Hollywood, Health & Society Hollywood, Health & Society is a project at the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center that provides entertainment industry professionals with accurate and timely information for health storylines through expert consultations and briefings, panel discussions and online tip sheets. Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the NIH’s National Cancer Institute, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Health Resources and Services Administration Division of Transplantation, the project recognizes the profound impact that entertainment media have on individual behavior and works to encourage accurate health messages in popular entertainment media like daytime and primetime TV shows and telenovelas. The entries are 2004 Primetime Comedy evaluated on the following criteria: “No More Wire Hangers,” One on One * Potential benefit to the viewing audience 2005 Daytime Drama * Entertainment value “Autism Spectrum Disorder Storyline,” All My Children 2005 Primetime Drama “Volcano,” Without A Trace Research on Primetime and Daytime 2005 Primetime Minor Storyline Television Viewers “Leaps of Faith,” 7th Heaven Key findings from the 2005 Porter Novelli HealthStyles 2005 Primetime Comedy surveys reveal that more than half of regular primetime “Prescription for Trouble,” George Lopez drama/comedy viewers (those who watch two or more times a week) learned something about a health issue or disease 2005 Telenovela from a TV show. About two-thirds of African American “Graciela Refuses to Have Cancer,” Anita, no te Rajes and Hispanic regular viewers reported learning something. Nearly one-third of regular viewers took one or more actions 2006 Daytime Drama as a result of a TV health storyline, with African Americans “Lucinda’s Breast Cancer,” As the World Turns and Hispanics reporting action more often than Whites and women viewers reporting action more often than men. 2006 Primetime Drama Discussion is the most common response to TV storylines, “Harvest,” Numb3rs but viewers also report that they did something or told someone else to do something to prevent a problem, 2006 Primetime Minor Storyline called a hotline number for more information, or visited “BRCA – Breast Cancer Risks,” ER a doctor or a clinic. His most recent book, Self-Efficacy: The Exercise of Control, presents efficacy belief as the foundation of human moti- vation, performance attainments, and emotional well-being. He has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He is the recipient of seventeen honorary degrees.
