UNIVERSITY OF MALTA THE INTERPRETATION OF UPPER PALAEOLITHIC PARIETAL PAINTINGS BY: SARAH BUSUTTIL APRIL 2002 DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS AND ARCHAEOLOGY, FACULTY OF ARTS IN PART FULFILLMENT OF A B.A. (Hons.) DEGREE IN ARCHAEOLOGY I PREFACE. Aii is one of the factors of human life that fall under the category of symbolism. In my study I will focus on the paintings of Upper Palaeolithic Western Europe that are found in the Franco-Cantabrian caves. My interest in this study was triggered off in my search for the first tangible and intensely manifested fonn of art that the Homo Sapiens Sapiens has produced. In fact, the Franco-Cantabrian caves attest to the grandest form of symbolism of our human ancestors. It is through this same symbolism that man has managed to pass on some of his intrinsic beliefs in a simplified pictorial way. Yet, it is these 'simplified' messages that have proved so difficult for scholars to read what our primitive ancestors wanted to say. This has all resulted from the fact that we are studying a stage from prehistory. Since the time of the first discoveries of these paintings, controversies have been rampant as to how we could interpret such a heritage. In order to try and get a good stronghold on the wide picture, my aim was to follow the development of the theories that have been proposed up to now, together with a concise resume of the paintings themselves. The biggest question ever that continues to elude scholars is the meaning of these widely acclaimed painted canvases. -

Defining Magdalenian cultural groups in Franco-Cantabria by the formal analysis of portable artworks ∗ Olivia Rivero & Georges Sauvet The motifs, techniques and stylistic features of Upper Palaeolithic art offer enormous Paris potential for the investigation of social and cultural interactions in south-western France and northern Spain during the later stages of the last ice age. The key regions of Aquitaine, Cantabria and the Pyrenees clearly share an overall family resemblance, but detailed analysis of horse heads on portable objects of bone, antler and stone from Magdalenian contexts reveal that particular features can be attributed to different Madrid regions at different periods. Furthermore, the 0 km 500 patterns of interconnection are structured very N differently in the Upper Magdalenian than in the Middle Magdalenian, perhaps as rising temperatures in the latter period led to territorial expansion and social realignment. The pioneers in the study of Palaeolithic art used it as a chronological marker within an evolutionary perspective (Breuil 1952). Leroi-Gourhan (1965) subsequently proposed a chronocultural scheme of four stages, based on the evolution of animal representations using features such as the perspective of horns and hooves, the number of legs by pair and the presence of anatomical details and conventions. Actual remains of plants are more abundant than is generally realised, while the indirect clues provided by tools, human teeth and artistic depictions help to fill out the picture. INTRODUCTION This paper summarises the evidence for the use of wood and other plant materials during the Palaeolithic of western Europe. It is not intended to be an exhaustive catalogue of examples, nor does it overlook the obvious fact that use of plants will have varied enormously through both space and time according to needs and availability. However, we hope to demonstrate that a surprisingly wide range of direct and indirect clues remain which can help to assess the role played by these perishable materials in the Palaeolithic. WOOD The use of wooden posts in the construction of frames for dwellings (tents or houses) is well attested for the Palaeolithic (e.g., see G,~bori-Csfink, 1976), and structures which seem to have included wood as a building material have been dated as early as the Lower Palaeolithic (e.g., Terra Amata, see de Lumley, 1969). -
