  • Kiev 1941: Hitler's Battle for Supremacy in the East
Kiev 1941 In just four weeks in the summer of 1941 the German Wehrmacht wrought unprecedented destruction on four Soviet armies, conquering central Ukraine and killing or capturing three-quarters of a million men. This was the battle of Kiev – one of the largest and most decisive battles of World War II and, for Hitler and Stalin, a battle of crucial importance. For the first time, David Stahel charts the battle’s dramatic course and after- math, uncovering the irreplaceable losses suffered by Germany’s ‘panzer groups’ despite their battlefield gains, and the implications of these losses for the German war effort. He illuminates the inner workings of the German army as well as the experiences of ordinary soldiers, showing that with the Russian winter looming and Soviet resistance still unbroken, victory came at huge cost and confirmed the turning point in Germany’s war in the east. The son of Italian American immigrants, Basilone was born in Buffalo, New York, before spending the majority of his civilian life in Raritan, New Jersey. At only 20 years old, Basilone enlisted in the United States Army and served a little more than two years in the Philippines. After a brief return to civilian life, Basilone enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in July of 1940. After two years of garrison duty in the United States and Cuba, Basilone found himself on a transport ship headed to the island of Guadalcanal in the South Pacific. For his “extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry” during a lengthy Japanese assault on the American defensive lines on the night of October 24-25, 1942, Basilone was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.2 Following the eventual American victory on Guadalcanal, the Marine Corps sent Basilone back to the United States for an extensive Medal of Honor tour, with the intended purpose of motivating Americans to buy war bonds and support the war effort in general.

JPR Crimes of the Wehrmacht: A Re-evaluation Alex J. Kay and David Stahel Abstract: Of the up to eighteen million men who served in the Wehrmacht during the Second World War, ten million were deployed at one time or another between 1941 and 1944 in the conflict against the Soviet Union, a theatre of widespread and sustained mass violence. In order to determine how extensive complicity in Nazi crimes was among the mass of the regular German soldiers, it is necessary first of all to define what constitutes a criminal undertaking. The sheer brutality of the German conduct of war and occupation in the Soviet Union has overshadowed many activities that would otherwise be rightly held up as criminal acts. Keywords: Wehrmacht, criminality, mass violence, occupation, Second World War Introduction he advances made over the last two decades in our under- standing of German occupation policies in the Soviet Union and the crimes committed there by the Wehrmacht, the SS, police forces, the civil administration, agricultural authorities Tand NSDAP agencies have been immense, yet the discussion in serious scholarship regarding the extent of Wehrmacht participation in atrocities on both an individual and a collective level could not be more divided. Christian Hartmann revisited the discussion with his study of five German divisions on the eastern front in 1941 and 1942, which concluded that criminal conduct was largely a feature of rear-area security formations and not the front-line units, which made up the greater part of the troops deployed in the east. Hartmann even wonders whether the Wehrmacht can be regarded as a perpetrator organisation of the National Socialist regime at all.1 Though Hartmann certainly This article is an updated and expanded version of a book chapter by the authors, ‘Reconceiving Criminality in the German Army on the Eastern Front: 1941–1942’, in Mass Violence in Nazi-Occupied Europe, ed.

ABSTRACT BUNN, CATHERINE BREKKE LEWIS. “The Form Changes, the Spirit Remains the Same”: German Officer Training, 1919-1938. (Under the direction of Dr. Noah Strote). As the German Army lay in ruins in the aftermath of World War I, German generals recognized the army’s desperate need for reinvention. This thesis traces the key changes that occurred in the structure and training of the German Army to argue that self-preservation was a defining theme in how the German Army restructured itself, trained its officers, and conceived of warfare. Tracing major themes of continuity and discontinuity in training, structure, tactics, and doctrine from 1919 to 1938, this thesis examines the influence of political ideology, technological advancements in warfare, doctrinal advancements in infantry policy, and the shifts in education in German war schools in this period. © Copyright 2019 by Catherine Bunn All Rights Reserved “The Form Changes, the Spirit Remains the Same”: German Officer Training, 1919-1938 by Catherine Brekke Lewis Bunn A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty of North Carolina State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts History Raleigh, North Carolina 2019 APPROVED BY: _______________________________ _______________________________ Dr. Noah Strote Dr. Daniel Bolger Committee Chair _______________________________ Dr. David Ambaras DEDICATION This thesis is dedicated to my parents; though they have given me the world, I count their love of history as one of their greatest gifts. ii BIOGRAPHY Catherine Bunn was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. Operation Barbarossa and Germany’s Defeat in the East Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union, began the largest and most costly campaign in military history. Its failure was a key turning point of the Second World War. The operation was planned as a blitzkrieg to win Germany its Lebensraum in the east, and the summer of 1941 is well known for the German army’s unprecedented victories and advances. Yet the German blitzkrieg depended almost entirely upon the motorised panzer groups, particularly those of Army Group Centre. Using previously unpublished archival records, David Stahel presents a new history of Germany’s summer campaign from the perspective of the two largest and most powerful panzer groups on the eastern front. Stahel’s research provides a fundamental reassessment of Germany’s war against the Soviet Union, highlighting the prodigious internal problems of the vital panzer forces and revealing that their demise in the earliest phase of the war undermined the whole German invasion. DAVID STAHEL is an independent researcher based in Berlin.
