As will be apparent from the actions of the gunmen they were determined to kill as many people as possible, not only the soldiers who were dressed in uniform, but the civilian drivers who were in the process of making the deliveries, and a civilian security guard. [2] On Saturday 7 March 2009 members of 25 Field Squadron, Royal Engineers stationed at Masserene Barracks on the outskirts of Antrim were due to deploy to Afghanistan. Because there was a delay in their departure some of the soldiers decided to order pizzas from Dominos Pizzas in Antrim. It was a very common practice for soldiers stationed at Masserene Barracks to ring various fast food outlets in Antrim and place an order. This would be delivered by car to the front gate of the camp where the soldiers would collect their order and pay the driver.

Details The bombs were placed on trains plying on the western line of the suburban ("local") train network, which forms the backbone of the city's transport network. The first blast reportedly took place at 18:24 IST (12:54 UTC), and the explosions continued for approximately eleven minutes, until 18:35, during the after-work rush hour. All the bombs had been placed in the first-class "general" compartments (some compartments are reserved for women, called "ladies" compartments) of several trains running from Churchgate, the city-centre end of the western railway line, to the western suburbs of the city.
