— are allowed to be installed within a quarter-mile of any school in the city. Through the use of these cameras, tickets are issued for vehicles caught operating at least 11 miles per hour over the designated speed limit Monday through Saturday between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. The minimum fee for any speed violation starts at $95. Almost 80 students and faculty members from Providence College’s Liberal Arts Honors Program spent their spring break in Florence, Italy. The program chooses a new destination every year, usually a city in Europe. The program was centered mostly in Florence but included excursions to Rome, Siena, San Gimignano, and Lucca. While taking in the art, architecture, and food of the so-called “cradle of the Renaissance,” many students opted to explore the Piazza del Duomo. Located in the center of the city of Florence, the plaza is marked by the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, otherwise known as “Il Duomo di Firenze.” With the purchase of one ticket for 18 euros, tourists are given a 72-hour window to see the inside of the cathedral, climb the dome (with a reservation), explore the Baptistery, and tour the Duomo museum. The Duomo still serves as an active Roman Catholic church, and daily Masses are offered before and after museum hours. This offers faithful Catholics an incredible opportunity to attend mass in the basilica while taking in the ornate Gothic and Renaissance artwork which decorates it. The Catterdrale di Santa Maria del Flore, or “Il Duomo di Firenze,” is a major ourist attraction in Florence. Flipping the switch reveals a universe in motes of dust. They hang in the heavy air, immobile but active. Scintillating like a thousand stars that have appeared to fill the foyer, they seem to wish that only I could see them. And simply flicking a switch can reveal such wonders. These galaxies upon galaxies of fluttering specks are a miracle to me, and so too is the light which shines on them, like the moon does a midnight sky. I can illuminate them with the simplest movement, and thus am like the god of their tiny universe, who has the power to utter, “Let there be light” with a mere wave of my hand. Without me, these specks of dust are nothing. They will never be noticed or pondered, and their simplicity will pale before my complex majesty. But then, I also am like a speck of dust, trapped in a universe of my own. I am lost in an endless array of stars, ones of a different kind than these motes of dust, and I wonder if—somewhere out there—there is another light, another switch, and another hand, one which might illuminate me, or already has.

That team is the University of Arizona Wildcats, a team that I feel has underperformed at times, but also looked dominant at others. In my opinion (and I feel this opinion is widely shared), Arizona is criminally underrated as a four seed; they have veteran leadership in guards Allonzo Trier and Rawle Alkins, one of the top head coaches in the country in Sean Miller, and arguably the number one overall pick (and player of the year candidate) in center Deandre Ayton. Arizona can perhaps chalk up their low seed to a disappointing start to the season, which saw the Wildcats lose three straight at the “Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament” and start of with a 3-3 record.
