Eparchy of St. Josaphat in Parma (USA) Held an Annual Pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Holy Cross 1 Ч. 38 (1642) Рік XXXV No. 38 (1642) Vol. XXXV Неділя, 29 вересня, 2019 Sunday, September 29, 2019 Eparchy of St. Josaphat in Parma (USA) Held an Annual Pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Holy Cross Faithful, clergy, and religious from the States of Ohio and Pennsylvania of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of St. Josaphat in Parma and beyond took part on September 21, 2019 – Saturday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, according to the Gregorian calendar – in the pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Holy Cross of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Youngstown, Ohio. The pilgrimage, led by Bishop Bohdan Danylo, Eparch of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of St. Josaphat in Parma and organized by Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Youngstown, Ohio under the leadership of the church’s pastor, Fr. Lubomyr Zhybak. 2 The pilgrimage began with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy presided over by Bishop Bohdan Danylo and concelebrated by Chorbishop Anthony Spinosa, Director of the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon of the Maronite Catholic Church in North Jackson, OH; Very Rev. Michael Polosky, Protosyncellus of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of St. Josaphat in Parma and Pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ambridge, PA and Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Aliquippa, PA; Msgr. Robert J. Siffrin, Vicar General of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Youngstown and Pastor of St. Edward Roman Catholic Church in Youngstown, OH; Fr. Joseph Rudjak, Pastor of the Holy Apostles Roman Catholic Parish in Youngstown, OH; Fr. David Misbrener, Pastor of St. Peter of the Fields Roman Catholic Church in Rootstown, OH; Fr. Lubomyr Zhybak, pastor of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Youngstown, OH and St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Austintown, OH and Deacon Donald Billy in addition to many lay and religious, who participated in the pilgrimage (Fr. Ivan Chirovsky, a priest of St. Josaphat Eparchy, was present at the Liturgy, together with some candidates to the diaconate, but did not concelebrate it). Confessions were heard by Fr. Vsevolod Shevchuk, pastor of the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church in Akron, OH and the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in Solon, OH. The responses were provided by a joint choir of Holy Trinity Church in Youngstown and Saint Anne Church in Austintown under the leadership of Mrs. Marie Woloszyn, the choir director from Holy Trinity Church. During his homily (edited), Bishop Bohdan said: “That Сross of Christ is a salvation for each and every one of us, but the Cross of Christ is also a sign of salvation for those, who follow Christ as a community,” stated the bishop. At the end of the Liturgy, Fr. Lubomyr Zhybak expressed his gratitude to Bishop Bohdan for leading this year’s pilgrimage as well as thanked the clergy and all other pilgrims for participating in the spiritual event. I am pleased to publish the latest financial statements, for the year 2014, on the Eparchy’s website to help the faithful gain a clear understanding of the Eparchy’s financial state. I am also publishing alongside the financial statements a letter from Father Steven Paliwoda, the Eparchy’s Financial Officer, to explain many items in the financial statements in detail. I encourage you to read Father Steven’s letter in conjunction with the financial statements. It is important for the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saint Josaphat in Parma to be a good steward of the gifts entrusted to it, and transparent about its finances. Having our finances audited by an independent accounting firm, and publishing our financial statements online and sending them to all of our parishes, puts the Eparchy amongst the most financially transparent Catholic dioceses in the world. In the same way, it is also very important for each parish to be transparent in its finances and accountable to the faithful, who support the Church and for whom the Church exists to serve. I would like to make the following general observations about the financial state of the Eparchy. The Eparchy’s Financial Situation Continues to Improve, but is Still Precarious. During the years 2011-2013, the Eparchy paid about half of its debts.

Ronald N. Beshara Page 2 of 27 OUR PAST ... Maronite history has its origins in Antioch where the early Christians received their faith from Saint Peter after he fled persecutions in Jerusalem. According to Acts 11:26 the followers of Christ were called Christians for the first time in Antioch. The seat of the Church remained there for 7 years before being transferred to Rome. Prior to 741 there were 7 Syro-Catholic Popes, 5 of them were Syro-Maronites. Antioch was a Hellenistic city while Edessa to the Northeast maintained a Syriac-Aramaic culture followed by the Christians who later were to be called Maronite. Their tradition followed the language, theology and liturgy of Christ and His Apostles thus reflecting their mentality. After divisions and persecutions the Christians gradually migrated to the safety of the mountains in Lebanon. Thus the liturgical roots of the Maronite Church can be traced to Antioch and Edessa. In the 4th century Saint Maron, a friend of Saint John Chrysostom, fought the heresies that beset the Catholic Church at that time, particularly Arianism, Monophysitism and Nestorianism. His monastery became the principal center of pastoral and spiritual care for the area. The monks and followers, then called Maronites, were continually called upon and willing to sacrifice their lives for their religious convictions.

His Grace, Most Reverend John Bura was born on 12 June, 1944 in Wegeleben, Germany. In 1950, his family moved to the United States and settled in Jersey City, NJ. After completing elementary and middle school, he entered St. Basil Minor Seminary in Stamford, CT. From 1965 to 1970 he studied Theology at The Catholic University of America and resided at St. Josaphat Seminary in Washington, DC. He was ordained to the Presbyterate on 14 February, 1971 for the Archeparchy of Philadelphia. Following ordination he served in various pastoral and administrative positions as teacher of religion and the Ukrainian language and Vice- Rector of St. Basil Minor Seminary in Washington, DC; Rector of St. Josaphat Seminary in Washington, DC; pastor of Holy Ghost Church in Chester, PA and St. Nicholas Church in Wilmington, DE.     Robert F. Taft, S.J. Pontificio Istituto Orientale Piazza S, Maria Maggiore 7 00185 Rome ITALY PROFILE : Robert F. Taft, S.J., born in Providence, RI (USA) Jan. 9, 1932, entered the Society of Jesus on August 14, 1949. After receiving the MA and Licentiate in Philosophy, he taught from 1956-59 at Baghdad College, Baghdad, Iraq, followed by an MA in Russian Studies at Fordham University in NY (1961), and an MA and STL in theology in 1964. He was ordained to the priesthood in the Byzantine Slavonic (Russian) Rite in 1963. He is Professor- emeritus of Oriental Liturgy at the Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome, and founder and editor-in-chief of its Anaphorae Orientales series. He studied there his doctorate (1965-70), then did postdoctoral studies in Oriental Philology at the University of Louvain (1971-72). The bibliography of his publications and writings comprises over 800 titles written in English, French, and Italian, mostly scholarly publications on Eastern Liturgy, including 23 books, three of them co-authored. His writings have been translated into eighteen different languages. Fr. Taft is also Consultor for Liturgy of the Vatican Congregation for the Oriental Churches, and a member of several Vatican commissions and other editorial and advisory boards. Fr. Taft has received numerous ecclesiastical honors and academic awards, including three honorary doctorates and election as Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy, the highest honor the Academy confers in recognition of scholarly distinction.
