Emerging Talent Makes a Splash Youth Regionals Team Bath AS swimmers competed in Plymouth in the Swim England South West Regional Championships over the weekend of 4-6 May with the competition revealing some star performances from emerging talent with Championship titles for both Niamh Ward (15yr, 200 Back) and Olly Watts (14yr, 800 Free) who were both competing for the first time at Plymouth. Entering the competition on 2.23.93, Niamh’s 200 Backstroke heat swim produced a new PB which she promptly slashed again in the finals by a further two seconds to produce her golden swim in a time of 2.21.14. Having already contributed in the full set of Boy’s Relays, Olly Watts pulled out a new LC PB on the final afternoon winning Gold in the 800m Freestyle in a time of 9.15.71. Double Silver Medallist Finlay Saunders (16) also showed solid progression through the competition knocking 3 seconds off his 200m Backstroke PB and a second off his 100m Backstroke time to win his medals. Backstroke medals kept coming with Mark Edmundson’s Bronze (17+yr, 200 Back) and Niamh’s second medal, a Silver in the 15yr 100 Back. Having already swum in the 100 Free (6th) and 100 Fly (6th) finals, Rhiannon Bowen demonstrated her signature grit in the 17yr 200 Freestyle Finals winning a further Silver medal for the Team in a time of 2.06.98. Competing for the first time in Plymouth 15yr swimmers Lydia Crawford (5th 200 Fly, 8th 100 Fly), Katie Butcher (7th 50 Back, 10th 100 Back) and Niamh Ward (1st 200 Back, 2nd 100 Back, 8th 100 Free) all achieved Finals swims with 16yr boys Arthur Bown-Mazzoni (8th 200 Free) and Finlay Saunders (2nd 200 Back, 2nd 100 Back, 5th 50 Back, 6th 800 Free) adding further to the Team’s Finals tally. With many swimmers entering the Open (17+yr) age group for the first time the Championships provided an additional challenge. Un- phased, our Open swimmers produced solid performances through heats and finals with 17+yr final swims for Madeleine Aldam- Gates (9th 50 Free), Rhiannon Bowen (2nd 200 Free, 6th 100 Free, 6th 100 Fly), Mark Edmundson (3rd 200 Back), Ethan McNeil (6th 400 IM, 8th 200 Fly), Peter Mould (9th 200 Breast) and Alex Sharman (7th 200 Fly).

You will also find the standings of the first three places in all events for men and women at the Olympic Games followed by several classifications which are listed either by the number of titles or medals by swimmer or National Federation. It should be noted that these standings only have an historical aim but no sport signification because the comparison between the achievements of swimmers of different generations is always unfair for several reasons: 1. The period of time. The Olympic Games were not organised in 1916, 1940 and 1944 2. The evolution of the programme.

In my time, I have forgotten appointments, telephone numbers, speeches, punch lines of jokes, directions, even whole chapters of my life. Up until recently, I was the most absent- minded, forgetful person you could imagine. I once saw a cartoon of two people dancing rather awkwardly at the Amnesiacs' Annual Ball.

  • Plymouth Law Review (2008) 1 HOW EFFECTIVE ARE ANTI-DOPING
Plymouth Law Review (2008) 1 HOW EFFECTIVE ARE ANTI-DOPING MEASURES IN SPORT IN THE UK? Louise Harris Abstract It is said that „doping undermines the values of sports.1 Competitors, who cheat through the use of drugs, in particular performance enhancing drugs, are automatically presumed „guilty‟ for failing or missing a test, subsequently being left to defend their name and innocence. In the United Kingdom there is no specific law targeting drugs in sport. Statutes that exist are concerned with the general possession, supply and trafficking of illegal substances in a wider sense. This article therefore examines how effective anti-doping measures are in sport in the UK. Keywords: anti-doping, drugs in sport, World Anti-Doping Code Introduction Athletes have been using performance enhancing substances in sports since the ancient Greeks and Egyptians. Substances from plants and animals were used to gain an advantage over opponents and combat injuries to continue competing. „Considered cheating by purists and necessary by some athletes,‟2 drug use in sport has continued into the twenty-first century. After the cycling debacle of the Tour de France 1998,3 the International Olympic Commission (IOC) reached a decision in Lausanne 1999 to create an independent anti-doping regulation body; the World Anti- Doping Agency (WADA). Supported by governments, public authorities and other bodies, WADA assumed control of the Prohibited List of drugs from the IOC in 2004. It created the World Anti-Doping Program and associated Code, a unique, non- 1 World Anti-Doping Agency, Copenhagen Declaration on Anti-Doping in Sport http://www.wada-ama.org/en/dynamic.ch2?pageCategory.id=272 all website addresses checked 24 November 2008.

Plymouth City Council Plymouth Aquatics Strategy 2010 – 2020 Final Draft March 2010 Strategic leisure Part of Scott Wilson Limited Plymouth City Council Aquatics Strategy 2010 – 2020 Forward Welcome to our Aquatics Strategy. The Plymouth Aquatic’s Strategy sets out the strategic direction we want the Council and its partners to take over the next ten years with regards to the sports of; swimming, diving, octopush, synchronised swimming, water polo, learn to swim, life saving and a range of other water based activities which require access to managed water space for training and active participation. The city is entering into a new exciting era of aquatic sports with significant investment in key indoor pool facilities, such as the Life Centre and the refurbishment of the pool at the University College Plymouth St Mark and St John. The Plymouth Aquatics Strategy provides a framework for future aquatic programmes across the city and the sub-region. It focuses on the activities taking place in existing swimming pools and sets out recommendations for how these activities can be improved and developed. The Strategy is seen as a crucial document in seeking to ensure that the new pool facilities maximise community engagement in active participation, but also reinforce Plymouth’s status as a city which can support and develop Plymouth’s long and successful history of elite athletes; such as Tom Daley and Sharon Davies. The Plymouth Aquatics strategy reflects the Council’s aspirations for increasing participation in physical activity and for addressing health inequalities as set out in the City’s Corporate Plan 2009.
