Since I am in China at the moment, I am locked out of quite a few of the resources from which I put together my weekly newsletter – facebook, twitter, dropbox, all google facilities and various other normally inoffensive websites, not to mention my own gmail account. So if your results aren't there or I haven't responded to your email, it may be that I was just not able to pick them up. Email me via [email protected] and I can rectify in next week's newsletter. And now onto business! This weeks' Walker of the Week goes to 23 year old Australian representative Dane Bird-Smith. Racing in the IAAF World Championship 20km race on Sunday morning, he overcome a mid-race bingle and an upset stomach to finish eighth, confirming his status as the next big thing in Australian walking. Dane was among a group of several walkers who crashed over a flower bed in the middle of the course at the 12km mark but he was able to regroup to claim eighth spot in a time of 1:21:37, three places better than on his world titles debut two years ago in Moscow. -

Thanks to the many correspondents who forward race results and other informational items to me. We'll be back again next week with the first issue of our new season. CONGRATULATIONS TO NATHAN AND ANTIONETTE DEAKES ON THE NEW ARRIVAL Big news from Canberra where Antionette and Nathan Deakes are at the end of a long wait. To quote from Nathan's facebook announcement: Antoinette and I are extremely proud to announce the arrival of Mia Angela, born Thursday 20 September, weighing 4.21kg (9lb 5oz). Mum and bub are doing amazingly well, Dad is in awe. And thank you for all of the well wishes thus far, they have been greatly appreciated. Heartiest congrats to the new mum and dad. SARWC TEAM RELAYS, PEACOCK ROAD, ADELAIDE, SATURDAY 8 SEPTEMBER And now a catchup result from earlier this month in Adelaide when the South Australian Racewalking Club held its annual Team Relays on Saturday 8 September. Teams of four walkers race 1km legs over a total race distance of 8km and it was Kim Mottrom's team which took the overall honours, helped by Kim's very fast 3 laps. -

FRONT COVER: Kirdyapkin races through the Brandenburg Gate on his way to becoming 50k World Champion. PHOTO: by Jeff Salvage ALSO: Scott Davis makes a huge breakthrough in Switzerland. Editorial People all over the world love race walking. It started here, and now reaches into every continent. I often find myself in contact with people in far-off exotic locations. I’ve just recently returned from racing in Switzerland and France. Faces become familiar from race to race abroad, and people eventually introduce themselves and over time become friends. Many readers have told me how they have made long- term friends at overseas events. Several people at the Swiss event turned up six days later at the French event 500 miles away, and supported each other just because they had that one common link. Race Walking is treated slightly differently within each country, but walkers have a huge respect for each other whether they are Olympians or just fitness walkers. UK walkers race abroad in many countries each year, and welcome overseas walkers to events here. This magazine is now sent to readers in twenty different countries, and growing... People queuing behind me at the post office each month really hate me, as I have so many international magazines to send, one-by-one! On my holiday I found the source of the River Danube and ceremoniously set one of my old trainers floating down it. An hour later, the other one was set floating down the River Rhine. (Please don’t litter!) You can’t just throw away something that has brought you so much enjoyment! Am I crazy? Aren’t all race walkers.. -

Age Graded Percentages are the accepted method of grading masters walks across the age groups. Any walk of over 80% is generally regarded as excellent and anything over 90% is outstanding. On Saturday at Middle Park in the Victorian Masters 10km road walk championship, Heather (W65, 57:50, 95.68%) and Andrew (M65, 53:05, 95.75%) raced superbly, showing that they will be hard to beat in next month's World Masters Championships in Lyon, France. Andrew and Heather walking in Middle Park on Saturday WHAT'S COMING UP Next Saturday sees our next round of VRWC Points Races at Middle Park, with fixture as shown below.
