O’Neill During eight years of participation in Louisiana State University Peruvian expeditions my field companions and I have collected a number of specimens that represent extensions of known range for the species involved. Two of the specimens here reported are in the American Museum of Natural History in New York. All the others were collected by personnel of the Louisiana State University Museum of Zoology and deposited in that museum. Sub specific determinations have been made with the use of comparative material at these two institutions. Extensions of range represent departures from previously known status as given by Meyer de Schauensee (1966). Most of the specimens here reported came from two localities: (1) Balta, a Cashinahua Indian village on the Río Curanja (at the point where the streams known to the local Cashinahuas as the Xumuya and the Inuya enter the Río Curanja, lat. 10°08' S, long. 71°13' W, elevation ca. 300 m), Depto. Loreto; (2) Yarinacocha, an oxbow lake about 15 km by road NNW of Pucallpa, Depto. Loreto. Other localities are identified in the accounts of the species under discussion. Dean Amadon of the American Museum of Natural History kindly per mitted me the use of collections in his care. Charles E. O’Brien of the same institution and Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia supplied information pertaining to the status of certain species in Peru. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract.- Despite its vast extension and the rich fauna that it hosts, the Paraguayan Humid Chaco is one of the least studied ecoregions in the country. In this study, we provide a list of birds and medium-sized and large mammals recorded with camera traps in Estancia Playada, a private property located south of Occidental region in the Humid Chaco ecoregion of Paraguay. The survey was carried out from November 2016 to April 2017 with a total effort of 485 camera-days. We recorded 15 mammal and 20 bird species, among them the bare-faced curassow (Crax fasciolata), the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), and the neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis); species that are globally threatened in different dregrees. Our results suggest that Estancia Playada is a site with the potential for the conservation of birds and mammals in the Humid Chaco of Paraguay. Lowther, Field Museum Brood parasitism is an awkward term to describe an interaction between two species in which, as in predator-prey relationships, one species gains at the expense of the other. Brood parasites "prey" upon parental care. Victimized species usually have reduced breeding success, partly because of the additional cost of caring for alien eggs and young, and partly because of the behavior of brood parasites (both adults and young) which may directly and adversely affect the survival of the victim's own eggs or young. About 1% of all bird species, among 7 families, are brood parasites. The 5 species of brood parasitic “cowbirds” are currently all treated as members of the genus Molothrus. Host selection is an active process. Not all species co-occurring with brood parasites are equally likely to be selected nor are they of equal quality as hosts. Rather, to varying degrees, brood parasites are specialized for certain categories of hosts. Brood parasites may rely on a single host species to rear their young or may distribute their eggs among many species, seemingly without regard to any characteristics of potential hosts. Lists of species are not the best means to describe interactions between a brood parasitic species and its hosts. Such lists do not necessarily reflect the taxonomy used by the brood parasites themselves nor do they accurately reflect the complex interactions within bird communities (see Ortega 1998: 183-184). Host lists do, however, offer some insight into the process of host selection and do emphasize the wide variety of features than can impact on host selection. -

The aim of this study was to evaluate community structure of birds in different macrohabitats of ATTZs from a protected area in the Pantanal wetland, Brazil. The survey of birds was carried out in three types of macrohabitats: Erythrina fusca Lour. monospecific forest, shrubland and pioneer polyespecific forest, and flooded grassland. The bird community living within the ATTZ varied according to macrohabitat type and period of the wetland landscape. We emphasise the importance of this protected area to biodiversity. Employ greater environmental control is required, since the region is not exempt from direct and indirect impacts derived from the Upper Paraguay River Basin. The enigmatic Diademed Sandpiper-Plover in a remote valley was the bird of the trip (Mark Pearman) NORTHERN ARGENTINA 21 OCTOBER – 12 NOVEMBER 2016 TOUR REPORT LEADER: MARK PEARMAN Northern Argentina 2016 was another hugely successful chapter in a long line of Birdquest tours to this region with some 524 species seen although, importantly, more speciality diamond birds were seen than on all previous tours. Highlights in the north-west included Huayco Tinamou, Puna Tinamou, Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, Black-and-chestnut Eagle, Red-faced Guan, Black-legged Seriema, Wedge-tailed Hilstar, Slender-tailed Woodstar, Black-banded Owl, Lyre-tailed Nightjar, Black-bodied Woodpecker, White-throated Antpitta, Zimmer’s Tapaculo, Scribble-tailed Canastero, Rufous-throated Dipper, Red-backed Sierra Finch, Tucuman Mountain Finch, Short-tailed Finch, Rufous-bellied Mountain Tanager and a clean sweep on all the available endemcs. The north-east produced such highly sought-after species as Black-fronted Piping- Guan, Long-trained Nightjar, Vinaceous-breasted Amazon, Spotted Bamboowren, Canebrake Groundcreeper, Black-and-white Monjita, Strange-tailed Tyrant, Ochre-breasted Pipit, Chestnut, Rufous-rumped, Marsh and Ibera Seedeaters and Yellow Cardinal. Here, we monitored the daily calling activity of the Undulated Tinamou (Crypturellus undulatus) and the Chaco Chachalaca (Ortalis canicollis) during the dry and wet seasons in the Brazilian Pantanal. We aimed to assess the effects of climate predictors on the vocal activity of these focal species and evaluate whether these effects may vary among seasons. Air temperature was positively associated with the daily calling activity of both species during the dry season. However, the vocal activity of both species was unrelated to air temperature during the wet season, when higher temperatures occur. Daily rainfall was positively related to the daily calling activity of both species during the dry season, when rainfall events are scarce and seem to act as a trigger for breeding phenology of the focal species. Local inhabitants retain a vast knowledge about the bird richness surrounding them, as well as many of their ethological and ecological aspects, and can identify the importance of those birds to the maintenance of ecosystem integrity. The present study sought to document the traditional knowledge retained by members of the Labino community concerning the avifauna of the Delta do Rio Parnaíba Environmental Protection Area (APA), Piauí State, Brazil. We interviewed 76 male (51% of the sample) and 74 female (49%) residents. The interviewees indicated the occurrence of 97 bird species belonging to 21 orders and 40 families. Men could identify more bird species than women. Older individuals recognize more bird species than younger members of the community. Individuals with less schooling demonstrated greater knowledge of species richness than those with more formal educations. A very significant percentage (45%, n = 68) of the interviewees reported consuming native birds, principally Aramides cajaneus, Columbina squammata, and Zenaida auriculata. -

ABSTRACT: Assessments of population density and contact number of individuals of the Eared Dove Zenaida auriculata were conducted in areas of the city of Londrina and were compared with those of two other species of the family Columbidae (Columbina talpacoti and C. picui). Data were collected from distance sampling in linear transects of 2,000 m. Analyses of density were calculated using the program DISTANCE. The results show that C. talpacoti and C. picui were recorded in all months in urban areas, and less frequently in rural and pasture areas. Zenaida auriculata was the most frequently recorded species in all areas, showing high rates of population density with seasonal variations; density peaks were observed during September and January in the urban area (coinciding with the arrival of warmer days in the region), while in rural areas, density peaks were also recorded during November/ December, March and April/May — periods in which planting of soybean and maize, and the soybean harvest, and wheat planting in the region, occurred, respectively. -

CHESTNUT-BELLIED GUAN Penelope ochrogaster V/R10 This seemingly very rare guan occupies a broad but poorly defined area of central Brazil, inhabiting patches and galleries of semi-deciduous forest in drier areas. It could prove to have a low population, and has been recorded from only one protected area. DISTRIBUTION The Chestnut-bellied Guan is known from some scattered localities in central Brazil, from Goiás to western Minas Gerais and southern Mato Grosso. It possibly occurs also in adjacent Bolivia, where appropriate habitat is extensive (C. Yamashita in litt. 1987). In the following account localities are arranged from north to south, with coordinates taken from Paynter and Traylor (1991). Tocantins There is a record from Macaúba, Ilha do Bananal, May 1962 (specimen in MNRJ), this being within the confines of the Araguaia National Park, according to TAW (1986); and there are sight records of small numbers in the park from the late 1970s and early 1980s (R. S. Ridgely verbally 1986). Goiás There are two localities: the middle rio Paranã, near Monte Alegre de Goiás (mouth of the rio São Domingos), 1932/1933 (Pinto 1938, 1964; two specimens in MCZ), and Leopoldina (now Aruanã), rio Araguaia, July 1906 (Hellmayr 1908).
