Giulio Carlo Argan for the first time offered what has since become perhaps the prevalent interpretation of Ba roque art. base d on the classical tradition of rhetoric'. The primary source book on the subject. Arist0tle's treatise on rhetoric. became available in Italian translation in 1570. The wide influence of Argan ·s essay was very salubrious. suggesting as it did that Baroque style. often regarded as a decadent superabundance of ornament and conceit. could better be under stood positively as a deliberate and sophisticated technique of persuasion. T he second paper. published by RudolfWiukower in 1963, compared the use ofanciem models by Poussin. the arch classicist of France. and Bernini, the outstanding representative of Italian Baroque 2 exuberance . With great perspicuity Wittkower showed from preparatory studies how classical sources functioned in diametrically opposite ways in the development of their works. Poussin would typicall y start with a dynamic. ··Baroque" design. into which ancient models would then intervene to produce a restrained. classicizing final version: Bernini. on the other hand. would often start with a classical prototype. which he would then transform into a free and volatile ·'Baroque'· solution. -

Solomon, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Director of NuVox Communications, who makes his home in Nashville, Tennessee; and WHEREAS, David Solomon embarked upon a career as an accountant when his father, Frazier Solomon, former Director of State Audit and Personnel Director of the Office of the Comptroller of the Treasury of the State of Tennessee, read bedtime stories to him from an accounting manual from the age of four; David grew up to be the husband of a CPA and the son-in-law of a CPA; and WHEREAS, Mr. Solomon earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from David Lipscomb University in Nashville in 1981 and went to work for the public accounting firm of HJR0732 01251056 -1- KPMG Peat Marwick; during his thirteen years at KPMG Peat Marwick, he rose to the rank of partner, gaining experience in public and private capital markets, financial management and reporting; and WHEREAS, David Solomon left in 1994 to join Brooks Fiber Properties (BFP) as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, as well as Chief Financial Officer, Secretary and Director of Brooks Telecommunications Corporation until it was acquired by BFP in January 1996; while at BFP, he was involved in all aspects of strategic development, raised over $1.6 billion in equity and debt, and built or acquired systems in 44 markets; and WHEREAS, since 1998, when BFP was sold to MCI WorldCom in a $3.4 billion transaction, Mr. -

INITIATIVE FOR CUNEIFORM ENCODING PROPOSAL November 1, 2003 [IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the pressures of time and other considerations this is one of two proposals submitted to the Unicode Technical Committee by the Initiative for Cuneiform Encoding prior to the UTC meeting at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Nov. 4-7, 2003. This is NOT, however, intended as two competing proposals; it is merely insurance to make sure all exigencies are covered before the ICE proposal presentation at UTC. We intend to present a single proposal.] We find ourselves at an historic crux in the history of writing. From our vantage point we can look backwards 5600 years to the beginnings of the world's first writing, cuneiform, and we can look forward into a future where that heritage will be preserved. International computer standards make it possible. Sumero-Akkadian cuneiform is the world's oldest and longest used writing system. The earliest texts appear in Mesopotamia around 3600 BC and the last native cuneiform texts were written around 75 AD. The ancient scribes pressed the ends of their styluses into damp clay in order to write the approximately 800 different syllabic, logographic, or taxographic signs of this complex, poly-valent script. The clay tablets were sun-dried or baked by fire and were thus preserved in the sands of the Near East for millennia. Since the decipherment of Babylonian cuneiform some 150 years ago museums have accumulated perhaps 300,000 tablets written in most of the major languages of the Ancient Near East - Sumerian, Akkadian (Babylonian and Assyrian), Eblaite, Hittite, Hurrian, and Elamite. -

It lasted about 200 years from 2300 BC to 2100 BC. Originally the Sumerians lived in the southern part of Mesopotamia and the Akkadians lived in the northern part. They had similar governments and cultures, but spoke different languages. The governments had individual city-states, where each city had its own ruler that controlled the city and the surrounding area. The city-states were not initially united and often warred with one another. Eventually, the Akkadian rulers started to see the advantage to uniting many of their cities under a single nation and began forming alliances to work together. Sargon the Great rose to power around 2300 BC. According to Sumerian literature, Sargon was born to an Akkadian high priestess and a poor father, maybe a gardener. His mother abandoned him by putting him a reed woven basket and let it float down the river, like Moses a thousand years later. Sargon was rescued and made friends with the goddess Ishtar and was brought up in the king’s court. Sargon built himself a new city at Akkad and made himself the king of it when he grew up. He gradually conquered all the land around it, making the Akkadian Empire. The powerful Sumerian city of Uruk attacked Akkad, but they fought back and eventually conquered Uruk. Sargon went on to conquer all of the Sumerian city-states and united northern and southern Mesopotamia under a single ruler. -

CHAPTER FOURTEEN ANIMAL SACRIFICE IN ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIAN RELIGION JOANN SCURLOCK The relationship between men and gods in ancient Mesopotamia was cemented by regular offerings and occasional sacrifices of ani mals. In addition, there were divinatory sacrifices, treaty sacrifices, and even "covenant" sacrifices. The dead, too, were entitled to a form of sacrifice. What follows is intended as a broad survey of ancient Mesopotamian practices across the spectrum, not as an essay on the developments that must have occurred over the course of several millennia of history, nor as a comparative study of regional differences. REGULAR OFFERINGS I Ancient Mesopotamian deities expected to be fed twice a day with out fail by their human worshipers.2 As befitted divine rulers, they also expected a steady diet of meat. Nebuchadnezzar II boasts that he increased the offerings for his gods to new levels of conspicuous consumption. Under his new scheme, Marduk and $arpanitum were to receive on their table "every day" one fattened ungelded bull, fine long fleeced sheep (which they shared with the other gods of Baby1on),3 fish, birds,4 bandicoot rats (Englund 1995: 37-55; cf. I On sacrifices in general, see especially Dhorme (1910: 264-77) and Saggs (1962: 335-38). 2 So too the god of the Israelites (Anderson 1992: 878). For specific biblical refer ences to offerings as "food" for God, see Blome (1934: 13). COOPER PROBLEMS OF C..\NONlCl'TY AND IDENTITY FORMATION IN A NCIENT EGYPT AND MESOPOTAMIA There is evidence of a regional identity in early Babylonia, but it does not seem to be of the Sumerian ethno-lingusitic sort. Sumerian Edited by identity as such appears only as an artifact of the scribal literary KIM RYHOLT curriculum once the Sumerian language had to be acquired through GOJKO B AR .I AMOVIC educati on rather than as a mother tongue. By the late second millennium, it appears there was no notion that a separate Sumerian ethno-lingui stic population had ever existed. My title puts Sumerian literature before Sumerian identity, and in so doing anticipates my conclusion, which will be that there was little or no Sumerian identity as such - in the sense of "We are all Sumerians!" outside of Sumerian literature and the scribal milieu that composed and transmitted it. By "Sumerian literature," I mean the corpus of compositions in Sumerian known from manuscripts that date primarily 1 to the first half of the 18 h century BC. With a few notable exceptions, the compositions themselves originated in the preceding three centuries, that is, in what Assyriologists call the Ur III and Isin-Larsa (or Early Old Babylonian) periods. I purposely eschew the too fraught and contested term "canon," preferring the very neutral "corpus" instead, while recognizing that because nearly all of our manuscripts were produced by students, the term "curriculum" is apt as well. 1 The geographic designation "Babylonia" is used here for the region to the south of present day Baghdad, the territory the ancients would have called "Sumer and Akkad." I will argue that there is indeed evidence for a 3rd millennium pan-Babylonian regional identity, but little or no evidence that it was bound to a Sumerian mother-tongue community. -

Journal of Ancient History 2019; 7(1): 1–31 Melanie Groß* and David Kertai Becoming Empire: Neo-Assyrian palaces and the creation of courtly culture https://doi.org/10.1515/jah-2018-0026 Abstract: Assyria (911–612 BCE) can be described as the founder of the imperial model of kingship in the ancient Near East. The Assyrian court itself, however, remains poorly understood. Scholarship has treated the court as a disembodied, textual entity, separated from the physical spaces it occupied – namely, the pa- laces. At the same time, architectural analyses have examined the physical struc- tures of the Assyrian palaces, without consideration for how these structures were connected to people’s lives and works. The palaces are often described as se- cluded, inaccessible locations. This study presents the first model of the Assyrian court contextualized in its actual palaces. It provides a nuanced model highlight- ing how the court organized the immense flow of information, people and goods entering the palace as a result of the empire’s increased size and complexity. It argues that access to the king was regulated by three gates of control which were manned by specific types of personnel and a more situational organization that moved within the physical spaces of the palace and was contingent on the king’s activity. Keywords: court culture, kingship, Assyrian Empire, royal palace As the first in a long sequence of empires to rule the Middle East, Assyria can be described as the founder of the imperial model of kingship. From the annals of Hattusili I we know that in his 3rd year the Hurrian enemy attacked his kingdom. Thanks to the text of Hattusili I (“ruler of Kussara and (who) reign the city of Hattusa”) we can be certain that c. 60 years after the abandonment of the city of Kanesh, Hurrian armies extensively entered the kingdom of Hatti. Remarkable is that Hattusili mentioned that it was not a king or a kingdom who had attacked, but had used an expression “the Hurrian enemy”. Which might point that formerly attacks, raids or wars with Hurrians armies were known by Hattusili king of Kussara. And therefore the threatening expression had arisen in Hittite: “the Hurrian enemy”. Translation of Gary Beckman 2008, The Ancient Near East, editor Mark W. Chavalas, 220. The cuneiform texts of the annal are bilingual: Babylonian and Nesili (Hittite). Note: 16. Babylonian text: ‘the enemy from Ḫanikalbat entered my land’. The Babylonian text of the bilingual is more specific: “the enemy of Ḫanigal9 bat”. Therefore the scholar N.B. Jankowska1 thought that apparently the Hurrian kingdom Hanigalbat had existed probably from an earlier date before the reign of Hattusili i.e. before c. 1650 BC. Normally with the term Mittani one is pointing to the mighty Hurrian kingdom of the 15th century BC 2. Ignace J. Gelb reported 3 on “the dragomans of the Habigalbatian soldiers/workers” in an Old Babylonian tablet of Amisaduqa, who was a contemporary with Hattusili I.
