The group is recognized since 2001 as a consolidated research group. The main field of expertise is in the development and application of early warning cell and molecular markers of pollution. The group has experience in the assessment and monitoring of biological effects of pollution (North Iberian Peninsula, Mediterranean Sea, North Sea), including accidental oil spills (Prestige) and industrial and urban wastes. The group promotes the Marine Station of Plentzia. We offer the following R+D+I services: -Assessment of environmental quality (marine, estuarine, and terrestrial environments). -Monitoring programmes of environmental pollution. -Toxicity testing (REACH legislation). -Determination of biological activity of chemicals. -Histopathological diagnosis of fish and shellfish diseases. -Scientific and technical advising. Areas: pollution, accidental spills, environmental toxicology, use of biomarkers, cell culture and in vitro systems, microscopy, molecular, cell and tissue organization of animals. -Scientific formation: Masters, postgraduate courses, specialization courses, PhD programme, laboratory training. -Estabulation and maintenance of experimental animals. This document was designed as a tool for assessing and guiding water management in Spain. Although Spain’s future water policy is outlined in the conclusions, the points mentioned refer only to quantitative aspects of water resources without considering the issue of quality. Nonetheless, the issue of river, reservoir, lake and groundwater pollution is taken into account in the assessment section. Amongst the problems related to water quality, the White Paper notes, among others, problems related with Directives 91/271/EEC and 91/676/EEC. A brief summary of the main issues addressed is provided below. Surface water and diffuse pollution. In general, diffuse pollution produced by agricultural and livestock raising activities (e.g.

  • Seasonality in Cell and Tissue-Level Biomarkers in Mytilus Galloprovincialis: Relevance for Long-Term Pollution Monitoring
Vol. 9: 203–219, 2010 AQUATIC BIOLOGY Published online June 1 doi: 10.3354/ab00245 Aquat Biol Seasonality in cell and tissue-level biomarkers in Mytilus galloprovincialis: relevance for long-term pollution monitoring Larraitz Garmendia, Manu Soto, Miren P. Cajaraville, Ionan Marigómez* ACBET Ikerketa-Taldea, Zoologia eta Biologia Zelularra Saila, Zientzia eta Teknologia Fakultatea, UPV/EHU, Sarriena auzoa Z/G, 48940 Leioa-Bizkaia, Spain ABSTRACT: Mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis were collected monthly in 2 localities in the Northern Iberian Peninsula, Oia (Galicia) and Mundaka (Basque Coast), from April 2005 to May 2006, to inves- tigate whether seasonal variability in biomarkers follows the same pattern at both geographical areas. The following battery of biomarkers was analysed: lysosomal membrane stability and struc- tural changes, intracellular neutral lipid accumulation, cell type composition in the digestive gland epithelium, structural changes of digestive alveoli and digestive gland histopathology. Additionally, gonad index was measured as a supporting parameter. Overall, results demonstrate that most stud- ied biomarkers showed similar seasonal variability pattern in both localities. Lysosomal membrane stability (labilisation period [LP]) and most histopathological conditions showed similar seasonal vari- ability patterns in both localities, although values of LP and prevalences of some parasites were higher in Mundaka. Data provide baseline values to be used as reference values for the biomonitor- ing programmes carried out in coastal areas from Galicia to the Basque Coast. It is concluded that for monitoring programmes based on biomarkers, samples must be taken at least twice per year (spring and autumn) to avoid the effect on biomarkers of the late stages of each reproductive cycle.

  • Basques in the Americas from 1492 To1892: a Chronology
Basques in the Americas From 1492 to1892: A Chronology “Spanish Conquistador” by Frederic Remington Stephen T. Bass Most Recent Addendum: May 2010 FOREWORD The Basques have been a successful minority for centuries, keeping their unique culture, physiology and language alive and distinct longer than any other Western European population. In addition, outside of the Basque homeland, their efforts in the development of the New World were instrumental in helping make the U.S., Mexico, Central and South America what they are today. Most history books, however, have generally referred to these early Basque adventurers either as Spanish or French. Rarely was the term “Basque” used to identify these pioneers. Recently, interested scholars have been much more definitive in their descriptions of the origins of these Argonauts. They have identified Basque fishermen, sailors, explorers, soldiers of fortune, settlers, clergymen, frontiersmen and politicians who were involved in the discovery and development of the Americas from before Columbus’ first voyage through colonization and beyond. This also includes generations of men and women of Basque descent born in these new lands. As examples, we now know that the first map to ever show the Americas was drawn by a Basque and that the first Thanksgiving meal shared in what was to become the United States was actually done so by Basques 25 years before the Pilgrims. We also now recognize that many familiar cities and features in the New World were named by early Basques. These facts and others are shared on the following pages in a chronological review of some, but by no means all, of the involvement and accomplishments of Basques in the exploration, development and settlement of the Americas.

LABURPENA Erdi Aroko populatzearekin lotutakolana historialariek elementu “monumentalarekin” garatutako interpretzioarekin bat dator; erregistro arkeologiko, pasaia edo beste elemetu batzuekin eta haien prozesu sozialak eta ekonomikoen sortutako interpretazioa eta identifikazioare- kin lotura egin gabe.
