Big Shout Out To Our Volunteers

The annual National Volunteers Week took place 1-7 June and gave us a chance to say a big thank you to all those volunteers who help run our Club. Like most Clubs we could not exist without the free time, passion and tireless work done by our volunteers and as ever we’re always in need of more help. We launched our new commitment to volunteering scheme this year and we thank all parents who have responded so far either by paying the opt out fee or by registering their hours with our volunteer coordinator Mark Birkett ([email protected]). If you still have to get your hours in, do it right away as this seasons contributions will be concluded at the end of July.

Emerging Talent Makes a Splash Youth Regionals

Team Bath AS swimmers competed in in the Swim England South West Regional Championships over the weekend of 4-6 May with the competition revealing some star performances from emerging talent with Championship titles for both Niamh Ward (15yr, 200 Back) and Olly Watts (14yr, 800 Free) who were both competing for the first time at Plymouth. Entering the competition on 2.23.93, Niamh’s 200 Backstroke heat swim produced a new PB which she promptly slashed again in the finals by a further two seconds to produce her golden swim in a time of 2.21.14. Having already contributed in the full set of Boy’s Relays, Olly Watts pulled out a new LC PB on the final afternoon winning Gold in the 800m Freestyle in a time of 9.15.71. Double Silver Medallist Finlay Saunders (16) also showed solid progression through the competition knocking 3 seconds off his 200m Backstroke PB and a second off his 100m Backstroke time to win his medals.

Backstroke medals kept coming with Mark Edmundson’s Bronze (17+yr, 200 Back) and Niamh’s second medal, a Silver in the 15yr 100 Back. Having already swum in the 100 Free (6th) and 100 Fly (6th) finals, Rhiannon Bowen demonstrated her signature grit in the 17yr 200 Freestyle Finals winning a further Silver medal for the Team in a time of 2.06.98.

Competing for the first time in Plymouth 15yr swimmers Lydia Crawford (5th 200 Fly, 8th 100 Fly), Katie Butcher (7th 50 Back, 10th 100 Back) and Niamh Ward (1st 200 Back, 2nd 100 Back, 8th 100 Free) all achieved Finals swims with 16yr boys Arthur Bown-Mazzoni (8th 200 Free) and Finlay Saunders (2nd 200 Back, 2nd 100 Back, 5th 50 Back, 6th 800 Free) adding further to the Team’s Finals tally.

With many swimmers entering the Open (17+yr) age group for the first time the Championships provided an additional challenge. Un- phased, our Open swimmers produced solid performances through heats and finals with 17+yr final swims for Madeleine Aldam- Gates

(9th 50 Free), Rhiannon Bowen (2nd 200 Free, 6th 100 Free, 6th 100 Fly), Mark Edmundson (3rd 200 Back), Ethan McNeil (6th 400 IM, 8th 200 Fly), Peter Mould (9th 200 Breast) and Alex Sharman (7th 200 Fly).

In addition to the individual events, Team Bath AS also produced an impressive set of relay performances which added to the 17+yr line up with some Age Group swimmers making up the 14/16 teams and appearing in Plymouth for the first time. An unfortunate accident for Mark Edmundson during the event sadly meant a premature end to his Championships and the 17+yr Medley Relay Team’s race, but the spirit and determination meant our teams still produced impressive swims with the majority pulling off individual unofficial PBs to do their best for the Team.

Onwards & Upwards The Focus on Development continues… The Team Bath AS focus on training and development for swimmers and the wider community goes from strength to strength as our regular program of successful clinics and courses continue. Our fourth Age Group Development Clinic ‘Ready to Race’ with Chris Alderton (to be held on 6 July) sold out within a day of launch and follows on from the sell out success of the previous Clinics hosted by Development Coach Liam Willcox. Liam’s latest Clinic ‘Improve Your Starts’ on 15 June saw over 20 swimmers aged 10-13 focus on the start, underwater and breakout phase of racing in the University of Bath’s 50m pool with Liam also taking his training expertise wider afield delivering a bespoke session for the Paragon School in Bath. If you’d be interested in arranging a bespoke training session for swimmers at your school – contact [email protected] With the continued focus on training Team Bath AS hosted 16 candidates from across the region for the blended learning Swim England Swimming Assistant (Coaching) course. Full of enthusiasm the candidates from a range of local Clubs arrived for the course on Friday 14 June with tutor Steve Greenfield ahead of a full weekend of training to complete the face to face modules of the course. Attending from Team Bath AS were 3 volunteers – Somerset Young Volunteer of the Year 3rd place winner Peter Mould, Team Physiologist Eva Piatrikova and Academy Poolside Assistant Jess Rogers (Norton Radstock). Team Bath AS delegates were supported with funding from Somerset ASA and the region using the Swim England SW bursary scheme and Swim Mark vouchers. Team Bash AS gained Approved Training Centre status last year after helping to run Level 1 and 2 courses for several years previously. The Club hosted the course which was organised by Swim England South West Development Officer, Stephanie Gadd in association with the Institute of Swimming. Many thanks to Chris Alderton, Head Coach and Liam Willcox, Lead Development Coach for presenting the sessions and all our Performance Swimmers who were fantastic as usual and assisted the process. Team Bath AS look forward to welcoming even more candidates for the Swim England Coaching Swimming course in September.

Coffee with.... The Coach

We met up with our Development Coach and Team Fashionista, Liam Willcox to find out just what makes him tick….

Coffee? Mine’s a Matcha Frappuccino, sweetened, but hold the cream!

What would be your 5 word intro? Shoes say lots about you!

What’s your top Swimming achievement? When I was in learn to swim at Wells, I swam my first mile and finished so far ahead of the other kids that by the time everyone else had finished swimming, I was in the café halfway through eating my fishy whales and chips!

What’s the thing you’re most proud of? Being able to help people achieve their goals and seeing the results! And… taking my shoe collection from 70 down to 30 or 35 pairs….. or maybe it’s 40!

Lots of our swimmers already know you have a thing for shoes - what else do you do away from the pool? Fine dining and a long stroll in the park! (that’s Liam for shopping and skateboarding!)

If you could only take one pair of shoes with you - which ones would you choose? (long pause while thinking, then asks…) ‘Can I have two? ‘Three?’ ….. (long pause again…..) ‘It would have to be – Adidas Ultra Boost EQT Pusha-T and Nike x Sacai LDwaffle’

What’s your...

Claim to fame/Shameless name drop? When I was officiating at Sports Relief at the London Aquatic Centre I was sat in the Green Room chilling with Freddie Flintoff (who was handing out the Quality Street), Seb Coe, Olly Murs and – I even got a hug from Helen Skelton!

Dinner with anyone - table for 4 - who would you invite? ‘Kanye West, A$AP Rocky, Virgil Abloh …. And I’d also have to have Tyler, the Creator; - that’s four - I’ll sit on a stool!’

What would you eat? Salt and Pepper Squid and a side of Nachos

Guilty pleasure? Making a Murderer on Neflix (and believing I can solve the crime!)

Who’s your biggest professional inspiration? Everyone who has helped me on my journey and given up their time to help me achieve my goals.

If you could have 10 minutes with any sports person who would it be? P.J. Tucker (basketball) and Conor McGregor (boxer) – to see their clothes and shoe collections.

And finally...

Your view on socks and sliders? Only on a comfy day and only if single-branded

And… What would the Liam shoe-aholic alternative be? Anything with Boost…(and Crocs….joking!)
