Initial feu to John Paple [32ft 3in], surgeon in Gatehouse, as part of a plot of land with 100ft frontage onto Fleet Street. He planned to construct a new mill, but economic conditions changed, his business venture failed, and he 1794 sold the land in 1798 for construction of house nos. 23, 25, 27 & 29. Nos 23, 25 & 27 became the property of Samuel McMillan, merchant in Gatehouse. 1799 Samuel McMillan Disposition by Samuel McMillan to daughter Susan McMillan or McWhae, spouse of John McWhae, baker (east 1830 half of tenement) and Isabella McMillan (west half of tenement), eventually inherited by Peter Brown McWhae, Australia and Alexander Brown McWhae, Liverpool
