MALE WALKERS SUPPORTING WOMEN’S 50K: A QUENTIN-SSENTIAL DUTY By Paul F. DeMeester I know. I misspelled the word “quintessential.” On purpose. The “Quentin-ssential” in the headline is a reference to New Zealand 50K specialist Quentin Rew, a veteran of two Olympics (27th at London 2012 in 3:55:03; 12th at Rio 2016 in 3:49:32) and five World Championships (23rd at Daegu 2011 in 4:08:46; 16th at Moscow 2013 in 3:50:27; 10th at Beijing 2015 in 3:48:48; 11th in London 2017 in 3:46:29; and 11th at Doha 2019 in 4:15:54). Rew has already qualified for Tokyo 2020, having bested the time limit of 3:50:00 by 12 seconds at the Japanese National Championship last year in Wajima. -

This was the only A qualifier done on the day in the horrendous conditions and it was her third win in a row in this annual championship. This confirmed her Olympic spot and was a dominant display. This week, I am going to balance the equation and announce my walker of the week as Jared Tallent. Jared and Claire flew out on the Sunday morning after their heroics in Hobart and both contested 20km races a week later in what was a big weekend carnival of walking in Chihuahua in Mexico – and both were successful, earning silvers in their respective events. Jared fought it out with Eder Sanchez of Mexico, taking silver in 1:21:50 while Claire fought it out with Portuguese walker Ines Henriques, also taking silver in 1:33:21. You can read about both their performances later in the newsletter. Jared and Claire with their second prize cheques in Chihuahua, along with Satoshi Yanagisawa (photo from Satoshi) MORE WALKERS ADDED TO THE AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM With the Australian T&F Olympic Trials completed last weekend in Melbourne, Athletics Australia has now released the names of the next group of Olympic selections and the walkers are to the fore. -

They were our two U15 3km winners at Middle Park last Saturday (Kathleen in 16:41 and Hayden in 15:51). Both Kathleen and Hayden race with us nearly every week and their dedication and persistence has paid off this season with lots of PBs and a great second half of the winter. Well done Kathleen and Hayden. Hayden and Kathleen in action on Saturday at Middle Park WHAT'S COMING UP Next Saturday sees VRWC walkers back at Middle Park for further winter season roadwalks. It will be a big day with a coaching session for our U9 and U12 walkers at 2PM (before their walks), followed by our Winter Season Presentations after the meet finishes. Unfortunately conditions could not have been much more challenging with gale force winds buffeting the walkers as they contested our annual 'Beat your Season Best' races. With prizes on offer, everyone was out to race hard and we actually saw plenty of people beat their Season Bests and some even doing PBs. The winners of each division (ie those who beat their SB by the most) are shown with an *. Terry Swan was in action with the camera once again and has already uploaded nearly 100 photos (including from our end of season presentations) to our photo gallery - http://vrwc.org.au/coppermine. What a great effort. Frances Attard was at work with video camera as well so I will advise when it goes online on YouTube. First to our 10km events where we saw two wonderful first up efforts by 13 yo Emily Hamilton (1:00:46) and 10 yo Mikhala Hodges (1:09:00). Both set new club records - Emily U14 and Mikhala U12 and U13. -

Since I am in China at the moment, I am locked out of quite a few of the resources from which I put together my weekly newsletter – facebook, twitter, dropbox, all google facilities and various other normally inoffensive websites, not to mention my own gmail account. So if your results aren't there or I haven't responded to your email, it may be that I was just not able to pick them up. Email me via [email protected] and I can rectify in next week's newsletter. And now onto business! This weeks' Walker of the Week goes to 23 year old Australian representative Dane Bird-Smith. Racing in the IAAF World Championship 20km race on Sunday morning, he overcome a mid-race bingle and an upset stomach to finish eighth, confirming his status as the next big thing in Australian walking. Dane was among a group of several walkers who crashed over a flower bed in the middle of the course at the 12km mark but he was able to regroup to claim eighth spot in a time of 1:21:37, three places better than on his world titles debut two years ago in Moscow. -

FRONT COVER: Kirdyapkin races through the Brandenburg Gate on his way to becoming 50k World Champion. PHOTO: by Jeff Salvage ALSO: Scott Davis makes a huge breakthrough in Switzerland. Editorial People all over the world love race walking. It started here, and now reaches into every continent. I often find myself in contact with people in far-off exotic locations. I’ve just recently returned from racing in Switzerland and France. Faces become familiar from race to race abroad, and people eventually introduce themselves and over time become friends. Many readers have told me how they have made long- term friends at overseas events. Several people at the Swiss event turned up six days later at the French event 500 miles away, and supported each other just because they had that one common link. Race Walking is treated slightly differently within each country, but walkers have a huge respect for each other whether they are Olympians or just fitness walkers. UK walkers race abroad in many countries each year, and welcome overseas walkers to events here. This magazine is now sent to readers in twenty different countries, and growing... People queuing behind me at the post office each month really hate me, as I have so many international magazines to send, one-by-one! On my holiday I found the source of the River Danube and ceremoniously set one of my old trainers floating down it. An hour later, the other one was set floating down the River Rhine. (Please don’t litter!) You can’t just throw away something that has brought you so much enjoyment! Am I crazy? Aren’t all race walkers.. -

So close! Declan has the rest of this year to stage further attacks on this longstanding mark and I am sure further opportunities will arise. To say Declan is a rising talent is an understatement! • 59 year old Victorian Simon Baker was awarded an OAM (Medal of the Order of Australia) in last Friday’s Australia Day Honours List - for services to athetics and racewalking in particular. To try to sumamrise Simon’s many contributions to racewalking in the context of this newsletter is an impossible ask – it would take a separate newsletter edition! So click on this link and read about it for yourself: http://www.vrwc.org.au/tim-archive/articles/wv-simon-baker.pdf.
