It brings together academics, administrators, students and support staff from all disciplines and at all levels in HE. Its aim is to further the position of women in HE and change the climate of HE to one where all women can reach their full potential. WHEN offers all women teaching, learning and working in HE the opportunity to share information and to network for example via its annual conference. It aims to raise awareness and share good practice on a broad range of issues which women in HE have themselves identified as important. WHEN was set up in 1988 at the University of Cambridge. It has also been based at the University of Nottingham and at the University of Central Lancashire. WHEN has initiated a series of books with Taylor & Francis Publishers beginning with Changing the Subject: Women in Higher Education, edited by Sue Davies, Cathy Lubelska and Jocey Quinn. These publications combine selected conference papers and are a good opportunity for women to get their research published and share their knowledge. Chapters demonstrate and examine processes of equity and change, in relation to organizational culture, curriculum development, knowledge pro- duction, and the needs and contributions of diverse women. Black women, disabled women, Irish women, mothers and older women, and women in male- dominated disciplinary locations such as management education, theorize and share experiences. In so doing they document and challenge the often implicit obstacles to equality and feminism in the academy.

As a figure, feminism has multiple, changing, and disputed referents. The name in the dominant modern sense given by the Oxford English Dictionary —“advocacy of the rights of women (based on the theory of equality of the sexes)”—came rather belatedly into English: 1894–95, according to the OED’s entries for the substantive and adjectival forms of the word. This philological fact may surprise you (it did me), since many students of feminism, including one in this col- lection (Laura Mandell), date the birth of feminism in its modern form to the European Enlightenment. Yet more specifically, but also more partially, with reference to the coordinates of “national” language and geography as well as to those of linear time, feminism’s “birth” has been (and is here too) provisionally located in the writings of Mary Woll- stonecraft, in particular her famous Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792).

  • Feminism, Objectivit and Economics
    FEMINISM, OBJECTIVITY AND ECONOMICS Economics is gender-biased in its definition, methods and models. The emphasis on questions of choice and markets, on the use of mathematical methods, and on models based on individual, rational action reflect a way of conceptualizing the world which has a distinctly masculine slant. Julie Nelson extends feminist analysis of the influence of masculine norms on the development of Western science, by scholars such as Evelyn Fox Keller and Sandra Harding, to the specific case of economics. As well as evaluating the abstract core models of neoclassical economics, this book includes case studies on topics including the theory of the family, income tax policy and macroeconomics. However, the book does not simply berate economists for the discipline’s failings; alternatives such as discarding all current, economic practice, or setting up an economics solely for women or for ‘women’s issues,’ are explicitly and emphatically rejected. Rather, it presents the outlines of a less gender-biased discipline which would be richer, more useful and more objective. Such a discipline, informed by feminist theory, would be an improved one, for all practitioners and all subjects. While in most disciplines the feminist critique is well advanced, this is the first full-length, single-authored book to focus on gender bias in contemporary economics. Its author is a practising academic economist and a leader in the recent development of feminist economics. Julie A.Nelson is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of California, Davis and Brandeis University. She was joint editor of Beyond Economic Man (University of Chicago Press, 1993) and has published widely in leading economics and feminist journals, including Econometrica and Hypatia.

Abstract Although the classed dimensions of ‘taste’ have, following Bourdieu, been widely discussed, expressions of disgust at perceived violations of taste have been less frequently considered in relation to class. This paper considers various expressions of disgust at white working-class existence and explores what they might tell us about middle-class identities and identifications. I argue that the narratives of decline and of lack present in such representations can be seen in terms of a long-standing middle-class project of distinguishing itself. Drawing on Bourdieu’s critique of Kantian aesthetics, I argue that the ownership of ‘taste’ is understood as reflecting true humanity, and as conferring uniqueness. Ironically, however, this uniqueness is only achieved through an incorporation of collective, classed understandings. OPEN LETTER to the University of Liverpool concerning threatened redundancies of academic staff In January the University of Liverpool announced 47 redundancies of academic staff. These staff were identified by grant income and citation metrics and sent letters notifying them they had been targeted for redundancies without the opportunity to review the criteria or the specific information held about them. The University has not made allowance for individual circumstances such as workload or sickness which might have affected these metrics, nor has it given any indication of any meaningful plans to make allowance for such factors. The University used a narrow time window over which to calculate these fluctuating metrics, and a proprietary citation metric tool from Elsevier to arrive at field-weighted citation metrics which are, as a consequence, opaque and difficult to review for appropriateness. We write as members of the wider academic community - researchers who collaborate with the University of Liverpool on grants and papers, who read and cite work from Liverpool, examine PhD students, review courses, attend conferences with colleagues from the University of Liverpool. We are dismayed by the University of Liverpool’s actions, which ​ can only have a chilling effect on UK research. Our belief is not just that the redundancies are financially unnecessary and apparently illegal, nor just that they are fundamentally callous and unfair to deploy against staff who have received consistently positive annual appraisals and have been working harder than ever during a global pandemic.
