Do not take away our little children. Therefore, your attribute of דײן הײליגע תורה אן גשריבן אז עס ,mercy must be very great קומט ר״ה זאל מען בלאזן מיט אשופר especially now with the sounding דאש איז אײן סימן אלע קנעכט אין of the shofar. For you have written א״י זאלן פרײא ארויס גײן פון זײערי in your holy toyre: “When Rosh הערין. פאטר דער בארמיגר זײנן מיר Hashanah comes, you will blow the אזו װיא דײנע קינדר גירעכינט דר shofar as a sign for all the slaves in בארעם זיך װיא אײן פאטר איבר זײני Erets Yisro’el to be free of their קינדר אויב חלילה מיר האבן מיט masters.”[3] Merciful Father, if you אונזרי ביטערי עבירות גורם גיװעזין consider us to be your children, אז מיר זײנען נאר גירעכינט װיא אײן קנעכט זאלין מיר דאך מיט דעם קול ,have mercy upon us, like a father פון שופר ארויס פרײא פון דעם משפט ,upon your children. If, however אלע אונזרע זינד זאלסטו אװעק בלאזן ,we have, through our bitter sins מיט דעם קול פון שופר אונ מיט דעם acted in such a way as to be װאס מיר טוען נײן מאל שופר בלאזן considered mere slaves, may your זאל אונז בײא שטײן בײא דעם משפט judgment set us free with the דר זכות פון די פיר אמהות אונ דר sound of the shofar. Blow away all זכות פון די דרײא אבות אונ זכות פון of our sins with the blowing of the משה ואהרן דען זײ זײנען אויך נײן. shofar.     1 CHAPTER Introducing Tkhines The Seyder Tkhines,1 which first appeared in print in Amsterdam in 1648, is a landmark in the history of women. It represents an age of re- ligious, sexual, linguistic, and literary revolution within the Jewish com- munity across Europe, an age when mysticism pervaded mainstream2 Judaism. Yet this exceptional episode, along with its literature, has dis- appeared from the Jewish collective memory. Jews of this period be- lieved themselves to be on the verge of a Messianic redemption that called for spiritual regeneration, heartfelt prayer, and repentance by the entire community, women as well as men. Each catastrophe ex- perienced by the community, and these were many and cataclysmic, was seen as an affirmation of this belief. The urgency to get the com- munity’s “house in order”necessitated an unprecedented reform in the religious and cultural participation of women who traditionally had not played an essential role in communal prayer or learning in Ortho- dox Judaism. A new vernacular prayer literature for, and sometimes by,women was prolifically printed and widely circulated by a dynamic, pan-European Yiddish printing industry. These prayers, and in partic- ular those entitled tkhines,are the subject of this book.Jewish women today who are seeking a precedent for women’s prayer need look no further. 3 Copyright © 2004. Whereas the topic was practically non-existent two decades ago, at the last World Congress of Jewish Studies, the “Olympics” of Jewish scholarship, held in Jerusalem in August 2013, various panels were dedicated to this burgeoning field.
