  • Supervillain Detention!
Supervillain Detention! Your team has just helped Elemento, a superhero, to capture Dr. Chrono, a local villain who has the superpower to speed up time and can produce water from her fingers. This can cause some metals to rust and crumble instantly. She can also control metals that are magnetic. She must remain in our custody until she can be taken to the police for questioning. There is a small room that we can use but we will need to keep the door closed so she can’t sneak out while we rest. Several types of nails/fasteners are available but we must be careful. Elemento is vulnerable to aluminum (it is toxic and makes him weak). His superpower is heat which is used to melt any plastic he touches. Your task is to examine the available nails/fasteners and suggest what Elemento should use to secure the door to Dr. Crono’s place of temporary confinement. You will make a recommendation based on evidence from your tests and observations. Complete the data table below about the strengths and weaknesses of Dr. Chrono and Elemento. Dr. Chrono Elemento In your group, brainstorm at least five characteristics or properties of six materials that you can test. Here are the materials that are available for testing: • • Aluminum foil Aluminum nail 1 Next Generation Science Standards • Battery and bulb • Magnets • Common Iron nail • Plastic screw or anchor • Concrete screw • Sandpaper • Copper nail • Small cups of water and lime • Galvanized nail or lemon juice • Wooden dowel or lathe • Small magnets • Hand lenses • Stainless steel nail • Tape Chemists use specific characteristics or properties to describe and classify materials.

Any aspect of Comics and Graphic Novels in Popular Culture will be considered. Possible panel/discussion topics: Comics podcasts. With so much comics-related news on websites, another form that has taken off in recent years includes the podcast/radio show. How well do these podcasts relate comic/graphic novels news? We have podcasts on the Golden Age of comics, superhero comics, and most recently The Comics Alternative, which goes beyond superheroes to discuss the independents. What impact do podcasts like this have? The concept of the super-villain! There is much scholarly literature on the superhero but not nearly as much on the super-villain. Yet a superhero is usually only as good or interesting as the super-villain counterpart. Stan Lee said that coming up with interesting super-villains is often difficult. Why? How have super-villains in comics changed over the years? What makes a supervillain like the Joker or Magneto so compelling? We would welcome full panels on supervillains. There has been a recent rise in superhero movies, What is the future of the superhero-based movie? Will the superhero movie continue to be popular? Has the superhero film run its course? Why are superhero movies still popular? Pedagogical approaches to teaching graphic novel content.

  • Put on the Mask
Alternate Scripts - Superheroes PUT ON THE MASK An Alternate Script for The Play's The Thing By Brian Engard For more information about The Play's The Thing and Magpie Games, visit us at www.magpiegames.com/theplay Alternate Scripts - Superheroes Biff! Bam! Pow! We all know what superheroes are. They can do things no normal person can, stand against forces the rest of us can't hope to combat, represent the ideals of our society -- even if they're ideals we've forgotten ourselves -- and they act as a beacon and an example for the rest of us. Superheroes also get into great, exciting fights and wear colorful Spandex uniforms. For all the dizzying number of superheroes (and villains!) out there, they're each subtly different from one another, each driven by his or her own motivations and background. Oh sure, eye lasers and the ability to fly are flashy and exciting and cool, but it's the human drama, the relationships and mortal struggles of these sometimes godlike beings that grounds them, makes them relatable, and makes us keep watching them. Sometimes superhero drama comes from the hero's need to see justice -- or vengeance -- done. Sometimes it's a need to protect that which the hero holds dear. Sometimes it's the struggle that comes with suddenly being thrust into a mantle of great power, and the enormous responsibility that comes with it. The only difference between a superhero and a supervillain is how the individual character reacts to these motives, how far she or he is willing to go to see justice -- or vengeance -- done, what lengths the character is willing to go to to protect something, or how the hero -- or villain -- handles that mantle of power and responsibility.

TEACHERS’ GUIDE with Common Core State Standards Connections boxERS & SAInts by GENE LUEN YANG Full Color Paperback Graphic Novel Diptych Boxers: ISBN 978-1-59643-359-5 / $18.99 Saints: ISBN 978-1-59643-689-3 / $15.99 Also Available As a Boxed Set: ISBN 978-1-59643-924-5 / $39.99 InTRoDUCTIon Gene Luen Yang’s diptych, Boxers & Saints, collects two pieces of historical fantasy set in China during the Boxer Rebellion. The Boxer Rebellion was not only an important moment in Chinese and British history, but it is also significant because of its effect on world history generally. Very seldom is the Boxer Rebellion discussed at length in high school or even introductory world history courses at the college/university level given the emphasis on studying the development and trajectory of “Western” civilization. However, helping students to understand the Boxer Rebellion can create great insight into the philosophical issues at play in wars for inde- pendence, including the United States’ own fight for independence from Britain. Literary characters help us to make important affective connections with texts, and we can come to understand a great deal more about how wars affect everyday people by engaging with historical fiction—whether in the realm of the fantastic or the mundane. Further, historical fiction allows us to contemplate the ethical and moral decisions and the extreme actions that characters make in times of war, allowing us to consider and evaluate their behavior. Boxers & Saints helps readers understand the Boxer Rebellion and its importance to history, and Yang also encourages us to think more deeply about the nature of war, rebellion, and the decisions we make in such times of crisis.
