In the mandatory, integrative and non-confessional school subject of Religious Education in Sweden, all students are taught together regardless of religious or secular affiliation. The overall aim of this thesis is to explore and analyse how Religious Education (RE) can be socially constructed in the upper secondary school classroom practice in the pluralistic context of contemporary Sweden. The result is based on findings from participant observations of 125 Religious Education lessons at three upper secondary schools in Sweden, both on vocational programs and on preparatory programs for higher education. Discourse analysis, curriculum theory, and didaktik of religion are used as theoretical and analytic approaches. The findings indicate that a secularist discourse was hegemonic in the classroom practice and implied norm of talking about religion, religions and worldviews as something outdated and belonging to history. A non-religious, atheistic position was articulated as neutral and unbiased in relation to the subject matter and was associated with being a rational, critically thinking person. However, there were also spiritual and swedishness discourses of religion that in some respects challenged the hegemonic discourse, but also enforced it. The programs at upper secondary schools were influenced by different educational discourses called a private discourse and an academic rational discourse, which affected the construction of the subject in these different contexts.     T HE DEVELOPMENT OF PRINTING IN PRESENT - D A Y F INLAND AND E S T O N I A I N THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY By Tiiu Reimo This article aims at giving a comparative overview of the early stage of printing in the areas of present-day Finland and Estonia. The overview is based on the analysis of scholarly literature and on book data registered in retrospective bibliographies. In the development of printing in Finland and Estonia, many similar features are observable: the foundation of printing shops took place approximately at the same time, and printing shops were established by the same institutions, i.e. universities and gymnasia. The output of the printing houses cannot be fully reconstructed as much printed matter has perished. The analysis of the surviving print production shows likeness in typology of academic publications as well as of books in vernacular languages. Introduction For centuries, books have been the main medium in communicating knowledge and fostering intellectual development. Books from the past preserve cultural memory and are therefore also important for the future. The history of books and printing has been of interest to many scholars both in Finland and Estonia. The large amount of scholarly literature in this field reflects the importance assigned to the printed word in the development of national cultures. Thus, it is not a coincidence that the history of vernacular (Estonian- and Finnish-language) book culture should have been one of the preoccupations of scholars involved in the National Awakening movements on both sides of the Gulf of Finland in the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

I årsberättelsen dokumenteras både vardag och fest, där ändå betoningen kommer att ligga på många av de olika projekt som de facto präglar vår skolas vardag.

The aim is to give an overview of the practice of disputations in Swedish gymnasiums and also (to some extent) in primary schools. Characteristics and functions of printed gymnasial dissertations are analyzed and discussed, through consideration of typographic appearance, distribution in time, and choice of subject, as well as the role of the different participants (respondent, opponent, praeses and audience) and the question of authorship. Particular attention is paid to the social role of gymnasial dissertations by examination of paratexts (social peritexts), such as dedications, prefaces and congratulatory poetry.

    sofia kotilainen Literacy Skills as Local Intangible Capital The History of a Rural Lending Library c. 1860–1920 Studia Fennica Historica The Finnish Literature Society (SKS) was founded in 1831 and has, from the very beginning, engaged in publishing operations. It nowadays publishes literature in the fields of ethnology and folkloristics, linguistics, literary research and cultural history. The first volume of the Studia Fennica series appeared in 1933. Since 1992, the series has been divided into three thematic subseries: Ethnologica, Folkloristica and Linguistica. Two additional subseries were formed in 2002, Historica and Litteraria. The subseries Anthropologica was formed in 2007. In addition to its publishing activities, the Finnish Literature Society maintains research activities and infrastructures, an archive containing folklore and literary collections, a research library and promotes Finnish literature abroad.
