This breathtaking modern structure consists of 19 galleries clustered around a central atrium that soars skyward for 165 feet, beautifully illuminated by natural light. The titanium roof is a unique, twisting, curving, metallic sculpture that integrates the city’s industrial waterfront with the nearby historic and business districts. ISBN 1-84171-429-1 Reviewed by Marta Camps Human Origins Laboratory, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution This volume stems from a colloquium organized within the XIV UISPP Congress in Liège (Belgium), in 2001. It was quite clear to those who attended that the subject was not only an interesting and important one, but far richer than the short session could accommodate. Fortunately—particularly after notable absences among the scheduled speakers—this volume was successfully compiled and stands as a good, reliable source of information for scholars working on the European Upper Paleolithic or on the historiography of this research topic. Before commenting on the individual papers, I think it is necessary to highlight the originality of its focus, which is seldom a subject of study in itself. At first, it may look like the recollection of personal anecdotes, from American researchers who work in Europe and Europeans who are working with American colleagues in joint projects, but it soon becomes obvious that it is much more than just “their personal stories.” The way in which we understand the European Paleolithic at present has been shaped in part by many of the events, differences, and combinations of the two perspectives that the contributions mentioned below portray. Straus offers an extremely detailed account of the historical development of American participation in European projects since the late 19th century. At that time, the purpose of American visits was not only the collection of material, but also to train young workers.

Extinct hominin taxa are present in both Eurasia and Africa during this interval, but the African archeological record has played little role in discussions of the demographic expansion of Homo sapiens, unlike the Aurignacian. Sites in Eurasia and Africa by 42 ka show the earliest examples of personal ornaments that result from extensive modification of raw materials, a greater investment of time that may reflect increased their use in increasingly diverse and complex social networks.

Body size is a strong predictor of brain size, but the size variation in brain size independent of body size remains to be explained. Several hypotheses have been proposed, including the social-brain hypothesis which states that a large brain is an adaptation to living in a group with numerous and complex social interactions. In this thesis I investigate the allometric scaling of brain size and neocortex size and test several adaptive hypotheses in Artiodactyla (even-toed ungulates), using a phylogenetic comparative method where the trait is modeled as an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. I fit models of brain size and neocortex size, absolute and relative, in response to diet, habitat, gregariousness, gestation length, breeding group size, sexual dimorphism, and metabolic rate. Most of the investigated variables have no effect on the relative size of brain and neocortex, but the optimal relative size of the brain and neocortex is 20% and 30% larger, respectively, in gregarious species than in solitary species.

    Palaeontologia Electronica palaeo-electronica.org Healed antler fracture from a giant deer (Megaloceros giganteus) from the Pleistocene in Poland Kamilla Pawłowska, Krzysztof Stefaniak, and Dariusz Nowakowski ABSTRACT We evaluated the skull of an ancient giant deer with a deformity of one antler. The skull was found in the 1930s in the San River near Barycz, in southeastern Poland. Its dating (39,800±1000 yr BP) corresponds to MIS-3, when the giant deer was wide- spread in Europe. Our diagnostics for the antler included gross morphology, radiogra- phy, computed tomography, and histopathology. We noted signs of fracture healing of the affected antler, including disordered arrangement of lamellae, absence of osteons, and numerous Volkmann’s canals remaining after blood vessel loss. The antler defor- mity appears to be of traumatic origin, with a healing component. No similar evaluation process has been described previously for this species. To test its compositional integrity, we examine data from 52 levels identified as Aurignacian by their excavators. Classical indicators of the French Aurignacian are reviewed and used to contextualize data from other regions, allowing us to assess whether or not the Aurignacian can be considered a single, coherent archaeological entity. A Review of the Middle Pleistocene Record in Eurasia NICOLAS ROLLAND THIS SURVEY OF THE EVIDENCE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF DOMESTIC FIRE and home bases integrates naturalistic factors and culture historical stages and processes into an anthropological theoretical framework. The main focus will be to review fire technology in terms of (1) its characteristics in prehistoric times and its earliest established evidence; (2) the role it played, among other factors, in the appearance of ancient hominid home bases sensu stricto, as part of a key formative stage during the transition from Lower to Middle Paleolithic; and (3) current findings and debates relating to the role of anthropogenic fire and the evidence of a home base occupation at Zhoukoudian (ZKD) Locality 1 in China. It is con­ cluded that, despite complex site formation processes and postdepositional distur­ bances, the sum of direct evidence and off-site context at Zhoukoudian consti­ tutes a record sufficiently compelling for continuing to regard it as a key early hominid home base occurrence in East Asia. This revised verdict has important implications for evaluating and comparing Middle Pleistocene biocultural evolu­ tion and developments. This analysis seeks to avoid both excessive biological or environmental reduc­ tionism, and treating "cultural" behavior as entirely emergent without reference to its natural historical antecedents. Hominids retained a primate omnivorous diet, but added a meat-eating and meat-procurement component that nlOved them up the trophic pyramid to compete with other carnivores. Ground-living hominids also preserved the primate system of living in large local groups for safety and a diurnal lifestyle.

Stefan Cel Mare 1, Md-2028, Chisinau, Moldova; Manuscript received 02.06.2014; revision E-mail: [email protected] accepted 11.11.2014 ISSN 1612 - 4138 Abstract This article proposes a brief overview of opinions on cervid systematics and phylogeny, as well as some unresolved taxonomical issues, morphology and systematics of the most important or little known mainland cervid genera and species from Late Miocene and Plio-Pleistocene of Western Eurasia and from Late Pleistocene and Holocene of North Africa. The Late Miocene genera Cervavitus and Pliocervus from Western Eurasia are included in the subfamily Capreolinae. A cervid close to Cervavitus could be a direct forerunner of the modern genus Alces. The matching of results of molecular phylogeny and data from cervid paleontological record revealed the paleozoogeographical context of origin of modern cervid subfamilies. Subfamilies Capreolinae and Cervinae are regarded as two Late Miocene adaptive radiations within the Palearctic zoogeographic province and Eastern part of Oriental province respectively. The modern clade of Eurasian Capreolinae is significantly depleted due to climate shifts that repeatedly changed climate-geographic conditions of Northern Eurasia. The clade of Cervinae that evolved in stable subtropical conditions gave several later radiations (including the latest one with Cervus, Rusa, Panolia, and Hyelaphus) and remains generally intact until present days. During Plio-Pleistocene, cervines repeatedly dispersed in Palearctic part of Eurasia, however many of those lineages have become extinct.

    Geology fact sheet: Deer Today six species of deer live wild in the UK. If you look hard enough, you can find them all somewhere in Norfolk. However, only Red Deer and Roe Deer are considered ‘native’ – having made it here without the help of us humans. Fallow Deer are generally considered an ‘introduced’ animal, as the Normans brought them th here in the 11 century. However, they used to roam the UK before an especially cold period in the last Ice Age wiped them out – so perhaps we should think of them as being ‘re-introduced’? If you were on Norfolk’s Deep History Coast half a million to a million years ago, you would have seen many more types of deer nibbling on the grass and munching on the leaves nearby. As well as familiar Red, Roe and Fallow Deer, there would have been Giant Deer, Bush- antlered Deer, Weighing Scale Elk, Robert’s Fallow Deer, and the unbelievable-looking Broad-fronted Moose. From around 60,000 years ago, during the colder periods of the Ice Age, Reindeer would have mingled with Woolly Mammoths on the Norfolk tundra! A size comparison of some of the deer that lived in Norfolk up to a million years ago. Giant Deer Formerly known as the ‘Irish Elk’, the name Giant Deer is now used for this group, as these animals were neither exclusively Irish, or closely related to living species of Elk! From DNA analysis, we now know that they were probably more closely related to Fallow Deer. Megaloceros giganteus, the largest species of Giant Deer stood over two metres (seven foot) at the shoulder and had the largest antlers of any deer.
