MAVEN/SEP penetrating particle: protons > 100 MeV & e- > 600 keV MSL/RAD dose rate from primary GCRs >~ 100 MeV/nuc 3 ref# Guo et a! 2017 A$A %submitted& The fitted correlation between FD drop percentage at MSL and that at MAVEN is about 1.33 ± 0.14, i.e., an FD event seen on the surface of Mars by MSL with 10% drop magnitude corresponds to about 13.3 % drop magnitude of GCR protons with energies ≥ 100 MeV outside Mars’ atmosphere. The systematic difference between the magnitudes of the FDs within and outside the Martian atmosphere may be mostly attributed to the energy-dependent modulation of the GCR particles by both the heliospheric magnetic fields and the Martian atmosphere. 4 ref: :uo et al 2D!1 (F( 6submitted7 Ex-!anation o" the s/stemati+ di""eren+e between the am-!itude o" an FD in s-a+e and on the sur"a+e o" Mars (!ater is sma!!er&# (s the atmos-*ere slo s down particles, it ’shifts? the response weighting of the original G"Rs from lo -energy :"Rs to middle- and high-energy G"RsG meantime the *e!ios-*eri+ modu!ation of G"Rs is energ/-de-endent with lo -energy particles more deflected and their fluxes more suppressed by the increased magnetic fieldsG as a result, the Modulation of GCRs in space )(s on t*e sur"a+e o" Mars are a better pro@y of the modulation of *ig*er-energ/ G2's hich are less depressed by the enhanced heliospheric activities and therefore the magnitude of the same FD on the Martian sur"a+e is sma!!er than that outside t*e Martian atmos-*ere3 Modulation of GCRs on Mars 5 ref: :uo 2D!1 /:R-planet F :uo et al 2D!1 (F( 6submitted7.
