We witnessed two former Popes, through whose Pontificates many of us had lived, celebrated by two Popes, one currently in office, one recently retired. The celebration was overwhelming with over 800,000 people present. People had waited for hours to be part of this celebration of two modern day saints. In his homily, Francis made the point that both of the new saints had work associated with the Second Vatican Council that brought the church into modern times. Saint John XXIII had convened the Council in 1962, opening the doors and windows of the church, allowing the mass to be celebrated in local languages, not just Latin. He encouraged dialogue among people of differing faiths, especially the Jewish people. Saint John Paul II helped hasten the end of the Cold War and bring an end to Communist rule in Eastern Europe. He also began World Youth Days and traveled extensively, sometimes being called the globetrotter. He also had great focus on the family. Since his death people have been advocating for the canonization of John Paul II. The testimonies of both lives testify to their strong belief in God, belief in God’s faithfulness and their steadfastness in times of turmoil. Besides the many pilgrims who came, leaders from more than 90 nations attended the canonization celebrations, asserting the importance of this event to the entire world. We all celebrate these canonizations with great pride and enthusiasm. God bless, Marcy Mission to Peru 2014 A mission trip to Peru has been planned for this year. It is coinciding with the dedication of a brick-and- mortar St. Patrick Chapel to replace the original chapel built by the missionaries of St. Patrick Parish in Wadsworth. The departure date is Friday, June 27 and the return date is Sunday, July 6. While the airfare cost is considerable, the cost to stay at the local parish is only $250 for the week. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not necessary. Smiles translate in any language! If you are interested and would like more information, please contact me at 773-763-0206 or by email at [email protected] at your earliest convenience. The people who have made this trip have found it life- changing. I think you will as well. Peace, Father Pat Page 2 St. Mary of the Woods — May 4, 2014 Third Sunday of Easter www.smow.org Parish Celebration of the Sacrament of Anointing “It’s just for old people.” “You can only receive it if you’re really sick with something like cancer.” “You get it right before you die.” If you, like these teens, think the Anointing of the Sick is just for the extremely old or the critically ill, or if you assume the only time you can receive it is at the moment of death, you aren’t alone. Most Catholics still think of the Sacrament that way. “I didn’t know anything about it before I received it,” says Bridget, a high school sophomore who was anointed while struggling with anorexia. “I thought it was for older people or people who were dying. I’d never seen a young person receive it before.” While it is true the Anointing of the Sick is one of the ways the church helps prepare us for death, it’s much more than that. It’s a celebration of Jesus’ promise that we will have life and have it abundantly. It’s the sign of Christ’s healing presence in the world. And, as Bridget shows us, it’s not just for the elderly. Anyone, regardless of age, can receive the Sacrament if his or her health is seriously impaired. It can also be administered before surgery and, contrary to many people’s belief, it can be received more than once if the original illness gets worse or if another serious sickness is diagnosed. People susceptible to illnesses, particularly due to advancing age, are encouraged to receive the Sacrament. On Sunday, May 18th, our 12 noon Mass will be a special Mass of Healing to include the celebration of the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. All of our sick and elderly parishioners will be particularly welcome at this Mass. By the sacred anointing and prayer of the priest, the whole church commends those who are sick to Christ. The sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gifts of strength, faith, peace, and courage, and his or her suffering is united with the suffering of Christ. Through this Sacrament, we, the Body of Christ, carry out Jesus’ mission of compassion and healing for the sick. While you may not have any reason to experience the Sacrament yourself, you may have elderly parents or grandparents or relatives who do. Bring them along to this special Mass of anointing! Also, check in with elderly or housebound neighbors and friends who might like to be present at this Mass to receive the Sacrament and who may have no means of transportation.
