ANNUAL TRUSTEES REPORT 2019-20

WEBSITE We were delighted our new website went live https://www.angusfedswri.org/ at the end of April 2019.

LUNDIE GAVEL The winners of the Gavel went jointly to and SWIs who both had 7 new members each.

ROYAL HIGHLAND SHOW Two members (Tannadice & SWI and Westmuir SWI) had successes with their knitted items and embroidery.

The local OUTDOOR BOWLS round was won by the triples team from and runners up were Letham & District. These teams represented Angus at the national final in Dumfries on 5th August.

The local GOLF competition was won Auchterhouse/Aldbar; runners up were Kilry. These teams represented Angus at the national final on 27th August at Shishkine Golf Club, Isle of Arran.

PUBLICITY We had a stall at the Farmers Market on the 8th and 13th July and the Flower and Food Festival. Over 100 names were gathered of those interested in finding out more. All were contacted with their local Institute and times/place.

H&H CONFERENCE This conference took place in the Beach Ballroom, Aberdeen on 11-12th September 2019. Angus had members with notable success in the competitions:

Winner of the Warnock trophy Winner of the Lena MeikleJohn trophy Highly commended in Whitecross trophy for sewing and commended equal in the Whitecross trophy for knitting Highly commended in Lena Meiklejohn trophy Commended in Lena Meiklejohn Trophy Also, SWI entertained in the evening.

BABINGTON BEQUEST 4 Institutes applied and were awarded £40 each to support their Institutes’ syllabus.

ACWW FUNDRAISING EVENTS , national President asked us all to help fundraise towards the SWI hosting the European ACWW conference in October 2021 in Clydebank. Institutes have already held successful events and to date over £1800 has been raised and forwarded to HQ.

Angus Federation has undertaken to produce 150 tartan corsages for presentation to delegates at the ACWW European conference.

CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS We congratulated , , Padanaram and Farnell who were all celebrating their 100 year birthday in 2019 and joined them for a happy celebration of the event. A centenary birthday card was designed by an Angus SWI member and presented to each Institute at their birthday party.

RURALYMPICS – were held on 19th October at Webster’s High School. There were 24 entries after several call offs. 5 teams got over 800 points! First Kingsmuir SWI 2, 2nd Lundie SWI, 3rd Auchterhouse SWI 1, 4th equal Airlie SWI and Auchterhouse SWI 2.

INDOOR BOWLING – was held on 20th Oct in Indoor Bowls. 7 teams took part. Winners were MFK (a co-operative Mattocks/ , Farnell and Kilry). Runners up were Lunanhead SWI. Both teams would have represented Angus at the National finals in Falkirk on 20th April 2020.

OFFICE BEARER INDUCTION EVENING The Federation hosted an induction evening for Institute Office Bearers (President, Secretary, Treasurer) on 23rd October 2019 to clarify the roles and responsibilities entailed. This event was very well attended and received.

NATIONAL QUIZ/ MATTER OF OPINION COMPETITIONS This National Final was held in Fochabers on 26th October 2019. Angus was represented by & Nevay in the Matter of Opinion National Finals and and Airlie in the quiz final.

QUIZ – was held in Strathmore Hall, Forfar on Monday 4th November. We had a fabulous 44 teams competing. Winners were Fowlis & Liff SWI, 2nd Lundie SWI, 3rd Kirriemuir SWI. £764 profit was made to cover storage costs. The winning team will represent Angus at the National Quiz in 2020.

CURLING – was held on 9th Nov in Forfar Indoor Sports. 6 teams took part with Auchterhouse SWI winners and Tarfside SWI runners up. Both teams represented Angus at the National final Perth on 2nd March. Winners of the low road were Lundie SWI and the Bye Pass the Dolly mixtures who made up a team at the last minute.

The JEAN PETERS SALVER was presented to Auchterhouse SWI who won the syllabus competition this year. This competition was judged by President & Vice President, Perth & Kinross Federation. 2nd place SWI, 3rd place Farnell SWI.

The BABINGTON TROPHY was awarded to Auchterhouse SWI for their poem on the theme “Friendship”. In 2nd place was Padanaram SWI and 3rd Letham & District SWI. This competition was judged by an English teacher at Webster's High School, Kirriemuir. It had been planned to display the winning entries at the Federation Show.

CAROLS AT THE MART – Angus Federation participated in this event organised by The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution.

VARIATIONS ON A THEME Held on 3rd February in Letham Village Hall on the theme of ‘Journeys’. Winners were from Aldbar SWI and runners up Letham & District SWI. Aldbar would have represented Angus at the National Finals in the Corn Exchange, Cupar on 25th April.

WALKING NETBALL Two members (Cortachy SWI and Auchterhouse SWI) attended a taster session on 4th March along with a few others from Angus. It was very much enjoyed, and a local session will be organised after the pandemic.

JUNIOR DIPPERS A small committee has been formed to introduce a Junior Dippers group in Angus. A September 2020 start was planned but has been postponed until after the pandemic.
