These floods caused considerable property damage and resulted in morphological changes to the channels and floodplains 1 of, the Hawkesbury system. This paper describes the flodd in the Hawkesbury-Nepean system in the reach'extending from Penrith to Pitt Town •. Storm Pattern An intense low pressure cell developed over the Coral Sea on the 16th March, 1978. This low pressure system travelled southeast towards the Queensland coast and gained in intensity (Fig.l). On the 18th March it,appeared that the cell would move eastwards away from Australia. However, the system reversed its direction of travel and moved inland. Resultant wind systems brought warm moist air from ,the east onto the .. " coast of New South Wal,es. Consequently, heavy rainfall$ occurred from f I .. the 18th to 24th March over the whole of eastern New South Wales. -

1 Pittwater Nature Issue 4 February 2021 News and stories from Bushcarers, Wildlife carers, Community and home gardens The Pittwater River and the Barrenjoey Tombolo We hear a lot about Climate Change and Sea Level Rise. How could this affect our coast- line? It’s happened before. If we’d come here during the last Ice Age, we wouldn’t recognise the place at all. About 14 000 years ago, the Pacific coastline was about 20km further east. Our beaches, so familiar today, did not exist. From today’s Palm Beach, you’d be going a long way downhill for a surf. And you’d need a thick wetsuit. But that landscape would have been familiar to Aboriginal people. When the sea level was lower, streams flowed fast- er and eroded bedrock in river channels. The Hawkesbury River has a huge catchment. Its fast flow eroded the old Pleistocene bedrock channel between Barrenjoey and Box Head so that it is about 125 metres below the present sea level. Seismic investigations of bedrock drainage patterns in Pittwater contained a surprise, for this waterway which now widens out to merge into Broken Bay did not join the ancient Hawkesbury River drainage channels to enter the sea north of Barrenjoey until very recent times, geologically speaking. Off West Head the channel swings abruptly eastward and heads for the ocean across bedrock between Barrenjoey and Palm Beach where the bedrock is at 76 metres below sea level. -

We discuss the landscapes of Botany Bay and particularly of the historic landing place at Kurnell (lat 34˚ 00’ S, long 151˚ 13’ E) (about 16 km south of central Sydney), as described in the journals of Lieutenant James Cook and Joseph Banks on the Endeavour voyage in 1770. We list 132 plant species that were collected at Botany Bay by Banks and Daniel Solander, the first scientific collections of Australian flora. The list is based on a critical assessment of unpublished lists compiled by authors who had access to the collection of the British Museum (now Natural History Museum), together with species from material at National Herbarium of New South Wales that has not been previously available. The list includes Bidens pilosa which has been previously regarded as an introduced species. In 1770 the Europeans set foot on Aboriginal land of the Dharawal people. Since that time the landscape has been altered in response to a succession of different land-uses; farming and grazing, commemorative tree planting, parkland planting, and pleasure ground and tourist visitation. -

Over the course of our journey we visited some 25 sites and surveyed 19, to ascertain the level of rubbish found in our built and natural environments and assess the effectiveness of various strategies to address litter. Its easy to become ‘litter blind’, so used to the bottles, cans, bags and butts swirling around the ground as you walk to work or relax at the beach. Equally, the untrained eye misses the piles of trash caught in garden undergrowth, windswept under piers and jetties or lost down the stormwater drain. Even ‘so called’ detailed studies fail to capture a genuine picture of the problem. -

It is maintained and operated by Roads and Maritime Services NSW (Roads and Maritime). Roads and Maritime proposes to upgrade the ferry ramps at Berowra Waters with precast concrete panels for the sections below the tide level and poured in situ ramp sections above the high water mark. Need for the proposal The proposal is required to maintain a safe ingress and egress for pedestrians and vehicles approaching the ferry. Maintenance inspections indicate the existing ferry ramps are showing signs of degradation that could pose a safety hazard for pedestrians and vehicles. Without a safe operating ferry at Berowra Waters motorist travelling between Berrilee and Berowra would be required to detour via Galston, a detour of about 19 kilometres. -
