Box 851, Valley forge, PA 19482-0851. Around 1481, a local chronicler from Seville narrated a most incredible story centering around one of the city’s most prominent citizens, Diego de Susán. He was among Seville’s wealthiest and most influential citizens, a councilor in city government, and, perhaps most important, he was father to Susanna—the fermosa fembra (“beautiful maiden”). He was also a converso, and was connected with a group of city merchants and leaders, most of whom were conversos as well. All were opponents to Isabella’s government. According to this narration, Susán was at the heart of a plot to overthrow the work of the newly created Inquisition. He summoned a meeting of Seville’s power brokers and other rich and powerful men from the towns of Utrera and Carmona. These said to one another, ‘What do you think of them acting thus against us? Are we not the most propertied members of this city, and well loved by the people? Let us collect men together…’ And thus between them they allotted the raising of arms, men, money and other necessities. ‘And if they come to take us, we, together with armed men and the people will rise up and slay them and so be revenged on our enemies.’[1] The fly in the ointment of their plans was the fermosa fembra herself. -

- 9 - SUR LES CHEMINS DE L ’EXIL : LETTRES DE MANUEL MA TAMOROS A LA POETESS E ET ROMANCIERE FRANÇAISE ÉLISABE TH SOPHIE GALLOT (1863 - 1865) Juan B. VILAR Professeur à l’Université de Murcie (traduction Robert Darrigrand) à Madame Suzanne Tucoo - Chala Aux Archives départementales des Pyrénées Atlantiques (Pau), dans la section Archives protestantes : 60 J 159/32, n°1, sont conservées treize lettres de Manuel Matamoros, né à Lepe (Huelva) le 8 avril 1834, principal inspirateur de la renaissance du mouvement évangélique espagnol au XIXème siècle 1 , à la famille Gallot, originaire de La Rochelle 2 mais installée à Pau, alors ville balnéaire 3 , et très représentative de la grande bourgeoisie protestante française de l'époque. Huit de ces lettres sont adressées à la poétesse et romancière Élisabeth Sophie Gallot, cinq à sa mère Mme Gallot, veuve à l'époque, et les treize, par extension, au troisième membre du groupe familial Marie Gallot, sœur et fille des précédentes, décédée en pleine jeunesse. Si l'on excepte une note qui ne porte pas de date, cette correspondance est datée entre le 10 octobre 1863 et le 10 juillet 1865. Elle coïncide donc exactement avec l'exil du leader réformiste espagnol en France dans les années 1863 - 1865 qui suivit son bref séjour au Royaume Uni en 1863, à la suite de sa déportation depuis Grenade, via Gibraltar. Ce long séjour en France précéda à s on tour son départ pour la Suisse où il resta quelques mois jusqu'à sa mort à Lausanne, victime de la phtisie le 31 juillet 1866. -

After meeting with considerable opposition and persecution from the Established Church and others, the Methodist Conference decided to support the work by providing missionary ministers. The early work of building a chapel, fighting for their rights and gaining a degree of official sanction and protection is part of the story. -

HAVE before me as I write a document of historic impor I tance and of particular interest at this present moment when the eyes of most of the world are turned towards the unhappy country of Spain, where is being waged a civil war that will have some considerable influence upon the question of liberty of con science in the peninsula. If freedom should come at last to Spain, and its people be allowed to worship as they will, the result will be a bringing to fruition of the work and labours, sometimes done faithfully even unto death, of a long line of Spanish witnesses for the Truth. Among those who suffered for conscience sake in the nineteenth century stands out the name of Matamoros. The document before me is an original form of the petition to the Queen of Spain, ex pressing the hopes and prayers of thirty thousand French women in favour of Matamoros and his companions in captivity. It is dated I863 and is worded as follows : "Votre Majeste sera peut-etre surprise de la demarche que nous osons faire aujourd'hui, et nous devons tout premierement la supplier tres humble ment de pardonner ce qui pourrait lui paraitre une singuliere temerite. "Mais ce sont des femmes qui s'adressent au creur de la Reine pour la conjurer d'ecouter ce qu'elles viennent lui dire en faveur de quelques-uns de ses sujets qui sou:ffrent et qui prient dans les cachots destines aux plus grands criminels. -
