GLASG 1)W. l!T PREFATORY NOTE AFTER the publication of the Records of the Clan ancl Narne of Fergiisson, Ferguson, and Fergus in 1895, the Editors received a number of communications from persons of the name resident in Canada, the United States, and elsewhere. There also reached them a considerable amount of additional information, illustrating the earlier history of the Clan, and indicating the common origin of various families. The discovery of papers at Pitfour a year after the book came out was followed by the appearance of His Grace the Duke of Atholl's Chronicles of the Fa1nilies of .Atholl and Tulliebardine, which gives many interesting particulars about the Olan in Athole, while the Editors have been placed in communication with the representa tives of other families, who had been unaware of, or omitted to contribute to the original volume. Ultimately in the spring of 1898 the Clan Fergusson Society authorised the preparation and publication of the present supplemen tary volume. The Editors have, as on the previous occasion, en deavoured to supply notices of the families dealt with from the pen of a member of the particular family.

Clan Chisholm Society Great War Centenary Project “every clansman remembered” Sketches from the Trenches: Lt. MW Willliams, 17Bn. Welsh Regiment Roll of Honour Volume 111 France August 1914 – April 1917 Clan Chisholm Society Roll of Honour Vol III France August 1914-April 1917 Page 1 Issue 1 Foreword Clan Chisholm Society. Introduction to WW1 Memorial volumes. My great aunt Miss Mairi Chisholm of Chisholm was naturally legendary in the family as I was growing up. A copy of 'The Cellar House at Pervyse' was to be found in our sitting room and often referred to. We were proud of her war-time reputation and of the many medals she had been awarded due to her work in WW1. She was of course also a loving aunt to my father, Chief Alastair. Less well known was her beloved brother Uilean Hamish McUistean, my grandfather, who served during World War I in Palestine and Egypt. Uilean had resigned his position in the Trinidad Constabulary in 1915 and enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant with the British West India Regiment. Photograph albums and other memorabilia from his time in Palestine reminded us of his war service. World War One therefore, although distant in time, was a current topic of conversation within the family during my childhood and beyond. The scale of the 1914 - 1918 war and the huge loss of life was well known and the topic was and is covered in the educational curricu- lum in Britain. Both Mairi and Uilean returned to their families, so many did not. Travelling through Belgium for the unveiling of a statue in Ypres to honour Elsie Knocker and Mairi's work and attending the nightly ceremony at the Menin Gate brought home to me even more so the sacrifice made by so many.

tfaU. 2*2. i m HE MOR CTORY. * i e^ % / X BLACKS MORAYSHIRE DIRECTORY, INCLUDING THE UPPER DISTRICTOF BANFFSHIRE. 1863^ ELGIN : PRINTED AND PUBLISHED BY JAMES BLACK, ELGIN COURANT OFFICE. SOLD BY THE AGENTS FOR THE COURANT; AND BY ALL BOOKSELLERS. : ELGIN PRINTED AT THE COURANT OFFICE, PREFACE, Thu ''Morayshire Directory" is issued in the hope that it will be found satisfactorily comprehensive and reliably accurate, The greatest possible care has been taken in verifying every particular contained in it ; but, where names and details are so numerous, absolute accuracy is almost impossible. A few changes have taken place since the first sheets were printed, but, so far as is known, they are unimportant, It is believed the Directory now issued may be fully depended upon as a Book of Reference, and a Guide for the County of Moray and the Upper District of Banffshire, Giving names and information for each town arid parish so fully, which has never before been attempted in a Directory for any County in the JTorth of Scotland, has enlarged the present work to a size far beyond anticipation, and has involved much expense, labour, and loss of time. It is hoped, however, that the completeness and accuracy of the Book, on which its value depends, will explain and atone for a little delay in its appearance. It has become so large that it could not be sold at the figure first mentioned without loss of money to a large extent, The price has therefore been fixed at Two and Sixpence, in order, if possible, to cover outlays, Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2010 with funding from National Library of Scotland http://www.archive.org/details/blacksmorayshire1863dire INDEX.

As well as families, the beach is also popular with a variety of water sports enthusiasts, including sailors, windsurfers and kite surfers. During high and low tides the approximate distance to the water’s edge can vary from 0–160 metres. The beach slopes gently towards the water. For local tide information see: http://easytide.ukho.gov.uk/EasyTide/ Site details Local authority Highland Council Year of designation 1999 Water sampling location NH 88227 57117 Bathing water ID UKS7616037 Catchment description The catchment draining into the Nairn (Central) bathing water extends to 338 km2. The area varies in topography from high mountains in the south-west to low-lying areas along the coast. The River Nairn is the main river in the bathing water catchment. It bisects the Nairn (Central) and Nairn (East) bathing waters. Prevailing currents tend to carry fresh water from the River Nairn eastwards towards Nairn (East) bathing water. However, the river can still influence the Nairn (Central) bathing water. Land use in the River Nairn catchment is largely agricultural. There is intensively farmed arable land in the lower catchment with rough pasture and livestock farming more common further inland. Approximately 1% of the bathing water catchment is urban.
