The IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019 is a great stageA for you to challenge the “power and skill” of the world, and it has an important meaning as a prelude to 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games which is quickly approaching. Expand your athletic ability you have gained through competition experiences and years of hard training here in Doha and make a huge step towards the grand stage. Along with your athletic ability, human quality is also very important. Athletics is an individual sport except for relays, but it is necessary to have Team JAPAN awareness. The consciousness of competing as a team will also enhance your human quality, and that rise helps to improve individual competitiveness. For athletes and staff, I ask you to unite by respecting each other, and have the spirit of “One for All, All for One”. -

FRONT COVER: Kirdyapkin races through the Brandenburg Gate on his way to becoming 50k World Champion. PHOTO: by Jeff Salvage ALSO: Scott Davis makes a huge breakthrough in Switzerland. Editorial People all over the world love race walking. It started here, and now reaches into every continent. I often find myself in contact with people in far-off exotic locations. I’ve just recently returned from racing in Switzerland and France. Faces become familiar from race to race abroad, and people eventually introduce themselves and over time become friends. Many readers have told me how they have made long- term friends at overseas events. Several people at the Swiss event turned up six days later at the French event 500 miles away, and supported each other just because they had that one common link. Race Walking is treated slightly differently within each country, but walkers have a huge respect for each other whether they are Olympians or just fitness walkers. UK walkers race abroad in many countries each year, and welcome overseas walkers to events here. This magazine is now sent to readers in twenty different countries, and growing... People queuing behind me at the post office each month really hate me, as I have so many international magazines to send, one-by-one! On my holiday I found the source of the River Danube and ceremoniously set one of my old trainers floating down it. An hour later, the other one was set floating down the River Rhine. (Please don’t litter!) You can’t just throw away something that has brought you so much enjoyment! Am I crazy? Aren’t all race walkers.. -

AUSTRALIAN RACEWALKING CHAMPIONSHIPS MEN: 2017-2020 This completes my series of articles which follow the history of the Australasian and Australian racewalking champion- ships (along with other particularly significant races). Apart from the strong Australian contingent of walkers, the 20km fields boasted 18 overseas walkers (14 men and 4 women) from across the world – from Chile, Canada, Poland, USA, Lithuania, Japan, South Africa, Great Britain, Spain and New Zealand. The 7AM start time had been chosen to mitigate against the usually hot summer conditions in Adelaide but it was not needed on this occasion. It was cool and overcast with an expected top temperature of an unseasonally cool 21oC. -

Queensland walker Dane Bird-Smith, who turns 23 tomorrow, has scored the biggest victory thus far of his illustrious career, taking gold in the men's 20km walk in the World University Games in Gwanju, South Korea, last Thursday. Walking in rainy conditions, he led from the front for most of the race, eventually sprinting to final victory with 1:21:30. It was Dane's 7th major representative vest in 7 years. Before this week, his bests were 5th in the 2010 IAAF World Junior Champs 10,000m and 11th in the 2013 IAAF World Championships Open 20km. Walker of the Week What's Coming Up
HEEL AND TOE ONLINE The official organ of the Victorian Race Walking Club 2014/2015 Number 34 26 May 2015 VRWC Preferred Supplier of Shoes, clothes and sporting accessories. Address: RUNNERS WORLD, 598 High Street, East Kew, Victoria (Melways 45 G4) Telephone: 03 9817 3503 Hours: Monday to Friday: 9:30am to 5:30pm Saturday: 9:00am to 3:00pm Website: http://www.runnersworld.com.au Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Runners-World/235649459888840 WALKER OF THE WEEK This week, my Walker of the Week sees a double act with two of our best walkers sharing the limelight, both competing on Saturday and both producing outstanding times. Beki Smith, one of our 2012 Olympic reps, won the NSW women's 10km roadwalk championship with a huge PB time of 44:24 in Narralen while dual Olympian Chris Erickson won the Victorian men's 10km roadwalk title in an equally impressive 40:36. Chris has already been selected for this year's IAAF World Championships and I expect Beki to be added to the team once the walks qualifying period ends in early June. Left: Beki Lee walking in China early this month Right: Chris leads Quentin Rew in the 10km at Middle Park on Saturday WHAT'S COMING UP Next Saturday sees us back at Middle Park for another round of our VRWC Winter Season. But it is a bit different with prizes on offer to the winners of those male and female walkers who win the handicap in their respective events. Mark Donahoo has been watching everyone's form over the last few weeks and will have a handicap ready for you, based on what he expects you to walk on Saturday.
