At the Okanagan Hockey our primary focus is to promote the long-term development of each of our athletes in the classroom, on the ice, and in the community. Putting young, motivated people in a structured environment, surrounded by a world class staff and support system, allows us to deliver a consistent message and value system that we feel is imperative to the long term development of our students.

We believe that elite athletes need to be challenged, yet supported, in all aspects of their lives. We hold our student athletes accountable on their efforts, attention to details, and above all their attitudes. We have learned through experience that those three key ingredients are keys to future success.

Okanagan Hockey Ontario is in partnership with Henry Street High School who has a proud tradition of academic excellence, and of providing many and varied opportunities for students to get involved in school life.

Henry Street High School has implemented a schedule that allows our student-athletes to attend school from 9:00am to 12:25pm without missing core classes for practice or training.

A weekly, mandatory study hall provides our student-athletes with an opportunity to have one on one instruction with our Guidance Counsellors and help manage their workload.

Our Guidance Counsellor works diligently at helping our students navigate through SATs, ACTs, and NCAA Clearinghouse ensuring that all options are available for our students when they are ready to attend a Post Secondary Institution.

Guidance and knowledge is a major part of the success our students have at Henry Street High School, and the success they continue to have in all of their endeavours after they graduate. HENRY STREET HIGH SCHOOL

Henry Street High School (HSHS) has a proud tradition of academic excellence, and of providing many and varied opportunities for students to get involved in school life. HSHS has a strong athletics program, including team sports and intramural activities, numerous clubs and committees, a creative drama program, which produces fabulous student performances, and an outstanding music program. HOCKEY PROGRAM

Okanagan Hockey Ontario is a comprehensive 10 month program that includes education, hockey off-ice strength and conditioning, mental training, personal and team development.

Okanagan Hockey Ontario staff is a team of professionals that are dedicated to the personal development of each student-athlete.

Through knowledge, research and experience, we have identified the keys areas of focus for each age group in developing strong, intelligent and committed hockey players.

OHO TEAM MIDGET (2001 - 2003) ATHLETIC PROGRAM: ON-ICE

Our athletes take part in daily purposeful on-ice training. Practices are designed with individual skill development in mind through tactical and technical teaching. Our philosophy is to provide our athletes with the tools needed to execute and perform at the highest level possible. Teaching is a big part of our daily activities, from techniques to hockey IQ which gives our athletes not only a physical advantage but also allows them to understand the game and how to be successful within it.

Our coaches are experts by experience having played the game at Pro and NHL levels. Their knowledge of what it takes and their understanding of the player’s perspective make Okanagan Hockey Ontario a unique program.

Okanagan Hockey Ontario is partnered with Elite Training Systems (ETS) with a mission is to build the complete athlete through training, nutrition & recovery. Through their experience with athletes, team ETS prides themselves with being able to help student - athletes move & feel better, becoming the strongest & fittest version of themselves.

The ETS Team will provide our student athletes with the tools they need to perform at the highest level. The ETS Philosophy is a dedication to helping the athlete, maximize their potential by:

The standard testing protocol is performed by the Okanagan Hockey staff to ensure high data validity. We implement this standardized testing at the following times per year: ​

All timed tests are conducted using the Sport Testing System timing gates. All other tests’ data are entered manually into the Sport testing system. Test data is stored in an Okanagan Hockey specific database.

Recognized as an International Centre of Excellence for its fully accessible design and inclusive environment, world-class partnerships and signature programming, the multi-award winning facility includes three full regulation-size courts, a six-lane, 200m indoor running track, two resistance training areas, two aerobics class rooms, a cardiovascular exercise area and more.

CHARACTER BUILDING AND LIFE TRAINING The development process for a young hockey player is a long one. At the Okanagan Hockey Ontario, we feel that exposing our players to all areas of the teaching process with a positive and consistent approach, we will help lead them on their journey to reaching, and surpassing, their individual potential.

Nutrition protocols are designed by a Certified Sports Nutritionist. In addition to the Nutrition Seminar, players are required to attend presentations on the dangers of smokeless tobacco, health and well being, drug awareness, and social media training.

Andy Oakes has been actively involved in the development of hockey players since he began his career with Okanagan Hockey Group (OHG) in 1997. He has held a variety of positions including Instructor, co-founder and Coordinator of the International Development Tournament, Vice President and President (2007). In his 20+ years with OHG, Andy has helped grow the camp operations in , Austria and in the United Kingdom. In 2002 Andy founded Okanagan Hockey Academy Penticton, which was established as the first hockey specific sport school recognized by BC Hockey and Hockey Canada. As the need increased for education based hockey, Andy expanded the Academy operations to Europe (2008), United Kingdom (2012), Edmonton (2015) and Whitby, Ontario in 2018.

Andy partnered with the with the Prospect Combines which are designed to assist high level minor hockey players with their skill development and ability assessment by participating in comprehensive on and office ice testing.

In 2009, along with four other like-minded sport schools he was a founding member of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL), for which he sits on the Board as the Chairman.

DIXON WARD VICE PRESIDENT AND DIRECTOR - OKANAGAN HOCKEY GROUP

Dixon joined Okanagan Hockey Group after a distinguished hockey career. As an amateur, he played four seasons of college hockey at the University of North Dakota where he was the only player in the school’s history to score 100 goals and 100 assists. Dixon finished his collegiate career as the fourth all-time leading scorer at UND. After graduation in 1992, Dixon played 12 years of professional hockey, including 599 NHL games. He was an integral player on the 1999 finalist team.

In the AHL, Dixon led the to the 1996 Championship and was awarded the Jack Butterfield Trophy as playoff MVP. Dixon completed his pro career by playing two seasons in Switzerland’s Elite League. During this time, he captained Team Canada to the 2003 Spengler Cup Championship in Davos. CHRYSTAL BRYAN PRINCIPAL - HENRY STREET HIGH SCHOOL

Having worked in the Durham District School Board for the past 17 years, Chrystal is a veteran educator who continues to follow her passions of education, athletics and equity. She sits on the LOSSA (Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics) Executive as one of the Principals’ Reps, as well as the OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) Regional Principals’ Rep. She has coached every year that she has been in education with her expertise lying in the area of track and field and basketball.

Chrystal believes strongly in fostering a school that is entrenched in equitable practices that support all students in reaching their full potential and this means that she holds her staff in high esteem of meeting this goal. She is very proud of the Henry Street HS community because they have created a culture and that promotes academic excellence and inclusion, where everyone truly feels part of the school.

NICHOLE SORICHETTI STUDENT COUNSELOR - HENRY STREET HIGH SCHOOL

I have taught at Henry Street High School for 12 years. During this time I started a field hockey team and I help coach a number of other teams within the school, including girls’ hockey. I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. While at UMASS I played Division 1 Field Hockey and stayed on as a Grad Assistant Coach for 1 year before returning home to Canada. I have two young children who enjoy playing hockey, baseball and soccer and I often help coach their teams. I love working with students to help them achieve their academic and athletic goals. Some of the services provided include: · Pathway planning · Course Selections · Working with teachers and student athletes to help students perform their best academically · Help students meet NCAA Eligibility requirements · Personal Counselling STAFF STUART MCREYNOLD ABILITIES CENTRE - DIRECTOR

A certified teacher with experience in disability programming, Stuart has an extensive background within education, recreation and sport. Originally from Hitchin, Hertfordshire, UK, Stuart has held positions in the UK, Spain, New Zealand and Canada. Stuart holds a BA (Hons) in Leisure & Sports Management from the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff, United Kingdom, and a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching from the Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. He is a former professional rugby player, including representing Wales, England & Great Britain as a student-athlete, and is the current Head Coach for the Ontario Senior Women’s Provincial rugby team. Stuart currently holds the position of Director, Sport, Recreation and Partnerships at Abilities Centre Durham, and National Director, Academy for Student Athlete Development (ASAD). Stuart supports a number of advisory groups including the executive committee of the International Physical Literacy Association as the representative for inclusion.

KELLY KASPER ABILITIES CENTRE - SENIOR MANAGER

Kelly Kasper is the Senior Manager, Sport, Recreation and Community Outreach at the Abilities Centre. In her role, Kelly oversees the portfolios of the Centre for Sport Innovation and Inclusion, Inclusive Physical Literacy along with the Academy for Student Athlete Development (ASAD) program. Kelly is a graduate of where she played varsity basketball with the Lady Vees while obtaining her Bachelor of Physical Education and Health. Kelly’s professional background includes several years working with the Ontario Basketball Association in Coach Development, and Clubs and Competitions, then as Athletic Director at Bill Crothers Secondary School before beginning her position at the Abilities Centre. Kelly helps run a local basketball organization and has coached women’s basketball at both the University and College level in Ontario as well as boy’s prep basketball. Kelly will be the main of contact from ASAD for student athletes and their families to inquire about, and register for the program. MARK FITZGERALD ELITE TRAINING SYSTEMS FOUNDER - HEAD STRENGTH COACH

Mark Fitzgerald has been in the field of human performance for over 15 years. He is the owner of Elite Training Systems, a brand of high performance training facilities, which are in high demand for athletes of all levels and abilities, located in Ontario, Canada. For the past 5 years he has been head of off-ice development for the Whitby Minor Hockey Association, where he oversees off-ice development for all ages. Mark is a Lead Training Advisor/Member of International Training Team at Under Armour, for who he began the development of a nationwide combine development program. Mark is also currently entering his fourth year as Head of Performance for the Hockey Club (NHL).

JEFF WATSON ELITE TRAINING SYSTEMS - STRENGTH & CONDITIONING COACH

Jeff Watson is a Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach at Elite Training Systems in Whitby, ON. Jeff currently holds the title of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Rugby Ontario as well as for the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks and Lords. Jeff is fortunate to be able to work with both high level, elite athletes (hockey, , baseball, football, rugby) as well as coach everyday athletes, kids and adults through their personal goals. Jeff holds an Honours Degree in Kinesiology from McMaster University and a CSCS from the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Sport has encompassed Jeff’s entire life growing up in Peterborough, ON as a competitive hockey and lacrosse player before taking on rugby and football in high school. He continues to play competitive men’s rugby for the Ajax Wanderers of the Ontario Marshall Championship League. Jeff’s greatest gift has always been his ability and willingness to help others. With 10 years combined experience in the training industry, Jeff combines his experience with his own sport resume to continuous applied learning in order to provide an edge in his understanding of true athlete development in all aspects of their sporting life. Whether it is a physical or mental edge, Jeff is constantly thriving to perfect the athlete through training both on and off the playing field. STAFF

MICHAEL DUCO HEAD COACH

Duco joins Okanagan Hockey Ontario from the of the (OHL) where he spent the 2017-18 season as an assistant coach and will remain with the organization in a player development position. On top of his duties with the Petes, he also was involved with the Peterborough Minor Hockey Association as a skills development coach and player evaluator. Duco has experience coaching at the professional and major junior levels as well as numerous years working in skill development, on top of his nearly 10-year professional playing career. Prior to joining the Petes, Duco was the director of hockey operations and head coach of the East Coast Hockey League’s (ECHL) .

Duco promises to do everything in his power to ensure our student-athletes become elite hockey players and more importantly well-rounded individuals. The , Ont. product enjoyed an extensive nine-year professional playing career that saw him play 18 games in the (NHL) with the and , 267 games in the (AHL), as well as time spent in the ECHL and Europe. Duco played parts of five seasons in the OHL with the , where he was part of the 2008 J. Ross Robertson Cup winning team as OHL champions. DEFENSEMAN/SKILLS AND DEVELOPMENT COACH

Ranger joins Okanagan Hockey Ontario after spending two seasons as an assistant coach with the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). Prior to joining the UOIT coaching staff, Ranger spent eight seasons playing professionally, which included 323 games at the National Hockey League (NHL) level with the and . The Whitby, Ont. product played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Generals and was selected in the sixth round, 183rd overall, by the Lightning at the 2002 NHL Draft. Ranger is excited to join Okanagan Hockey. He believes Okanagan Hockey will provide some of the best training available for student athletes and plans on bringing an elite level of development for Okanagan’s student-athletes.

JAMIE JOHNSON ASSISTANT COACH

Johnson enjoyed a 14-year professional playing career that saw him play 431 games at the American Hockey League (AHL) level, 181 games in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), as well as four seasons in Europe. Prior to playing professionally, the Port Franks, Ont. product played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the and , accumulating 249 points (55-194-249) in 262 career regular season games.

Specializing in skill development as an on ice instructor has provided Johnson with valuable strategies in effective communication. He possesses a highly professional approach to coaching and instruction which will be valuable to our U18 AAA team as well as mentor them in order to assist them to achieve their goals and aspirations both on and off the ice.
