MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Living Root Bridges of Meghalaya

Wisdom and actions from the past are so relevant for Bethany Society, as we move into the future! The designers of the Living Root Bridges perceived a need and designed a solution, collaborating with nature and the community. The irony is that they believed in an idea which they perhaps did not see in their own lifetime, but opened up opportunities for the communitythat have worked over a period of hundreds of years. Nature teaches us patience. Many of the interventions of Bethany Society require time as they involve the development of human institutions and changing existing systems. We may not see the impact….but we need to continue to believe.

As we move unwaveringly towards our goal of “Leaving No One Behind” through our two major programmes CLEAN (Community Led Environment Action Network) and CLAN (Community Led Accessibility Network) the wisdom of the past continues to inspire us. The flowering of people and networks requires time, patience, resilience and belief.

“As we embark on this great collective journey, we pledge that no one will be left behind. Recognizing that the dignity of the human person is fundamental, we wish to see the goals and targets met for all nations and peoples and for all segments of society. And we will endeavour to reach the furthest behind first.” (Transforming our World : the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development ). This quote will continue to remind us that we need to “think globally and act locally.”

Thanks to our wonderful network of the community, the Government, INGOs, local NGOs, friends, and our wonderful staff who have supported and continue to support the dream of an inclusive society. We continue to seek your support and good will.

“You can accomplish anything in life, provided that you do not mind who gets the credit.”Harry S. Truman.

BETHANY SOCIETY ANNUAL REPORT : 2015-2016 1

From the Executive Director

In September 2015 the leaders of 192 nations from across the world came together at the United Nations to agree on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as they had done at the end of 1999 to agree on the Millennium Development Goals. The focus more than ever before is on the eradication of poverty and more importantly to do this in inclusive settings so that “No one is left behind.”

The SDGs were created to guide all countries to achieve sustainable development by 2030

“Sustainable development recognizes that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, combating inequality within and among countries, preserving the planet, creating sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and fostering social inclusion are linked to each other and are interdependent.” - 2030 Agenda, para 13

For Bethany Society this is a clarion call to be relevant and to measure its impact against internationally agreed upon indicators. It is a call to “Think Globally and Act Locally.” It is a call to go back to our roots and be true to our vision. It is also an encouragement and support that the Bethany Society thrust towards inclusion through mainstreaming strategies adopted to “Make The Right Real” , are on the right track and should be followed with even more rigor and vigour.

At all levels of the organization, sustainability concerns are demanding leadership that is humble, inspiring, bold, accountable, transparent and committed to the cause. Sustainability demands “a consistent and intelligent method….of rigorously assembling evidence to track progress”… This perhaps is the greatest challenge for Bethany Society over the next 15 years. We need to say “YES” to this responsibility.

The support of the Governing Body and resource organisations for taking such bold and innovative steps keeps us motivated. The enthusiasm of the personnel of various units under inspiring leadership, in embarking on programmes that go beyond the confines of Bethany Society and demand collaboration, networking and quality interventions, has made the responsibility of the Executive Director so much more enjoyable and smooth. Programmes such as the Regional Strategy for Inclusive Education in Northeast India (RAISE NE), CBR

BETHANY SOCIETY ANNUAL REPORT : 2015-2016 2

Programmes focusing on Inclusive Development, Inclusive Livelihoods that are Climate Change resilient, Community Mental Health, Community Led Environment Action Network ( CLEAN) for contributing to the SWACHH BHARAT MISSION, support to Disabled Peoples’ Organisations (DPOs) to be independent and inter-dependent ……are a witness to this.

Being open to the voices of our primary stakeholders, particularly persons with disability and children, has been our most challenging, humbling and rewarding experience.

All this, would not have been possible without the support of so many support organisations which include the Meghalaya State Government, The Central Government, International and National NGOs, corporates and more importantly individual donors from across India and the world, parents of students, staff…………. To each of you on behalf of Bethany Society “ THANK YOU AND MAY YOUR NUMBER INCREASE!”
