  • First Century Fox Inc and Sky Plc; European Intervention Notice
Rt Hon Karen Bradley Secretary of State for Digital Culture Media and Sport July 14 2017 Dear Secretary of State Twenty-First Century Fox Inc and Sky plc; European Intervention Notice The Campaign for Press and Broadcasting is responding to your request for new submissions on the test of commitment to broadcasting standards. We are pleased to submit this short supplement to the submission we provided for Ofcom in March. As requested, the information is up-to-date, but we are adding an appeal to you to reconsider Ofcom’s recommendation to accept the 21CF bid on this ground, which we find wholly unconvincing in the light of the evidence we submitted. SKY NEWS IN AUSTRALIA In a pre-echo of the current buyout bid in the UK, Sky News Australia, previously jointly- owned with other media owners, became wholly owned by the Murdochs on December 1 last year. When the CPBF made its submission on the Commitment to Broadcasting Standards EIN to Ofcom in March there were three months of operation by which to judge the direction of the channel, but now there are three months more. A number of commentaries have been published. The Murdoch entity that controls Sky Australia is News Corporation rather than 21FC but the service is clearly following the Fox formula about which the CPBF commented to Ofcom. Indeed it is taking the model of broadcasting high-octane right-wing political commentary in peak viewing times even further. While Fox News has three continuous hours of talk shows on weekday evenings, Sky News Australia has five.

  • 2020 July Newsletter
Newsletter July 2020 Lake Macquarie U3A Inc, PO Box 782, TORONTO NSW 2283 Email: [email protected] Website: lakemacquarie.u3anet.org.au Patron: Greg Piper MP From the President . Hi everyone My Irish forbears would spin in their graves if they knew how much I have recently sympathised with Scott and Gladys’s COVID dilemmas. Your LMU3A committee have looked at our issues every which way to see what we can do to get moving again. While we know most of you accept the uncertainty currently plaguing (couldn’t resist the pun) the globe, your committee is also aware of those pining for the social, physical and intellectual stimuli of U3A. Although the criterion for group gathering is changing for the better, we need notice to get the machinery moving and take into account all the issues. We can’t endanger our members or burden course leaders and clerks with unmanageable risks. We also need to observe our legal obligations. For these reasons Term 3, due to commence on 27 July, WILL NOT GO AHEAD. Term 4 due to start on 12 October SHOULD go ahead, though it’s likely this will be in a reduced capacity. Assessments are currently underway to identify courses which could work in open-air venues or which could be held indoors and still meet the social distancing requirements which we have to assume will continue. WE WILL CONTACT YOU in September to let you know Term 4 status. Make sure your email address is current or, if you don’t have email, your phone number.

Before the FEDERAL COMMUNICAnONS COMMISSION Washington, D.C. 20554 In the Matter of ) ) Children's Television Obligations ) MM Docket No. 00-167 of Digital Television Broadcasters ) ) REPLY COMMENTS OF THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY AND ABC. INC. The Walt Disney Company and its indirect wholly owned subsidiary ABC, Inc. submit these reply comments in response to the comments of the Children's Media Policy Coalition ("CMPC") in the above-referenced proceeding. ABC, Inc., directly and through subsidiary companies, owns and operates the ABC Television Network as well as ten broadcast television stations across the country. The ABC Television Network currently provides its owned and affiliated stations with a four-hour weekly Saturday moming block of children's programs called ABC Kids, three hours of which it designates "core" educational and informational ("Ell") programming. In its comments CMPC requests dramatic changes in the definition of Ell programming and in rules regarding acceptable scheduling and promotion ofsuch programs. It asks that the Commission's longstanding rules, which wisely define E/I programming as programming that addresses either the social/emotional or the cognitive/intellectual needs ofchildren, be changed to require that every broadcaster provide some programming that teaches academic skills such as reading, writing or arithmetic. It also asks that the rule permitting educational and informational "core" programming to air any day of the week between 7 AM and 10 PM be revised to require that every broadcaster schedule some of its core programming for weekdays rather than weekends. This departure from longstanding Commission rules is unwarranted. The existing rules appropriately recognize the value of pro-social as well as academic programming and weekend as well as weekday programming.
