  • Cigarette Company Paid for Lung Cancer Study - New York Times
Cigarette Company Paid for Lung Cancer Study - New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/26/health/research/26lung.html?_r=1&sq=ct%20scans%20... March 26, 2008 Cigarette Company Paid for Lung Cancer Study By GARDINER HARRIS In October 2006, Dr. Claudia Henschke of Weill Cornell Medical College jolted the cancer world with a study saying that 80 percent of lung cancer deaths could be prevented through widespread use of CT scans. Small print at the end of the study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, noted that it had been financed in part by a little-known charity called the Foundation for Lung Cancer: Early Detection, Prevention & Treatment. A review of tax records by The New York Times shows that the foundation was underwritten almost entirely by $3.6 million in grants from the parent company of the Liggett Group, maker of Liggett Select, Eve, Grand Prix, Quest and Pyramid cigarette brands. The foundation got four grants from the Vector Group, Liggett’s parent, from 2000 to 2003. Dr. Jeffrey M. Drazen, editor in chief of the medical journal, said he was surprised. “In the seven years that I’ve been here, we have never knowingly published anything supported by” a cigarette maker, Dr. Drazen said. An increasing number of universities do not accept grants from cigarette makers, and a growing awareness of the influence that companies can have over research outcomes, even when donations are at arm’s length, has led nearly all medical journals and associations to demand that researchers accurately disclose financing sources.

  • The Acrylamide Content of Smokeless Tobacco Products Kevin Mcadam1*, Harriet Kimpton1, Carl Vas1, David Rushforth1, Andrew Porter2 and Brad Rodu3
McAdam et al. Chemistry Central Journal (2015) 9:56 DOI 10.1186/s13065-015-0132-1 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access The acrylamide content of smokeless tobacco products Kevin McAdam1*, Harriet Kimpton1, Carl Vas1, David Rushforth1, Andrew Porter2 and Brad Rodu3 Abstract Background: There is considerable interest from a regulatory and public health perspective in harmful and poten- tially harmful constituents in tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco products (STPs). A wide range of com- mercial STPs from the US and Sweden, representing 80–90 % of the 2010 market share for all the major STP categories in these two countries, were analysed for the IARC Group 2A carcinogen acrylamide. These STPs comprised the follow- ing styles: Swedish loose and portion snus, US snus, chewing tobacco, moist snuff, dry snuff, soft pellet, hard pellet and plug. Results: Acrylamide was detected in all the products tested and quantified in all but one product. Concentrations ranged from 62 to 666 ng/g wet weight basis (WWB). The average levels of acrylamide (WWB) by type of STP were not significantly different (p > 0.05) except for US snus which had, on average, greater levels but with a very wide range of individual levels according to the manufacturer. Acrylamide levels in STPs were significantly and positively correlated with pH, but not with levels of either reducing sugars or ammonia nitrogen. Levels of acrylamide increased by sixfold or more (on a dry weight basis) during manufacture of a snus sample and then decreased during subsequent storage for up to 22 weeks. Acrylamide generation in tobacco generally appears to occur at lower temperatures, but longer time scales than found with food production.

  • Tobacco, E-Cigarettes and Alternative Products
Tobacco, E-Cigarettes and Alternative Products: Product Guide FOR PEDIATRIC PROVIDERS Although youth use of traditional cigarettes has declined in New York City (NYC), youth have turned to other products, including cigars, smokeless tobacco, and electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). These products are often flavored (such as with menthol) and almost always contain nicotine. Flavors are concerning because they can mask the harshness of tobacco, appeal to kids, and are often directly marketed to teens and preteens. NICOTINE can change the chemistry of the adolescent brain. It may affect learning ability and worsen memory and concentration. Youth are particularly vulnerable to nicotine dependence, which can occur even with occasional use. Nicotine may also affect the way the adolescent brain processes other drugs, like alcohol, cannabis and cocaine. The following is a list of selected products with their negative health effects to help you better counsel and guide your patients and their families. 2 TOBACCO: Smokeless Tobacco THE FACTS • Smokeless tobacco is not burned or smoked but always contains nicotine.* V It includes tobacco that can be sucked, chewed, spit or swallowed, depending on the product. • Standardized Tobacco Assessment for Retail Settings (STARS) Training for Data Collectors
Standardized Tobacco Assessment for Retail Settings (STARS) Training for data collectors Acknowledgement: This presentation is based on materials developed by the Stanford Prevention Research Center for the California Tobacco Control Program (CTCP). Thanks are due to CTCP and the Tobacco Control Evaluation Center for sharing photos and training materials for STARS. Objectives for data collectors • Recognize key product categories and brands • Learn key concepts: • Tobacco flavors • Store types • Advertisements • Product placement • Price promotions • How to record price of product Supplies • Copies of survey • Pocket guide • Pen • Hard writing surface (e.g. notebook, clipboard) • Optional: list of stores to visit, map of area STARS • 20 questions, ≈10 minutes • Tasks include assessing the following: • Types of tobacco products • Outside advertisements • Store type • Store qualities (e.g., pharmacy, alcohol sold) • Product placement • Interior tobacco ad placement • Price promotions • Prices for three tobacco products Let’s begin… 1 & 2. Date and Coder Name/ID • Record date and start/end times of survey • Record data collector (coder) name or ID 3 & 4. Store Name and Address • If stores are not assigned then record the name and address of the store • If you are visiting assigned stores and the store name and address match the assigned name and address then simply check the boxes • If the name or address does not match then record the actual name or address 5. Can you survey this store? • Yes answer is most common • If No, select the option
