Local non-emergency numbers Police: Fire: In the event of an EARTHQUAKE: 1. If you are indoors, remain inside. Immediately duck, cover and hold under a desk, table or other sturdy shelter. If there is no such shelter, stand under the nearest doorway. 2. Evacuate the building if directed to do so. 3. If you are outside, get into the open, away from buildings, trees, walls and power lines. Sit or lie down and brace yourself. 4. If you are in your car, pull to the side of the road, away from overpasses, bridges and power lines. 5. Try to avoid broken glass and falling objects. 6. Avoid using matches or a lighter — there might be a gas leak. 7. Avoid touching electrical wires which may have fallen. 8. Do not use the telephone except for emergencies. In the event you receive MAIL CONTAINING A POWDERY SUBSTANCE: 1. Do not shake or empty the envelope. 2. Do not throw the envelope away. 3. Isolate the specific area of the workplace so that no one disturbs the item. Call 911. 4. Evacuation of the entire workplace is not necessary at this point. 5. Wash your hands with soap and warm water for one minute. 6. Do not allow anyone to leave the office that may have touched the envelope. 7. When emergency responders arrive, they will provide additional instructions. In the event of a FIRE: 1. Upon discovery of a fire, alert all other nearby personnel and your supervisor. Immediately call 911. Be sure to give the fire department the exact location of the fire. 2. Follow the office plan and evacuate the building through the nearest safe exit. 3. If the fire does not pose an immediate threat to safety, fight it until the fire department arrives. In the event you receive a THREATENING PHONE CALL, please take note of the following: 1. Time call was received. 2. Phone number of line receiving incoming call. 3. Exact words of caller. 4. Time caller hung up. If the situation permits, try to ask the following questions: 1. If there is a threat made to an employee, try to find out the exact nature of the threat and reason for the threat. 2. If the call is a bomb threat, remember that almost all such calls are hoaxes or pranks. However, all threatening calls must be treated seriously and handled quickly. Try to find out: a. When is the bomb going to explode? b. Where is the bomb now? c. What kind of bomb is it and what does it look like? d. Why did the caller place the bomb? 3. Person receiving the bomb threat should try to keep the caller on the line. Delay the caller with statements like: “I’m sorry, I didn’t understand you. What did you say?” 4. Listen to the caller’s voice for identification. a. Age/sex of caller. b. Tone of voice. c. Accent or impediment. d. Background noise. e. Is the voice familiar? 5. Call 911 and notify your supervisor immediately.
