Union Internationale de la Marionnette Organisation Internationale non gouvernementale bénéficiant du statut consultatif auprès de l’UNESCO fondée en 1929 Electronic Newsletter of the General Secretary N° 10 – November 2012 To all UNIMA National Centres: please forward this electronic Newsletter to all your members. Dear UNIMA Members, A unifying project has emerged from a UNESCO working group seeking to promote a culture of peace. Puppets Pledge Themselves to Peace On September 21st, 2013, to celebrate the World Day of Peace, puppet companies, individual artists, friends of puppetry and UNIMA Centres are invited to participate in this event: ''Puppets Pledge Themselves to Peace'', to be held in the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. This quest for peace resonates with the respect for cultures and desire for fraternity inscribed in the Preamble to the UNIMA statutes. Invited by Mr Michel Thouzeau, the president of this UNESCO committee, and on behalf of all of you, I have enrolled UNIMA as a partner of this important event. Already more than 40 NGOs and associations have confirmed their participation and involvement with the organising committee. It is rare that puppeteers from around the world receive invitations from an international organisation. I recall that in 1995, under the impetus of Jacques Félix, the incumbent UNIMA Secretary General, and inspired by the UNIMA Armenian Centre, a huge world march was organised in collaboration with UNESCO to celebrate this special day and to support a culture of peace. The UNIMA President and I will be in Paris on September 21st, 2013 to participate in the many activities planned for this day.

Open Call to Young Writers I. Introduction Open call to young puppet theatre authors aged 18-30! 2019 marks the 90th anniversary of the creation of the Union Internationale de la Marionnette (UNIMA). To honour this date, UNIMA is holding an open competition for young writers interested in authoring a script or concept for puppet theatre that will be performed as part of the UNIMA 90th anniversary celebrations. II. Objective UNIMA is looking for a special script/concept for puppet theatre. This project will be workshopped into four distinct productions that will be performed in four separate geographical regions of the world: Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Americas. III. Theme Authors are asked to use as theme, subject matter, point of departure, or inspiration for their work the story of Max Jacob and Jean-Loup Temporal: two puppeteers, one German, the other French, who found themselves on opposing sides and who suffered the horrors of World War II. A short synopsis of the story is attached at the end of this document. Additional information regarding these individuals can be found on the Internet, including on the following site: wepa.unima.org This story is open to your individual interpretation. It can be adapted to any time period and to any historical or fictional characters. Keep in mind as you conceive your play that we also wish to promote the art of puppetry. IV. Jury One of the scripts/concepts will be selected by an international jury specially created for this project. The jury will be composed of 7 international authors, performers and/or puppetry specialists.

What do these transnational puppeteers, who represent “India” in international forums such as UNIMA, choose as their foci and how do they relate to older traditions of puppetry? Karen Smith is Chair of the UNIMA-International Publication & Contemporary Writing Commission. In September 2017 she launched her editorial project, World Encyclopedia of Puppetry Arts in French, English, and Spanish online (https:// wepa.unima.org). Kathy Foley is professor of Theatre Arts at University of California, Santa Cruz. Her research was supported in part by the UCSC Arts Research Institute and Committee on Research. This report will focus on North Indian puppetry innovators since the 1980s, a period that has seen a rapid transition in North India from traditional to more contemporary forms. The four most influential Delhi-based puppeteers from that period, all of whom are still active, are detailed—Dadi Pudumjee, Ranjana Pandey, Puran Bhatt, and Anurupa Roy. While the intent is descriptive, the information will also show their connected paths and concerns.
