Diese Muster wurden mit verschiede- nen biologischen Charakteristika verknüpft und mit denen von freilebenden Tieren verglichen. Der Bre- itengrad des natürlichen Verbreitungsgebietes korreliert stark mit dem in Menschenobhut beobachteten BPB. Nur 11% der Spezies wechselten ihr reproduktives Muster zwischen Wildnis und Gefangenschaft, wobei für saisonale Spezies die errechnete Tageslichtlänge zum Zeitpunkt der Konzeption für freilebende und in Menschenobhut gehaltene Populationen gleich war. Reproduktive Saisonalität erklärt zusätzliche Varianzen im Verhältnis von Körpergewicht und Tragzeit, wobei saisonalere Spezies für ihr Körpergewicht eine kürzere Tragzeit aufweisen. Rückschliessend ist festzuhalten, dass Photoperiodik, speziell die abso- lute Tageslichtlänge, genetisch fixierter Auslöser für die Fortpflanzung ist, und dass die Plastizität der Tragzeit unterstützend auf die erfolgreiche Verbreitung der Wiederkäuer in höheren Breitengraden wirkte. A dataset on 110 wild ruminant species kept in captivity in temperate-zone zoos was used to describe their reproductive patterns quantitatively (determining the birth peak breadth BPB as the number of days in which 80% of all births occur); then this pattern was linked to various biological characteristics, and compared with free-ranging animals. Globally, latitude of natural origin highly correlates with BPB observed in captivity, with species being more seasonal originating from higher latitudes. -

Whole-Genome Sequencing of Wild Siberian Musk

Worldwide, the population size of Siberian musk deer is threatened by severe illegal poaching for commercially valuable musk and meat, habitat losses, and forest fire. At present, this species is categorized as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. However, the genetic information of Siberian musk deer is largely unexplored. Results: Here, we produced 3.10 Gb draft assembly of wild Siberian musk deer with a contig N50 of 29,145 bp and a scaffold N50 of 7,955,248 bp. We annotated 19,363 protein-coding genes and estimated 44.44% of the genome to be repetitive. Our phylogenetic analysis reveals that wild Siberian musk deer is closer to Bovidae than to Cervidae. Comparative analyses showed that the genetic features of Siberian musk deer adapted in cold and high-altitude environments. We sequenced two additional genomes of Siberian musk deer constructed demographic history indicated that changes in effective population size corresponded with recent glacial epochs. Finally, we identified several candidate genes that may play a role in the musk secretion based on transcriptome analysis. Conclusions: Here, we present a high-quality draft genome of wild Siberian musk deer, which will provide a valuable genetic resource for further investigations of this economically important musk deer. -

Box 32379, Lusaka, Zambia; 4Kavango Transfrontier Wild Animal, Gaborone, Botswana Abstract: Babesia spp. were detected from 4 asymptomatic pukus captured on a game ranch in central Zambia in Octo- ber 2008. Blood smears were examined in 4 species of aymptomatic free-ranging antelopes, namely the puku (Kobus vor danii), reedbuck (Redunca arundinum), bushbuck (Tragelaphus sylvaticus), and kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), and showed the presence of Babesia parasites only in the puku. In the puku, the prevalence of babesiosis was estimated at 33.3% (n=12), while the overall prevalence in all examined animals was 8.5% (n=47). The parasites showed morphologi- cal characteristics of paired ring-like stages with the length varying between 1.61 µm and 3.02 µm (mean=2.12 µm, n= 27; SD=0.76 µm). Both the infected and non-infected pukus showed good body condition scores (BCS), while the domi- nant tick species detected from all animals were Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Rhipicephalus spp., and Boophilus spp. -

Abstract: We re-assessed the view of a major woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) population decline in Alberta. Several historical publications and provincial documents refer to this drastic decline as the major premise for the desig• nation of Alberta's woodland caribou an endangered species. In the past, wildlife management and inventory techniques were speculative and limited by a lack of technology, access and funding. The accepted trend of the decline is based on many speculations, opinions and misinterpretation of data and is unsubstantiated. Many aerial surveys failed to reduce variance and did not estimate sightability. Most surveys have underestimated numbers and contributed unreliable data to support a decline. Through forest fire protection and the presence of extensive wetlands, the majority of potential cari• bou habitat still exists. Recreational and aboriginal subsistence hunting does not appear to have contributed greatly to mortality, although data are insufficient for reliable conclusions. Wolf (Canis lupus), population fluctuations are inconc• lusive and do not provide adequate information on which to base prey population trends. The incidence of documen• ted infection by parasites in Alberta is low and likely unimportant as a cause of the proposed decline. -

Bmo, 63, 1994: 109-113. • Values of 17 blood serum biochemical indicators obtained in 1- to4-day old antelopes of 10 spe cies of the Subfamilies Reduncinae andHippotraginae kept in the Zoological Garden at DvQr Kd- 10v6 are reported. Interspecies differences in the values were more pronounced in the Hippotragi nae than in the Reduncinae. The values recorded for the neonatal antelopes were compared with the published data on adult animals of the same species kept in the Zoological Garden at DvQr Kd lov6. Antelopes, neonates, captivity, blood serum, biochemistry. Blood serum biochemical values of captive antelopes have received little attention to date. The present study reports the values obtained in neonatal antelopes of 10 species of the subfamilies Reduncinae and Hippotraginae, namely, mountain reedbucks (Reduncafulvorufula), Lady Grey's waterbucks (Kobus megaceros), lechwe water bucks (Kobus leche), defassa waterbucks (Kobus ellipsiprymnus defassa), common waterbucks (Kobus ellipsip rymnus ellipsiprymnus), roan antelopes (Hippotragus equinus), sable antelopes (Hippotragus niger), addax (Addax nasomaculatus), scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah), gemsboks (Oryx gazella gazella) in the Zoological Gar- I den at DvQr KIilov6 during the period 1982 to 1990. Materials and Methods Blood samples were withdrawn from the vena jugularis of manually restrained clinically healthy 1- to 4-day old antelopes on the occasion of preventive measures throughout the year. -

BARBOUR A fragment of the lower jaw of a large fossil mammal with two well-worn teeth was dug up in June 1918, at a depth of 20 feet, while digging a cess pool at Bradshaw, York County, Nebraska. This unique specimen, accessioned 7-7-18, was brought to the Nebraska State Museum by A. Archie Dorsey, and was donated by C. B. Palmet, both of Bradshaw. It undoubtedly occurred in loess, which is thickly as well. as extensively de veloped in this region. It is a ruminant jaw, the teeth preserved being P4 and m 1 • The characteristic pattern of the premolar excludes refer ence to the Bovidae, and leaves the choice between the Gi raffidae, Pa~aeomerycidae, and certain large Cervidae.
