Helions Bumpstead Village Magazine

June 2021 Editorial…

The weather has not been particularly kind to us recently with the coldest April for 60 years followed by a rainy May, which is on track to be the wettest May since records began. However there was a glimpse of sun last week, causing the magnificent rainbow, shown on the front cover, viewed from Drapers Green, and seeming to start in the centre of the village. We are delighted to be returning to a printed edition of the magazine this month, courtesy of the print room at Braintree Council. It just wasn’t the same viewing it on a screen! It is also very pleasing to have some activities to tell you about as restrictions are gradually lifted and we are able to make plans once again. Clubs are starting again cautiously in the village hall with a new Pilates class on Monday mornings, Table Tennis on Thursday evenings and monthly Coffee Mornings restarting from Tuesday 1st June. Inside you will also find details of various events in the village: Pub Fridays at the Three Horseshoes; a Village Walk ending at the pub in time for lunch on Saturday 26th June; a Jazz Evening raising money for charity on 10th July; and a Forest Roots music event on 23rd July. Planning is also well under way for the Summer Fete on Saturday 4th September. This is always quite a feat of organisation, so thank you to Bill and Jane Slade for volunteering to coordinate efforts. Please do contact them if you are able to help in any way - contact details inside.

Since the last issue of the magazine we have been very pleased to welcome Roy Etheridge as a new member of the Parish Council. Roy has been a councillor previously so we know we will benefit from his experience and enthusiasm.

We are very sorry to be saying goodbye to our clerk, Cathy Carlisle, who has served us extremely well for the last 4 and a half years. We will really miss her and want to thank her very much for her help and support over the years. We have appointed a new Parish Clerk, Luke Brown and we look forward to welcoming him soon.

In years gone by, new arrivals to the village were contacted by a village representative, given a personal welcome and introduction to the village and provided with a small information pack. Even before the pandemic this system had pretty much ceased and we would really like to get it up and running again. We have updated the introductory information pack ready to be handed out but, of course, we don’t always know when someone new moves into the village. To help us in this we ask that any resident who is aware of a new neighbour moving in lets us know (either by contacting one of the councillors or e-mailing the clerk at [email protected]) so that we can make contact and help ensure that everyone gets a proper welcome to the village. If you are reading this and are, yourself, new to the village, please do get in touch.

I mention in the Annual Parish Report, which you will find included with this issue of the magazine, that during the last year we have been in contact with the local clinical commissioning groups for our area to express villagers’ concerns about the GP services in Haverhill. Now that we are hopefully coming out of the worst of the pandemic we are relaunching our efforts on this front. As a first step, we have made contact with the Chairs of the local councils in Haverhill and surrounding villages to suggest that we all work together in pushing for an improved service, starting with the re-opening of the surgery.

We are lucky that levels of crime are relatively low in our part of the world but, of course, criminal activity does take place. We want to do all we can to help reduce crime and keep our property safe. We don’t currently have a Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator for the village and appointing one would be a positive step in helping to prevent crime in our area. If anyone is interested in volunteering to taking on this very worthwhile role then please do get in contact with us. We can all help to reduce crime by staying alert and reporting any suspicious activity immediately. As well as informing the police where appropriate, please also let the clerk know, who will ensure that relevant information is distributed to the rest of the village.

As always please do get in contact with the Clerk or with any of the Councillors if there is anything you think the Parish Council can help you with. All our details are to be found in the magazine or on the website https://helionsbumpsteadparishcouncil.gov.uk/

HELIONS BUMPSTEAD VILLAGE HALL As I write this report COVID 19 restrictions are about to be lifted on, amongst others, indoor entertainment and sports and signs are that we will be re-opening for table tennis and karate with most other regular bookings waiting until Autumn before re-starting. We hope to hold our Annual General Meeting on 21st June 2021 in the Main Hall subject to the final ending of restrictions. I hope to see you there - time will be announced nearer the day. Planning for the fete to be held on 4th September 2021 is going ahead and we hope to have some of the usual stalls, a flower show in the Hall, a dog show and performances by local musicians and artists. Jane and Bill Slade have volunteered to be lead volunteers and Jenny Beeching will arrange entertainment but they will need help from as many volunteers as possible to arrange the various activities. This is an opportunity for newcomers to the village to get involved and meet people and for others who would like to join in to do their bit. So please get in touch if you can help – please don’t wait to be asked – as we want to get as many people involved as possible rather than relying on the same group of people to arrange things. In Memory of Paul Pearce Paul was born in the mid-50’s at the Rosie in Cambridge. He was the only son of an only son. He lived in Abington until 1967 when the family moved to Linton. Apprenticed as a plumber he had his own business as a plumbing & heating engineer. Paul was a very good neighbour, especially in an emergency, and many people in the village valued his support. He was a good neighbour to the Three Horseshoes, contributing to the successful refurbishment until he became ill with cancer last year. He liked travel, abroad as far as New Zealand, and in the UK, for holidays and weekend breaks. Paul wanted to get to the Ice Hotel in Iceland but Covid lockdown intervened. Paul and Lynda went all over , Ireland and Wales, but mostly to Yorkshire where Paul had a lease share in two racehorses. Paul liked to have a bet on the races and on the football results, but Paul always said ‘it’s only lent’ when he didn’t win. Paul liked most sports, Cambridge United and Manchester United were his teams. For bowling, both indoor and out, Paul was one of the first members of the Haverhill Indoor Bowls club and bowled with his Mother and Father back in the beginning. He and Lynda went all over Essex playing outdoor bowls with Birdbrook Bowls Club, and Paul was often found serving behind the bar at both the indoor and outdoor bowls club. Paul also enjoyed music and spent dark evenings in the winter playing his extensive record collection. He remembered the bands that most of us have long forgotten since the 60s! He will be missed. Village Coffee Morning Sadly our monthly coffee mornings were cancelled early last year However, Philippa and Simon Walker kindly held several ‘virtual’ coffee mornings via ZOOM and also hosted some lovely ‘socially distanced’ coffee mornings in their garden. During the winter, coffee and chat has mostly been on Zoom. Huge thanks to Philippa and Simon for organising and hosting us during this last awful year. You helped to keep us sane (relatively!). In the last magazine we prayed for an effective vaccine very soon and we got just what we wanted! As a result of the gradual return to more ordinary living we hope to resume our coffee mornings at the Village Hall. The hall is large so there should be plenty of room for us to continue to be cautious but it will be wonderful to actually have people together again. It would be sensible for us to continue to wear a face covering indoors. As before, we will meet between 10.30 and 12.00 on the first Tuesday of each month with kind people volunteering to prepare the drinks and to make a cake from time to time.. Coffee/Tea and a piece of cake or a biscuit 50p as before.

So the dates are: June 1st July 6th August 3rd September 7th I look forward to seeing you then.

It has been a busy tme in the Three Horseshoes over the last few months. Most importantly, is the contributon of volunteers to enable the regular opening of the pub on a Friday evening, weather permitng. The prospect of Natonal Volunteer Week (frst week of June) reminds us of the crucial part played by so many volunteers in the work of communites across Britain and in our community-owned pub. TENANCY: There have been three strong applicatons and other expressions of interest in the last month, with confdence in hospitality returning at last. As ever, our purpose is to identfy the candidates who will make a commercial success of the business within the context of our community guidelines. Feedback on the premises has been consistently positve, partcularly on the potental of the extensive outdoor space. ON SITE DEVELOPMENTS: Our new heatng oil tank has been delivered and connected to the boiler by local heatng engineer Mark Sparkes. Thanks also to Steve Kiddy who was on site to place the tank itself in positon. Partcular thanks to the Essex County Council for the emergency CIF grant which met the cost of the tank at short notce. Within this context the Society would like to thank David Finch, leader of Essex Council, who has now retred. His support, both material and moral, for our community venture has been constant and greatly appreciated. The pato umbrella was installed just in tme for the end of the most recent full lockdown. Aztec Umbrellas did a wonderful job and produced a custom-built item which fts the pato perfectly. Richard benefted greatly from the opportunity to dig the hole into which landscaper Darrell inserted the umbrella sleeve in a cubic metre of concrete. It seems secure thus far! A large supply of kitchen equipment has been donated to the Society by the Tata Steel following the closure of their UK head ofce in London. The pub sign is now more secure than ever and recently withstood gale force winds, thanks to the strengthening of the welds by our expert neighbour Kevin. Thanks also to Richard Hatch who provided the scafolding once again and whose role in the restoraton of the sign has been crucial. The garden needs constant atenton and thanks to those that come along spontaneously to keep things under control. We now have have herb and vegetable beds to plant and will aim to get the compostng scheme underway soon. RECENT OPENINGS: The main recent event was the frst post lockdown Pub Quiz on 22 May Questons posed in the pub quiz were, with hindsight, very challenging…congratulatons to those who rose more or less successfully to the challenge! A good tme was had by all nonetheless and this was the frst tme that we have been able to use the inside space this year. The interior has now been enhanced by the mountng of old photographs including those metculously remastered and annotated by Colin Tyler, for which many thanks. Thanks also to Steve, Damian, Peter and Val, Jonathan and Emma and Emily for assistng with table service during covid-compliant openings in recent weeks. The pub will contnue to be open for drinks early evening on most Friday evenings, details to be circulated in the Society's newsleters and pinned on the notceboard outside the pub . FORTHCOMING EVENTS AND ACTIVITY IN AN AROUND THE THREE HORSESHOES •VILLAGE WALK to be led by Helen Armes on Saturday 26th June to fnish at lunchtme at the Three Horseshoes where refreshment will be provided. •PUB FRIDAYS regular opening of the pub for drinks most Friday evenings (early evening) untl further notce. Please sign in on arrival and comply with the prevailing Covid secure arrangements. •REFILL BARN - ditch the plastc with eco larder essentals in car park every other Wednesday between 11-12. •POST OFFICE in the pub car park every Thursday. •CHARITY EVENT in support of the RAF Associaton organised by Damian Harris on the 10 July. SAD FAREWELL We were all saddened that Paul Pearce had passed away recently and honoured to toast Paul, joined by his partner Lynda when the pub frst opened afer lockdown on 17th April. Paul was a key fgure within the village, always on hand in an emergency and always good company in the pub – his dartboard will be kept in safe keeping for more social (and compettve) tmes. Further sad news of the recent passing of Les Anderson who with his wife Sue were the frst owners of the Three Horseshoes following Greene King's decision to sell the business. Longer-term residents in the village will have happy memories of the tme when he and Sue were behind the bar. Our thoughts are with Sue and family. We’d like to thank all the residents of Helions Bumpstead who’ve taken advantage of the new fibre optic cable we’ve brought to the village. To celebrate the success of our new fibre we’re offering free activation, worth £175, to anyone signing up for a two year subscription. Prices start at just £29 a month and come with unlimited usage...... and the great news keeps coming - we’ll give you a free month for every new person or business you introduce who then goes on to become a subscriber. Forest Roots Village Choir - Singing For Fun The next Forest Roots event will be held in the Rehearsals will be on Sunday afternoons in village hall on Friday 23rd July with Acoustica the village hall, most likely starting Sunday and local guests. Acoustica was the very first 4th July. The choir is open to anyone and band we had at Forest Roots and everyone really you don’t have to worry whether or not you enjoyed that evening so I am really happy they think you can sing! have agreed to come back.

For further details please contact Jenny Beeching at [email protected] HELIONS WILDLIFE REPORT We’ve had a very cold Spring and this has affected our wildlife (and us!). Fieldfare have returned to Scandinavia and a large flock of c150 birds was seen around the village getting ready to make the difficult journey back north. Golden Plover have not been seen so much with only a small number of birds around. Because of the cold weather only a few warblers have arrived back from Africa. Chiffchaffs have been singing and a few blackcaps – but not many. Spotted flycatchers normally spend summer here in the village but have not been seen yet. Swallows have also been few in number and a single swift the day before I wrote this report on 11th May. Yellowhammers and Skylarks are looking for nests up on Boblow Hill – the yellowhammers look great in their bright yellow plumage. A word about Buzzards. Last year they disrupted a number of people walking and running near Bumpstead Hall. The buzzards have a nest nearby and when the chicks were young, the parents were “dive bombing” runners in particular as they passed by. The parents are back this year and currently are flying away when people come near. If there are chicks in the nest soon, they will start dive bombing again. Please try and be patient with them despite the provocation! Martin Catchesides [email protected], 07887 931004, 01440 730422

The 2022 calendar competition run by Friends of Haverhill Library is open to all, so we hope you will all send in entries. The theme is: Scenes in and around Haverhill. So what are we looking for? Photos for the calendar will ideally cover all seasons; be pictures that you will want to enjoy looking at for a whole month; and will need to be ‘landscape’ in orientation. Obviously they will need to be high enough resolution to print crisply at A4 size, so the file will need to be minimum 2Mb. Send your photo entries (max 4 per person) to: [email protected] Closing date 4th October 2021 and the calendar will be on sale early November, priced around £7. www.suffolklibraries.co.uk/whats-on/scenes-in-and-around-haverhill-calendar-competition

Why so serious? As we continue to move out of lockdown, understandably, the whole world is seeking happiness. Happiness is a good thing to pursue, but like a butterfly, often when we chase it, it flies away. So how do we find happiness? The Bible shows us how both laughter and joy lead to an enriched life. Where laughter and joy are, so also there will be happiness. And the Bible reminds us that “a cheerful heart is good medicine” (Proverbs 17:22). Let’s not take ourselves too seriously. We need to laugh at situations – and ourselves. Laughter is like an internal workout. It exercises our spirit and helps keep our hearts and minds healthy. (By the way, my parents used to say “laugh with people, not at people.” That was good advice!) And what about joy? What is it? Joy runs deep and is less transient than just happiness. Joy goes beyond simply a pleasing emotion – joy brings peace, strength and light. Joy goes right down to the heart of our being. The joy of the Lord is your strength. (Nehemiah 8:10) Laughter, happiness and joy. These might sound like simple things, but don’t underestimate their power to bring life and light to all around you. These qualities should be hallmarks of ours, particularly if we are people of faith. No doubt Jesus laughed a lot, and happiness and joy were at the heart of how he lived. Jesus knew great sorrow and great pain, but I often think that if we were to meet him in the flesh, part of what we would remember most would be his sense of fun and laughter. I like that. Keep smiling! Blessings, Jonathan

Helions Mutual Support Network (HMSN)

The Village Support Network is STILL there!!

The established network of helpers was amended and expanded as we entered the first lockdown. Several of the ‘old’ helpers are just that…over 70! But, thankfully the Parish Council and others created a list of around 28 amazing younger volunteers, called HELIONS HELPING HANDS. They are still ready and willing to help…..and they certainly have HELPED many of us!

Life has been pretty tough for us all this year and for some it has been especially difficult but the Helions community has been and still is there to support us when we need it.

Shopping has been done, prescriptions collected, many telephone calls made to ensure people are OK and I’m sure people have been helped in numerous other ways too.

A huge THANK YOU to each of our wonderful Village Helpers. What would we do without you?

If you need assistance don’t hesitate to contact one of us and we will ask one of the fantastic volunteers to help you:

Take care and keep safe and well Jesus Paid it All Helions Bumpstead Gospel Hall

I owed a debt I could not pay, He paid a debt He did not owe!

In the Bible, Matthew in his gospel chapter 18 records how Simon Peter interrupted Jesus, requesting clarification on a point relating to forgiveness. Jesus, to clarify the point in question told the following story: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain King who wanted to settle some accounts with his servants. One of his servants owed Him ten thousand talents, an unpayable debt. Since the servant couldn’t ever hope to repay the debt, his master ordered him and his family to be sold into slavery. The servant fell on his knees and implored his master “have patience with me and I will pay all the debt”. His master was moved with pity and forgave the servant, cancelling the debt. However, that same servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred pence. Seizing him by the throat he said “pay me what you owe!”. That fellow servant fell on his knees, “Have patience with me and I will pay you all the debt” The servant would not listen and cast his fellow servant into prison until he could pay all. When the King became acquainted with the facts of the case he took the appropriate action and called the servant saying “you wicked servant, I forgave all your debt because you pleaded with me. Shouldn’t you have had compassion on your fellow servant as I had pity on you?” His master was terribly angry and delivered him to the tormentors until he should pay what was due. Jesus said, “this is what My Heavenly Father will do to every one of you if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.” The story reminds us of the cost and the importance of God’s forgiveness. In the parable, the King (God) has a servant who has more debt than they can ever repay – a picture of you and me. God created us in His image (Genesis 1.v.27) and for His glory, (Isaiah 43.v.7) but we have sinned against God’s law. However, when Adam, the first created man, sinned, his sin separated him from God and consequently us from God, too. (Isaiah 59.v.2) God’s law states that we should love the Lord our God with all our heart...... and our neighbour as ourselves. (Luke 10.v.27) We are in debt to Him. The Bible in Ephesians 2 Verse 8 reads that it is ‘By grace we are saved, through faith, not of ourselves, it is the gift of God’ It is through faith in Jesus Christ, the only One qualified to pay the debt for us. Only He could love God with all His heart, soul, mind, and strength, and His neighbour as Himself. He obeyed God perfectly, something that we can never do. Moreover, as the Son of God, only He was able to endure the terrible crushing burden of God’s fierce anger against sin on the cross. He is also qualified to pay the debt because He is a perfectly and completely sinless man. Only as a man was Christ able to suffer, able to die and bear the punishment for our sin, to pay the price which God required – the shedding of blood which is the full payment for sin (Hebrews 9.v.22). Again – it is only through faith in Him that we are saved. He paid the debt in full and is the only basis by which we can be forgiven by God. Jesus, in His reply to Simon Peter’s question applied the message. We should forgive our brother/neighbour with all our heart. Loving our neighbour as ourselves means that we are willing to respect, honour and forgive them when they offend us. So many disputes, wars, and quarrels can be avoided when we love our neighbour as we love ourselves!

We were very pleased that most of the daffodils planted in the autumn struck and lovely to see them emerge as Spring “sprung” – there are plans to increase planting in the autumn. As villagers will I hope have seen, thanks to a few dedicated volunteers, we have planted a number of trees that hopefully at the time of writing will begin to bear blossom – these include crab apple, cherry & plum that are sure to provide a pleasing backdrop. My thanks also to Sturmer Nurseries for their guidance in helping with varieties and Richard Hatch for supplying water in the dry spell when we planted & Malcolm for the chippings. As well as light pruning and weeding, the next major task is to re-establish the rear of the centre of the border that is still ivy infested. With the restrictions being lifted soon, it would be great to see villagers who would like to help, an hour or so makes all the difference. Please watch out for communication via village email. Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) Chairman Peter Sanders commented: "This is a major cause for celebration and something we have long argued for. The Government finally seems to have recognised that if we are serious about tackling climate change, the environmental damage caused by the aviation sector can no longer be ignored." In the wake of the Government's announcement, campaign groups at the eight major UK airports currently threatened by expansion, have written to Transport Secretary Grant Shapps and Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick calling for an immediate moratorium on airport expansion on climate change grounds. SSE has also sent a further submission to the Planning Inspectors who presided over the recent Stansted Public Inquiry, highlighting this important shift in Government policy and arguing that it would be wholly inconsistent with this policy to approve further expansion of Stansted. At this stage there is still no indication of when Inspectors will announce their decision on the Stansted Public Inquiry, or what that decision will be.

The Draft Cycling Strategy sets out how it will encourage more people to take up cycling and help improve the cycle network in both urban and rural areas. Please tell BDC what you think. This is not just the Council’s strategy, but your strategy too. Visit: www.braintree.gov.uk/cyclingstrategy Your Planet Needs You! - Draft Climate Change Strategy The climate crisis is one of the most significant issues to face our society, our environment and the planet. We have seen a rapid global rise in greenhouse gas emissions over the last 100 years and a trend towards increasing global average temperatures over the last century. This is very likely to cause continued changes in weather patterns, rising sea levels and frequency of extreme weather events. BDC declared a Climate Change Emergency in July 2019 and announced a target to be carbon neutral as a Council as far as practical by 2030, as well as supporting communities to reduce the impacts of climate change across the district. BDC has earmarked half a million pounds for climate change initiatives in its budget for 2021/22. We need to work together to make a difference and we welcome your input. Have your say. PFCC for Essex Roger Hirst has been re-elected as Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex with a promise to continue working to stop crime from happening and to keep people safe from fire and hazard. He has also pledged to prevent drug related violence and support victims of domestic abuse with a focus on preventing it from happening in the first place. Roger received more than half of the first preference votes. The countywide turnout was 32.47%. Crime in the District I have been looking at the types of recent crime across the district in the last couple of weeks. They are varied, such as vehicle, bicycle, catalytic converter (whilst parked on the owners’ drive) and parcel theft. Also a dog has killed one lamb and injured another on farmland. However, this one got my attention. It took place in South St, Braintree on 6th May at 13.35pm: “Suspects unidentified have knocked on the victims front door to see if he was in, the victim heard the knock but did not answer. The suspects then went around the back of the victims property and tried to gain entry by using an unknown tool on the kitchen window which has caused damage. The suspects were then disturbed by the victim and left the scene by jumping over the victims side gate”. Operation Trespass: Ending Cuckooing Across Essex There is concern for vulnerable people in Essex who are being targeting by County Lines drug gangs who take over their homes and use them as a base for drug dealing. ‘Cuckooing’ usually starts with a gang member manipulating a vulnerable person to gain access to their property and then gang members move in. Victims find themselves trapped, threatened by the gang and unable to see a way out. In some cases, they have abandoned their homes entirely and ended up living on the streets. have provided training to more than 450 police and partner agency employees to recognise the signs. They have launched Operation Trespass to help the public spot the signs and look out for their neighbours. With best wishes to all, Cllr. Diana Garrod District Councillor - Bumpstead Ward

These varied routes provide a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the variety of wildflowers growing in field margins, hedgerows, verges, churchyards and village greens. After this season’s chilly start, the warmer days have encouraged an abundance of flowers to provide essential nectar and pollen to support visiting pollinators. With the increasing concern about the alarming reduction in insect numbers many of those caring for green spaces have adopted the ‘NO MOW IN MAY’ approach to grass maintenance, where the uncut grassy places can support a surprisingly large number of different native species. Their flowers add variety to these areas and the bees benefit as well! Wayside plants such as Stinging Nettles, Goosegrass (the long, hairy plant that sticks to your socks) and Cow Parsley thrive alongside lanes and tracks. Cow parsley, with its splay of tiny white flowers, can grow as high as a person. A touch of pink is often added by the flowers of Red Campion, also known as Bachelor’s Buttons as it might have been worn as a buttonhole by unmarried men. Common bright yellow flowers include Dandelions and the shiny golden petals of a great variety of Buttercups. The tall Ox-eye Daisy is often present where wildflower mixtures have been sown. In recent years these have become a common sight beside new roadways. The types of wild flower I have listed can be seen and enjoyed almost everywhere in the Hundred Parishes. There are many more varieties to be seen and occasionally something MAN ABOUT quite rare. For smart phone users there are apps to help with identification, but we do not THE HOUSE have to be experts to appreciate and enjoy nature’s abundance.
