ANNUAL REPORT 2017-18 FROM OUR LEADERS

MESSAGE FROM THE 2017-18 BOARD CHAIR KELLY HANSEN

Typically, the Chairman’s message focuses on the Chamber’s accomplishments over the past year…and once again, there are many. But I would like to take this opportunity to look ahead at how we can work together to shape our region’s future.

Vision North Iowa Diligent implementation of the Vision North Iowa Strategic Plan is essential to the growth and success of our region. A top priority of the steering committee is alignment of resources and improved communication to avoid duplication of effort. The Chamber has volunteered to help lead the People, Place & Prosperity goal. You’ll be hearing more about this as we work to increase the educational attainment levels of our workforce; Kelly Hansen champion placemaking projects to create needed community amenities for workers and their families; and POET Biorefining-Hanlontown strengthen existing partnerships between employers, educational institutions, workforce development entities, Chairman of the Board 2017-18 and economic development organizations.

River City Renaissance Project As the operator of a business that depends upon the economic vitality of North Iowa and relies upon this region to recruit and retain qualified workers, I continue to support this project. Last November, when voters overwhelmingly chose pro-downtown project candidates and cast a favorable vote of 75% on the two project ballot measures, almost seems a distant memory. Certainly, everyone thought we’d be further along by now.

State and city officials and project partners remain committed to this project. The greater risk is to do nothing. If we stop investing in our community, we will continue to lose population and drive young workers away. The cost of government services is sure to continue rising over time, and if there are fewer of us to pay for them—then taxes will need to go up.

I’m enthusiastic about both Vision North Iowa and the downtown project. Let’s focus on our future and continue to work diligently on both of these efforts to retain qualified workers, improve our amenities, increase our tax base, and attract new members to our community.

MESSAGE FROM THE 2018-19 BOARD CHAIR RODNEY HUBER

As the CFO in a family-owned local business, I know the importance of growth. And it doesn’t happen automatically. Growth requires planning, innovation, and hard work. Current demographics in the North Iowa region are concerning. It’s time to pull together to GROW…our population, our future workforce, our average incomes, and our educational attainment levels.

In the upcoming year, the Chamber will be doing its part to implement a new and aggressive strategic plan for North Iowa known as Vision North Iowa. This prosperity agenda is grounded in the recognition that the Chamber has a distinctive role to play in the economic vitality of our region that will require innovation, partnerships, and programming. During these challenging times, we will work effectively and partner regionally to compete globally. Let’s get started!

Through your membership, the Chamber will continue to be your voice for business and community progress. I look forward to serving in the year ahead.

Rodney Huber Huber Supply Company MISSION Chairman of the Board 2018-19 The mission of the Chamber of Commerce is to promote progressive community and economic development to benefit Chamber members and the North Iowa region. SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR TURNING LEAF COUNSELING Cody Williams, LMHC

Turning Leaf Counseling is the recipient of the Chamber’s most prestigious award for 2018. The Small Business of the Year is selected annually from nominations submitted by Chamber members. The selection committee considers the business owner’s philosophy, achievements, volunteer service, and overall impact on the community in making the award. The honoree is also nominated for the Small Cody Williams, LMHC Business Administration state award and for national recognition from the US Chamber of Commerce. Turning Leaf Counseling

Business Philosophy Cody Williams believes that through creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere, the counseling staff can empower individuals to take responsibility for their lives and develop the understanding and strength necessary to make good decisions and cope with some of life’s hardest situations.

By recruiting the highest quality staff, Turning Leaf Counseling provides optimum mental health care while serving a growing number of clients.

Noteworthy Achievements In the past year, Turning Leaf Counseling has grown its practice by seven therapists and one nurse practitioner, resulting in a 200% increase in clients. The firm also employs multiple therapists with specific training in Parent/Child Interaction Therapy, a technique that teaches parenting skills and strengthens family relationships. Turning Leaf is the only organization in the area that provides this specialized service.

Turning Leaf has expanded its capacity to serve more than 500 clients per week, and has served over 2,500 individuals since the 2017 expansion. TLC believes in serving the whole community with patients ranging in age from two years old to senior citizens. Its counselors and support staff are passionate about creating significant positive change in the mental health of North Iowa’s youth and believe the adolescent years are a critical window in which mental health can be promoted and addressed. This strategy leads to healthy and strong adults and families.

In addition to operating a successful practice, Cody Williams and his staff have established on-site professional school counseling in nine North Iowa school districts; increasing access to services for students while decreasing the stress on families from transportation hassles and school/work absences. Recently the practice has partnered with Good Shepherd, for “aging in place” mental health services. To further assist the community, therapists participate as needed with teen suicide screenings and help empower children from the child crisis intervention center. Cody is also a member of the core team involved in the Cerro Gordo County Family Preservation Court, volunteering his time weekly to help keep families together

Turning Leaf Counseling is the 29th local business to be recognized with this annual award.

DISTINGUISHED CITIZENS SCOTT & SUSAN MOORMAN

“Moorman’s” is a household name in North Iowa. Since Scott and Susan Moorman made Mason City their home in the early 1980s, they’ve befriended hundreds of people and help to dress thousands more. As previous winners of the Chamber’s Small Business Award, Scott and Susan have grown their business from a men’s clothing store to a men’s and women’s clothing store with locations in both Mason City and Ames.

Their downtown location on the Federal Avenue Plaza is highly visible. However, Scott and Susan were selected for the Distinguished Citizen Award to honor them for all the things they do behind the scenes to help make North Iowa a better place.

Scott and Susan frequently work as a team, so when they lend a hand to an organization or a project, those efforts receive a double benefit. Both are active members of the Sunrise Rotary Club and the Scott & Susan Moorman First United Methodist Church. They continue to be active supporters of Mason City Youth Hockey—an organization that each of their three sons (Justin, Parker, and Conner) participated in from Mites to Mohawks—and they are huge supporters of the River City Renaissance project.

In the community, Scott and Susan helped to bring the Sculptures on Parade project to fruition and are involved in nearly every effort to support the Downtown—from sponsoring the Bike Share program, to RAGBRAI, to Main Street Mason City events, to beautifying the Plaza. As a member of Community Benefit-Mason City, Scott is working to restore the Historic Egloff House…which means he can be found weed- whacking and mowing in the summer months and shoveling snow in winter.

Certainly, Mason City is a better (and more beautiful) place thanks to the efforts of Scott and Susan Moorman.

Positive total worker health makes a large impact on the businesses and organizations in our community. In partnership with the Cerro Gordo Department of Public Health and Healthy – Mason City, the Chamber is pleased to recognize Sukup Manufacturing Co. with the Workplace Wellness Award.

As the world’s fastest growing bin company and largest family-owned, full-line grain drying and storage equipment manufacturer, it is no surprise Sukup has taken total worker health to the next level as well. Programs for employees range from disease prevention screenings and nutrition, to stress management and commuter safety.

Sukup Manufacturing recently opened “Sukup Health Solutions”, an on-site health clinic for employees. The space includes two offices, four exam rooms, and one lab - which is staffed by a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner from Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa. Employees are able to schedule an appointment for a variety of services such as biometric screenings, health coaching, immunizations, and smoking cessation.

Sukup sets a great example of the valuable well-being practices employers can provide to workers in the community. Congratulations to the entire Sukup Manufacturing team for going above and beyond to support employee well-being!

MASON CITY SAYS YES! In 2017, the Chamber’s Leadership North Iowa (LNI) class led the community in the Mason City Says YES! campaign, an effort to bring a new hotel, conference center, performing arts pavilion, and multi- purpose arena to the region. LNI participants saw the need for new amenities to attract and retain a growing workforce, and created an educational campaign to support the River City Renaissance Project.

LNI’s goal was to keep the public informed and educate voters for the November election and quickly teamed up to help form the Mason City Says YES! committee. Together, they made numerous presentations in the community, created promotional videos, compiled FAQ documents, organized public forums, spoke at city council meetings, raised funds, planned advertising, and more, as part of the campaign.

This collaborative effort resulted in a 75% YES vote for both ballot items! With the citizens’ support to move forward with a Multi-Purpose Arena, Performing Arts Pavilion, Hotel, Skywalk, renovation to The Music Man Square for conference space, and construction of a new museum, the Chamber will be diligent to see the complex project through to completion.

COMMUNITY CONCIERGE PROGRAM The mission of the Community Concierge program is to help employees and their families relocate to Mason City and forge lasting connections within the community. This program has multiple facets, but the primary initiative is a referral service for Chamber member businesses. When an employer is in the final stages of recruiting, or has recently hired, a new executive/doctor/plant manager/etc., they refer that employee to the Community Concierge. Assistance may include a personalized, guided tour of Mason City and nearby Clear Lake; employment for a trailing spouse; help locating quality rental housing; connections with the principal or teachers at a child’s future school; introductions to service clubs, churches, and volunteer opportunities; and much more, depending on the individual’s needs.

In 2017-2018, the Chamber added an additional focus on assisting with physician recruitment. Much like the rest of the country, our hospital and clinics are facing a critical physician shortage. The Chamber is taking a unique, community-minded approach to closing the gap and ensuring North Iowa remains a medical hub for the region. Our Community Concierge is working in partnership with recruiters from Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa and the Cerro Gordo County Medical Alliance to ensure we attract and retain the best and brightest providers, so patients can feel confident in the care they receive.

In the long run, this service will not only attract new residents to North Iowa… it will keep them here. The Chamber of Commerce is excited to see the Community Concierge service continue to grow in the coming years. Thank you to the sponsors: Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa, Cargill Protein, POET Biorefining – Hanlontown, and Holiday Inn Express – Mason City.

MACE AWARD RECOGNITION The Chamber was named the recipient of the Public Policy of the Year by the Mid-America Chamber Executives (MACE) for the second year running. MACE represents chamber executives in the six-state region of Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The Public Policy of the Year award recognizes chambers that achieve a significant victory in public policy. The Chamber’s Leadership North Iowa (LNI) class received the award for their work with the Mason City Says YES! project.

Class members presented a positive campaign: YES to community pride, YES to positive growth, YES to attracting new residents and industry. The Chamber continues to promote progress on this project as well as other opportunties for community improvement.

The Chamber was also a finalist in the Publication of the Year category for its “New to North Iowa” Relocation guide and video brochure. The relocation guide was created by Membership Director/ Community Concierge Colleen Frein and Marketing & Leadership Development Director Allyson Krull to use for recruitment efforts and welcoming new members of the community. VISION NORTH IOWA Working Together to Improve the Lives of All North Iowans. With support from 12 partner organizations and more than 1000 regional stakeholders, the Vision North Iowa strategic planning process has launched a 5-year action plan for regional prosperity.

The process began in January 2017 and concluded in just over a year. As leaders looked at disturbing trends, they examined the approaches taken by successful communities in the Midwest. In example after example, successful communities take a proactive approach to their future. They are diligent about planning—and most importantly, following their plan as opposed to reacting. North Iowa has been without a formal plan since the Mason City 2010 Plan was written back in 2000.

In April, the plan partners rolled out the Vision North Iowa plan, which focuses on the most promising opportunities. North Iowa is full of rich assets and distinct advantages—which largely outweigh the regions challenges and risks.

Action strategies will focus on four goals: 1. Building a Regional Community 2. People, Place, and Prosperity 3. Innovation & Entrepreneurship 4. Business Development & Marketing

This strategic plan will guide North Iowa’s community and economic development efforts over the next five years. The North Iowa Corridor EDC will lead the project, but it will rely heavily upon collaboration from the chambers, cities, county, NIACC, and non-profit organizations in Cerro Gordo County to successful implement the action strategies.

BUILDING OUR BRAND MURAL PROJECT With the Chamber’s leadership, Mason City is making strides “Building Our Brand” as a destination for Prairie School architecture, while also improving the appearance of the back side of downtown buildings with beautiful murals in the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie School. Thanks to a grant from the Iowa Arts Council, two murals have been installed to jumpstart the project, and a third is underway.

In 2017, the University of Iowa offered the services of MFA student Ali Hval to design and paint the first mural on the east side of the downtown Brick Furniture building. She also designed a geometric pattern for the City Center building. Artist Keely Hertzel, a Mason City native, completed the mural on the fire escape stairwell and began work on a mural on the north side of Central Park Dentistry. Other buildings are in the queue for next Spring.

Citizens may be largely immune to the current view, but the approach to downtown from every direction welcomes visitors with an unattractive landscape of building backs and unkempt alleys. Hopefully, additional building owners will choose to participate in this program to reinforce Mason City’s brand as a destination for Prairie School architecture and improve the appearance of the back side of downtown buildings. Special thanks to Chamber members Randall Construction and NMC Materials Handling for assisting with lifts for this project!

MOONLIGHT BIKE RIDE After a several year hiatus, the Moonlight Bike Ride made its return to Mason City! Coorindated by the Chamber’s Worksite Wellness Committe and made possible by many business sponsors, nearly 200 riders enjoyed the beautiful summer weather with a 10-mile bike ride under a full moon. POET Biorefining - Hanlontown employees awarded the committee a grant for this event.

Traditions like the Moonlight Bike Ride help to establish a culture of well-being. The Worksite Wellness Committee members know it takes hard work, dedication, passion, and persistence to create an environment where the healthy choice is the easy choice. Worksites that focus on the health and well- being of their employees improve their lives both at work and at home. This is just one of the many initiatives created to assist North Iowans to live better.

This event was event endorsed by Iowa’s Healthiest State Initiative (HSI). The Moonlight Bike Ride aligned with the goals of HSI for Iowa to become the healthiest state in the nation. WORKFORCE ATTRACTION

The Voluntary Workforce Attraction Contribution was a new addition in 2017-2018, and was met with overwhelming support from Chamber members. The Chamber is working to grow two programs of work – the Community Concierge and Worksite Wellness initiatives – both of which have been identified as critical for growing and maintaining a quality workforce in North Iowa. The Chamber Board of Directors believes these programs will give members a competitive edge over neighboring regions. Thanks to the voluntary dues contributed this year, the Community Concierge was able to grow its services for new or prospective residents, and the Worksite Wellness committee was able to offer new programs and plan a highly successful summer event. Thank you!

The Mason City Chamber of Commerce Foundation was formed in 2000 to assist the Chamber of Commerce with its work in community and economic development. As a not-for-profit charitable organization classified as 501c3 by the Internal Revenue Service, the Foundation is eligible to apply for grant funding to assist in the Chamber’s mission.

To date, the Foundation has several notable accomplishments: • Serving as the Applicant and Guarantor for Mason City’s Vision Iowa project, which led to the restoration and rehabilitation of the Historic Park Inn, the construction of the McCoy Architectural Interpretive Center, the renovation of the Mason City Public Library, and the construction of the Downtown Streetscape. On October 8, 2018 the Foundation will have fulfilled its obligations under the Vision Iowa grant with the State to ensure these projects are operating as agreed according to the highest industry standards. • Applied for grants that supported the River City Sculptures on Parade program, including the commission of the American Architect sculpture in Central Park. • Applied for grants to support the Building Our Brand mural project. • Applied for grants to support the renovation and adaptive reuse of the Historic Egloff House.

SCULPTURES ON PARADE

The Chamber continues to serve as the “home base” for the sculpture walk program. River City Sculptures on Parade, Inc. is a non-profit charitable organization that originated in 2012 with a mission to bring a significant display of public art to Downtown Mason City.

Sculptures are displayed along a 1.7 mile route designed to lead participants on a looping path of Mason City’s Cultural Crescent and back to the Downtown central core. Sculptures are owned by the artists and loaned to the exhibit for one year. Each of the rotating sculptures is available for sale or lease. The current exhibit features 53 sculptures including 24 that have been purchased for permanent display on the sculpture walk.

COMMUNITY BENEFIT - MASON CITY

The Community Benefit-Mason City fund began in 2010 as a joint effort of Iowa Business Growth, Wright on the Park, and the Chamber with a commitment to build a multi-dimensional community through investment in diversified local projects. Currently, CBMC volunteers are working to restore and renovate the Historic Egloff House on East State Street for use as temporary, furnished housing for young professionals who come to the region as part of their professional training such as medical students, college interns, and student teachers.

“Communities are only as strong as the leadership from within; oftentimes we see that through our Chamber of Commerce. The Mason City Chamber of Commerce continues to provide opportunities not only through serving the Chamber, but also the development of new leadership—helping people understand and effectively communicate their vision, channel their passion, and demonstrate their integrity.” Marti Rodamaker, First Citizens Bank
