These include celebrating European Geoparks Week; the highly successful 12th European Geoparks Conference and progress in discussions between the Global Geoparks Network and UNESCO to develop a UNESCO Global Geoparks Initiative. The inclusion of articles by six new members, Azores Geopark (Portugal); Karavanke/Karawanken Geopark (Slovenia & Austria); Idrija Geopark European Geoparks (Slovenia); Hondsrug Geopark (Netherlands); Sesia-Val Grande Geopark EDITORIAL (Italy); Kula Geopark (Turkey) reflects the expansion of the EGN to 58 Network Magazine members. The 12th European Geoparks Conference entitled “Geoparks an innovative Issue No 11 / 2014 approach to raise public awareness about geohazards, climate change and sustainable use of our natural resources” was hosted by The National Park Published by: of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni - Geopark between 4-7 September Natural History Museum of the Lesvos PARKS 2013. The conference was attended by 400 delegates from 41 countries Petrified Forest on behalf of the European and more than 150 short articles are published in the Conference Geoparks Network Proceedings’ E.Book. Selected articles were published in the Rendiconti Online della Società Geologica Italiana. The conference concluded with two Executive editor: Nickolas Zouros days of field excursions providing a choice of four venues.

Czech Journal of Tourism, 2(2), 126-142, DOI: 10.2478/cjot-2013-0007. Abstract The Azores archipelago is distinguished by its unique natural beauty and marine setting. Thanks to its volcanic ori- gin, the region has a very rich and remarkable geodiversity that includes a diversity of landscapes with innumerable craters, volcanic lakes, fumaroles, hot springs, volcanic caves, marine fossil deposits and thermal water springs. The recognition of this valuable geological heritage came with the recent integration of the Azores Geopark into the European and Global Geopark Networks. The pressure that the increasing development of tourism have been exerting on these geological sites for the last years, and the need to create alternative forms of tourism, which contribute towards the socio-economic development in rural areas, have highlighted the importance of geotourism as a tool to promote and preserve the geological heritage of the Azores. Geotourism has turned to be an important instrument of environmental aware- ness through the local and foreign people. Os Geoparques apresentam características distintas e prova disso mesmo é que toda a extensão terreste do arquipélago dos Açores está integrada no Geoparque Açores da UNESCO. Criado em 2013 é parte integrante da UNESCO desde 2015. O Geoparque Açores é bastante recente e as mudanças provenientes do boom recente do turismo apressam a que o arquipélago esteja preparado para o crescimento do turismo, mas também obriga a garantir a melhor qualidade ambiental possível, de forma a ajudar a que os impactes positivos do turismo se oponham aos negativos.
