BAM wishes to thank Theatre Development Fund for its support of the 1995 Next Wave Festival. photograph taken by Dan Rest The Whispers of Angels is concerned with the search for hope in a time of AIDS, as seen through the last reminiscences and fears of a young, African American gay man who is dying b~fore his time. As illuminated through this main character's memories from his birth to the last moments of his life, the work deals with the pain of unrequited love (as seen through the relationship of a boy and his father), the overwhelming search for compassion (as seen through the eyes of a man dying alone), and the hope and pride given by a deep history remembered (as represented in the "whispering voices" of the man's ancestors, who guide him safely through his transition from life). David Rousseve David Rousseve David Rousseve, Artistic Director of David Rousseve/REALITY, is a choreo Director, grapher, writer, director, dancer and actor. Upon graduating magna cum Choreographer laude from Princeton University, he danced in the companies of Jean Erdman, Senta Driver, Kathryn Posin, Stephanie Skura, Yoshiko Chuma, and the Toronto Dance Theater. He has also appeared as an actor off Broadway, off-off Broadway and on network television. In 1988, David Rousseve created David Rousseve/REALITY. Reflecting the diversity and accessibility of the company, David Rousseve/R EA LITY has since performed to over whelming critical acclaim in venues ranging from intimate alternative theaters to vast opera houses throughout the United States and Europe including: The Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival, Serious Fun at Lincoln Center, Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley, Queen Elizabeth Theatre in South Bank Centre, London, the Biennale Festival in France, the Internationales Sommer Theater Festival in Hamburg, Germany, the Carlton Festival in Brazil, and throughout the United Kingdom. From 1987-1992, David Rousseve created the eight-part dance/theater series Pull Your Head to the Moon. .. Tales of Creole Women, which culminated in Urban Scenes/ Creole Dreams, a critical and popular success at the 1992 Brooklyn Academy of Music Next Wave Festival. In the Spring of 1992, the PBS series Alive TV commissioned a film adaptation of Pull Your Head to the Moon, which was broadcast nationally and won "First Place: Film/Choreography" at IMZ International Dance Film Festival in Frankfurt, Germany. David Rousseve has created new works for Pittsburgh's Dance Alloy (Meet the Composer), Zenon Dance Company, and the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble. In 1996, new commissions include the Atlanta Ballet and Ririe Woodbury Dance Company. As a teacher of dance and theater, David Rousseve has served on the faculties of Princeton University, Bates Dance Festival, the University of Maryland, Randolph-Macon Women's College and UCLA. He has received fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts (1991) and the National Endowment for the Arts (1990-97). B.J. Crosby New Orleans entertainer B.J. Crosby began her singing career in the Baptist Performer church where she won many awards for her gospel singing. Ms. Crosby has performed world wide in concerts and jazz festivals in such places as Hong Kong, Brazil, Holland, Italy, Germany, France, England, Sweden and the Caribbean. Her performing career includes extensive theatrical, film, and television experience, notably Heatwave; The Long Hot Summer; The Life of Romare Beardon; The Bill Cosby Show; The Arsenio Hall Show; Family Matters; and Lady B.J. Sings Lady Day, A Tribute to Billie Holiday. Ms. Crosby is currently performing on Broadway in a principal role in the new musical review Smokey Joe's Cafe. Her cast album of Smokey Joe's Cafe has been newly released on Atlantic Records; a dance single called Find Your Way has been released on Bullet Records; Lady B.J. Sings Lady Day, A Tribute to Billie Holiday with Ellis Marsalis, on Rounder Records (with whom she won an Ace Award) and He's Right on Time with Reverend Daryl Coley on Sparrow Records plus Satisfied and Sweet Soul Baby on Dal Jac Records. Yvette Glover Yvette Glover began singing gospel music at a very early age under the Performer tutelage of her mother who was a minister of music in one of Newark, New Jersey's largest churches. She has performed throughout the United States and in Morocco, North Africa where she gave a command perfor mance before King Hassan. Yvette has appeared as guest artist with Brenda Bufalino and the American Tap Dance Orchestra, Ted Levy and Friends and the Tribute to Jimmy Slyde, and with her son tap dancing sensation Savion Glover, just to name a few. She often headlines her own jazz-gospel show at such clubs as "LaPlace on tile Park" in New York City and "Trumpets" in Montclair, New Jersey. Last spring Yvette made her acting debut in Urban Scenes/Creole Dreams with David Rousseve/REALITY and also toured with the company to Brazil where their performances were over whelmingly received. Besides Savion, Yvette has two other wonderful sons Carlton and Abron. All of her achievements past, present and future are because of God, who is first in her life. Gregg Hubbard Gregg Hubbard, a native of Canton, Ohio, graduated from North Carolina Dancer School of the Arts with a BFA in dance. He has danced with numerous companies and has performed in music videos, operas and commercials. Most recently Gregg choreographed an off-Broadway revue for "Theater by the Blind," as well as a feature film directed by Tim Reid, When We Were Colored, which was released in the Spring of 1995. Keigwin Keigwin, this artist, formerly known as Larry Keigwin, recently graduated Dancer from Hofstra University with a BA in dance. He also dances with Robin Becker and Company. Keigwin hopes this performance demonstrates to his mother that he need not apply to graduate school just yet. Leah Nelson Leah Nelson is originally from Harare, Zimbabwe. In 1988 she was invit Dancer ed to the International Choreographer's Workshop at the American Dance Festival. She obtained her BFA at North Carolina School of the Arts. Leah is pleased to have worked with Shawn McConneloug, Cathy Young, Mabel Robinson, Bebe Miller, Mark Dendy and Gerry Girouard. She has taught various age groups touring Zimbabwe, and in North Carolina, Brussels, Belgium, and Minneapolis. Her work has been shown at Studio 6A and the Walker Art Center. She is very happy to be a part of REA LI TY . Kyle Sheldon Kyle Sheldon was born in Philadelphia. He graduated with a BA in Radio/ Dancer Television/Film from Glassboro State College. In Philadelphia he danced for five years with the Melanie Stewart Dance Company and performed as guest artist with Ann Vachon/Dance Conduit. Kyle has studied with Melanie Stewart, Betty Jones, and Doug Varone, among others. Since moving to New York in 1991 he has also worked with Bill 1. Jones. Julie Tolentino Wood Julie Tolentino Wood is of Filipino/EI Salvadorian decent, originally from San Dancer Francisco. In New York she has worked with Amy Pivar, Margarita Guergue, and Katiti King. She collaborated with Sondra Loring on Marks of My Civil ization Part I, performed at Judson Church, St. Mark's Church, the Wexner Center and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Julie appeared in Red Hot and Blue's "Safe Sex is Hot Sex" poster, Gran Fury's "Kissing Doesn't Kill" and Gay Games '94 ad campaigns. She is co-director/manager of Ron Athey's Martyrs and Saints and 4 Scenes in a Harsh Life, co-author of the Lesbian Aids Project's Women's Safer Sex Handbook and owner of Clit Club/NYC. Charmaine Warren Charmaine Warren, a native Jamaican, holds a Bachelor's Degree as well Dancer as a Master's Degree in dance and dance research. She plans to continue her historical studies in dance from the Jamaican/African perspective. Since returning to Jamaica as a lecturer, teacher of dance, and a member of the internationally known National Dance Company of Jamaica, Charmaine began extensive research on the dances of her country. Subsequently, she began lecturing on Jamaican dance in Harlem: "From Ritual to Reggae-Don't Give Up the Fight," for students of dance and their parents. She has also lectured on the subject at the Studio Museum in Harlem. In addition, Ms. Warren has lectured on western dance history at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre Foundation. Charmaine would like to thank Tony and her Mom. Lavelle Zeigler Lavelle Zeigler, actor, writer, and director, has previously worked with David Performer Rousseve/REALITY. He appeared in Pop Dreams both at La Mama and Serious Fun! at Lincoln Center.
