Professor’s Comment This course will portray the Holocaust as a defining moment in history for all humanity—Jews and non- Jews, gentile believers and Jewish believers. Following an overview of the historical context of the Holocaust, specific topics related to the Holocaust itself will be considered, such as its causes and victims; timeline of events; the struggle to emigrate; perpetrators, bystanders, resisters, and rescuers; means of survival; liberators and witnesses; aftermath; and connection to the State of Israel. The class will become familiar with and discover the significance of various means of reflection on the Holocaust—such as oral history, art, music, literature, media, and poetry—and will address specific post-Holocaust issues and realities such as post-Holocaust theology, Holocaust denial, and the “new” anti-Semitism. Who could breathe at a time when man was engaged in murdering the holy witness to God six million times?"1 hen Abraham Joshua Heschel entered the national spotlight as a pro- found religious thinker and strident social activist, he bore the garb W and look of an Eastern European Jew. A man of short stature, Rabbi Heschel looked the way religious Eastern European Jews have for hundreds of years: the traditional dark-colored suit with the white fringes of his prayer shawl hanging out beneath his sport coat, a skullcap hidden beneath a black full- brimmed hat, and a long, thick gray beard. An American leader, Heschel was, in every sense, a European Jew, steeped in the traditional Jewish communities of both Warsaw and Vilna. -

HUNTINGTON FORGOT ABOUT: A CRITIQUE OF “JUDEO-CHRISTIAN” CIVILIZATIONAL VALUES By DOMINIQUE REBEKAH HOFFMAN A Thesis submitted to the Department of International Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation with Honors in the Major Degree Awarded: Summer, 2020 1 SAMUEL P. HUNTINGTON is the Eaton Professor of the Science of Government and Director of the John M. Olin Institute for Strategic Studies at Harvard University. His theory was published first in a paper titled Clash of Civilizations in 1993. He later expanded upon his theory in a book titled The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order. My thesis challenges Huntington’s oversight in not classifying a Jewish civilization, which he justifies as part of Western civilization based on shared “Judeo-Christian” values. Huntington’s work is widely debated, and not universally accepted. This essay assumes Huntington’s thesis is a lens to view international relations, this thesis does not hypothesize nor debate the validity of Huntington’s thesis in its entirety, rather seeks to challenge his classification of civilizations. For work that argues Huntington’s thesis is valid, please read the work of Robert D. Kaplan titled Looking the World in the Eye. For work that challenges the validity of Huntington, please read the work of Edward Said titled Clash of Ignorance (2001). -

Although the authorship is unknown, this prisoner’s words hold considerable weight. Winter 2018 Holocaust Responses RELI 4850 B / RELI 5850X Religion College of Humanities Wednesdays 11:35 - 14:25 p.m.; Room Paterson 2a46 Professor Deidre Butler Office Paterson Hall 2a49 Office hours: Mondays 2:00-3:00 pm, Wednesdays 2:30-3:00 pm. or by appointment Course email: [email protected] Course description: Seminar in Western Traditions: Holocaust Responses This seminar explores the historical development of religious, philosophical, and cultural responses to the Holocaust in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, with an emphasis on Jewish perspectives and the questions the Holocaust raises for Jewish life today. The seminar moves chronologically and thematically through a range of religious, philosophical and cultural responses to the Shoah. These include voices from the Holocaust period itself, from Jewish and Christian sermons, letters within religious communities, rabbinic response, and Nazi propaganda films. Post-Holocaust responses include Jewish, Christian and Muslim philosophical, theological and cultural responses, feminist theology, documentary and popular film, video survivor testimony, literature –fiction and memoir, museums and public memorials, official commemoration and educational curricula. These responses constitute a richly layered intertextual discourse that plays out within and among particular communities as well as participating in public narratives about the Holocaust in Canada, Israel and around the world. As such, the seminar focuses on interdisciplinary questions of history, memory, representation, identity, and public life. Note that this course brings together 4th year and MA level students. A. THE TANAK AS THE FOUNDATION OF JUDAISM THE TANAK, OR THE JEWISH BIBLE, stands as the quintessential foundation for Jewish life, identity, practice, and thought from antiquity through contemporary times. The five books of the Torah, or the Instruction of G-d to the Jewish people and the world at large, constitute the foundation of the Tanak. According to Jewish tradition (Exod 19—Num 10), the Torah was revealed to the nation Israel at Mount Sinai while the people were journeying from Egypt through the wilderness of Sinai on their way to return to the land of Israel to take up residence in the land promised by G-d to their ancestors, Abraham and Sarah; Isaac and Rebecca; Jacob, Rachel and Leah; and the twelve sons of Jacob. The four books of the Nevi’im Rishonim, or the Former Prophets, provide an account of Israel’s life in the land from the time of the conquest under Joshua until the time of the Babylonian exile, when Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed and Jews were exiled to Babylonia and elsewhere in the world. The four books of the Nevi’im Ahronim, or the Latter Prophets, provide an assessment of the reasons why G-d chose to exile Jews from the land of Israel and the scenarios by which G-d would choose to restore Jews to the land of Israel once the exile was completed. The eleven books of the Ketuvim, or the Writings, include a variety of books of different form and purpose that address various aspects of Jewish worship, critical thought, future expectations, history, and life in the world, both in the land of Israel and beyond. -

Assessing the Roots and Implications of a Recurring Critique. Abstract Jewish ‘Holocaust Theology’, a body of texts produced by North American and British religious thinkers since the 1960s, has been repeatedly accused of using the Holocaust to lend moral leverage to separate debates. This article examines the history of this recurring critique and considers its relationship with wider features of Holocaust Theology as a mode of writing. It is suggested that Holocaust Theology’s habitual appeal to notions of transformative horror both encourages this critique to recur and, in turn, raises questions regarding the future of the discourse. Introduction 2014, the year that would see the centenary of the First World War’s outbreak, began with a public argument among British politicians concerning the legacy of the war. On 2nd January Michael Gove, then Education Secretary, published an article in the Daily Mail newspaper accusing the Left of distorting history to suit its own needs. -
