Friesner University of Pennsylvania This paper discusses the transnational identity of immigrants from the former Soviet Union in Montréal. The changing language policies of Québec with regard to French and English are shown to create a complex situation for immigrant groups, which have historically assimilated into the population. The earlier motivations for this outcome are considered, while the impact of language policies on the assimilation patterns in terms of both acquisition and use are discussed. The changing educational policies regarding the historical- ly Anglophone Jewish schools are also examined with respect to impact on the Russian Jewish immigrant population. The overall language policy and planning goals of Québec, the well-established Jewish population, and Russian Jewish immigrants, are then considered.
