English Translation: Dania Kassovsky Participants: Sarah Breitberg-Semel - Chief Editor of Studio Israeli Art Magazine Ohad Meromi - Artist and teacher at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem; Nahum Tevet's students at Bezalel Academy Introduction Ever since his piece Man with Camera was exhibited at the Sao Paulo Biennial, 1994 (Curator: Sarit Shapira), Nahum Tevet's work has entered into a new phase, surprising in its dimensions, beauty and intricacy. The new works are essentially a further development of the language of minimalism, characteristic of Tevet's art since the mid 1970s, intensifying his act of construction via the minimalist language in a way that negates its historic nature and challenges it. Nonetheless, they seem like a breakthrough due to their size, and the reduction of the shapes and colors incorporated in the simple construction (overlaying and juxtaposing). The work exhibited at the Museum of Art, Ein Harod (1996) and his most recent work at Dvir Gallery - pieces which filled up entire halls - emphasize Tevet's transition from constructing sculptures or installations to fabricating entire worlds, private cosmologies. Other works from the same series were exhibited at the Magasin 3 Kunsthall Stockholm (1996), the Lyon Biennale curated by Harald Szeemann (1997), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Copenhagen (1997), and in his one-person exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, Vienna (1997). Studio has chosen to mark the new phase in Nahum Tevet's work by joining him and his students at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in a conversation held at Dvir Gallery, Tel Aviv - the site of his new exhibition (A Page from a Catalogue, Feb.-March 1998).

Since elementary school, Yom HaShoah ceremonies in my private Jewish day school, looked and felt the same. I would sit in a room with peers and either listen to a Holocaust survivor share their story (many years it was the same survivor), be shown a documentary or student-made video, or both. Regardless of the structure, the content of these ceremonies always terrified me. I was uncomfortable reading about the Holocaust, seeing pictures, watching Holocaust-related films, and on multiple occasions even hoped that on the morning of our annual Yom HaShoah ceremony that I would not feel well enough to go to school. I still cannot accurately explain what possessed me senior year to sign up for March of the Living. However, during my interview with Monise Neumann, March of the Living director for the Los Angeles Delegation, my decision was made after she explained to me that she faced the same challenges as I did with Holocaust material.

But with a rich cultural past and creative community spanning its some 8,000-square-mile footprint, Israel has also become a hub for contemporary art—especially that which investigates its history, Israeli- Palestinian relations, and the limitations (and potential) of politically engaged art. Is it possible to understand a complex and layered contemporary art scene in just seven days? In a best-case scenario, one can scratch the surface— and maybe achieve a bit more. Over the course of a week this fall, courtesy of Artis’s week-long research trip in Israel, I explored the country’s myriad museums, galleries, alternative spaces, artists’ studios, and restaurants. Amid the political violence—often the main topic of discussion beyond art (one that admittedly, at times, made art-spectating feel trivial)—I came away with a familiarity with, and keen curiosity for, art in Israel. Below are my takeaways, centered around the art spaces, curators, and artists of its two largest and most vibrant cities, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
