On being a merit badge counselor

Being a merit badge counselor is one of the coolest volunteering opportunities in Scouting. Counselors introduce Scouts to a topic about which they are passionate and knowledgeable. At the very least, a merit badge counselor helps a Scout earn a merit badge for his sash and get one step closer to becoming an Eagle Scout. At the most, a merit badge counselor introduces a young man to a subject that could become a lifelong hobby or career.

To be merit badge counselor, you first need to register as an adult volunteer with your local council and complete Youth Protection Training. New counselors apply to be a counselor and existing counselors re-register annually. There is a BSA Guide for Merit Badge Counselors available, and free training Thursday March 9 from 6:30 to 8 pm in Downers Grove. More

Merit Badge Counselor Renewal Information All currently registered Merit Badge Counselors will receive a renewal notification in January. The notice will state that if a counselor wants to be dropped from the list of counselors, they should contact their District Advancement Chair and request to be removed from the list. Counselors desiring to remain a counselor do not need to respond unless they wish to add or drop a merit badge, or have a change in contact information. If there are changes, please follow the normal procedures of filling out and submitting the Merit Badge Counselor application and indicating the changes. If you have any questions or don't receive the renewal notification, please contact your District Advancement Chair.

New Cub Scout Advancements Offer Greater Flexibility The BSA announced advancement modifications to make the Cub Scout program more flexible for busy parents, den leaders, and Cubmasters.

The modifications were approved by the National Executive Committee of the Boy Scouts of America after one year of experience found the new Cub Scout program design successfully addressed many original concerns and opportunities for further improvement.
