SOLOMON SCHECHTER DAY SCHOOL OF ESSEX K UNION DECEMBER 8,2006 Commenta State taking an unbearable The following guest commentary was written by Alan Caruba, whose weekly column, "Warning Signs," is posted on the Web site of The National Anxiety Center, ivivw.anxietycen- ter.com. Regular editorial material will resume in this space next week.

For years we have been assailed with the propaganda about the way urban and suburban "sprawl" is driving out wildlife in various parts of the nation. One would think that in New Jersey, the state with the highest population density, wildlife other than squirrels would be scarce. It's not. New Jersey is literally overrun with wildlife. It is home to huge herds of deer, flocks of Canada geese, innumerable raccoons and possums, and bears. Yes, bears. Big, black bears, most notably in the northwestern counties that bor- der Pennsylvania and New York, but also in bedroom coun- ties near Newark or the locus of all bad government, Trenton. Gov. Jon Corzine loves bears so much he has intervened to halt only the third scheduled bear hunt in the decades during which the bear population exploded. Experts esti- mate there are as many as three bears per square mile in parts of northwestern New Jersey, when the recommended level is one bear per 2.5 square miles. There was a hunt in 2003 and another in 2005. There will be no bear hunt in December 2006. As the state's largest daily newspaper opined in October, "After reams of scientific reports, policy debates and even a Supreme Court case, New Jersey created a comprehensive 'I counted who is naughty or nice with a new electronic tabulation system. policy to deal with the state's growing bear population. December 8, 2006 KKOKI) I'HISS WWW SP-F girls basketball working to keep winning Raiders seeking sixth straight 20-win season

SPORTS EDITOR Not too many high school basketball programs in the county come into the 2006-'07 season boasting the resume of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School girls basketball team: five straight 20-win seasons, five straight trips to the sectional finals, and only two players lost from last season's 21-8 team. But past accomplishments and preseason expectations mean little to the Raiders, who are certainly aware that none of the previous matters when the ball is tipped in the first game of the season. SP-F wasn't on anyone's radar at the beginning of last season, having lost three of its top players (Jenny Burke, Maura Gillooly and All-State center Hillary Klimowicz) to graduation and having a brand new head coach (Bruce Davis) take over the program. However, the Raiders turned what was supposed to be a rebuilding year into yet another impressive one during '05. "We exceeded almost everyone's preseason expecta- tions last year and had a great season," Davis said. The Raiders won 21 games, had a third-place finish in the Union County Tournament, and had a fifth straight berth in the sectional final against top- ranked Malcolm X. Shabazz High School. After the season, head coach Davis was named Coach of the Year in Union County by both The Star- Ledger and The Courier News. In addition, guard Allie Zazzali made both The Star- Ledger and the Coaches All-County team. 'I think we'll be a force in the coun- "Last year felt really good," Zazzali said. "A lot of people doubted us since we ties and we'll make some noise again in lost so many of our key contributors from the team, like Jenny and Hillary and states. Whether we continue the trend Maura, and I think everyone thought that it was going to be more of a of 20-win seasons will depend on hard rebuilding year. But we didn't come out and play like it was a rebuilding work and some good fortune.' year." - Bruce Davis Zazzali, one of the co-captains for the '06 team, averaged 13.4 points and head coach 2.9 assists per game last season for the Raiders and looks to be a leader this year along with fellow senior co-captain Lauren Mains. "I think that last year set a precedent for this coming season," Mains said. "And I think it shows that we have capabilities and it gives us confidence and it gives us goals for the future." Zazzali and Mains are certainly familiar with winning, as they both already helped the SP-F girls soccer team make school history in the fall season by capturing the sectional title for the first time last month. The transition to basketball is never really easy for the girls, who are two of many on the girls basketball team who also play soccer for SP-F. "It's pretty tough, sometimes I forget that I am actually in basketball," Mains said of the transition between seasons. "But a lot of the basketball girls play soccer so we are all very close and everyone is a tight team so I think it helps." Zazzali said, '"There are so many practices and I have a lot of school work so it's pretty hard, but I have grown accustomed to it." The Raiders girls basketball team has certainly grown accustomed to winning over the past five sea- sons, as they have won 20 or more games in each of the past five years. But they are well aware that they will need to work very hard if they want to continue their streak and attain their preseason team goals of winning the county title, sectional title, and advancing in the state tournament. "We can get to our goals if we work hard," Zazzali said. "We are one of those teams that we have to work hard every single day and we have to be able to play in every game for us to stay in it." Davis said, "I think we'll be a force in the counties and we'll make some noise again in states. Whether we continue the trend of 20-win seasons will depend on hard work and some good fortune." The Raiders will rely not only on the veteran leadership of Zazzali and Mains this season, but also the skills of some very talented underclassmen. Sophomores Jackie Law (9.2 points, nine rebounds last season) and ALAN MAGLAQUE/MAGLAQUE.COM Kaylin Jaichon (6.5 points) are expected to contribute on the inside and outside this year. Above: SP-F seniors Allie Zazzali (left) and Lauren Mains (right) hope to lead "Jackie Law will be a force this year," Davis said. "She's improved her game away from the basket and the Raiders to their sixth straight 20-win season. Top right: The Raiders that will make her much harder to defend. She's already one of the top reboundors in the county and I practice layups during a pre-practice drill on Nov. 26. SP-F opens its season at home against Shabazz at 4 p.m. on Dec. 15.
