It includes information on the growth form, vegetation types, in-country distribution, distribution range, plant parts used, and other uses of species besides medicinal. Species were recorded for remote and hitherto under-researched areas. This dataset can be used as primary source guide for the biological and ecological contexts of ethno-medical research in Guinea-Bissau and West Africa. 1. Data The comprehensive list of plant species used in traditional medicine in Guinea-Bissau is presented in Table 1, focuses on biological and ecological aspects of the original dataset. It identifies medicinal and non-medicinal uses of recorded species, as well as the plant parts used, growth form, main vegetation types and geographical distribution. The dataset was specially prepared for a recent study (see [1]), based upon information gathered during fieldwork performed in the country, from 1990s to the present, by the authors, complemented with data from herbarium vouchers (LISC Herbarium, University of Lisbon) as well as from published sources. Samples were collected in various geo- morphological areas covering a wide range of vegetation types in Guinea Bissau, inhabited by more than thirty ethnic groups. 2. Experimental design, materials and methods 2.1. Study area Guinea-Bissau is located in the Northern Intertropical Zone of West Africa. It borders on the Republic of Senegal to the North, the Republic of Guinea to the East and South and by the Atlantic Ocean to the West [2]. It covers 36,125 km2 and the country encompasses continental mainland (North, South, and Eastern regions) and a group of 40 islands, the Bijagós Archipelago (Fig. 1A). Accepted 24 March, 2009 This paper presents the results of an assessment of the ethnobotanical uses of some plants recorded in upper Nyong valley forest implemented by the Cameroon wildlife conservation society project (CWCS). Forestry transects in 6 localities, followed by socio-economic study were conducted in 250 local inhabitants. As results, medicinal information on 140 plants species belonging to 60 families were recorded. Local people commonly use plant parts which included leaves, bark, seed, whole plant, stem and flower to cure many diseases. According to these plants, 8% are use to treat malaria while 68% intervenes to cure several others diseases as described on. There is very high demand for medicinal plants due to prevailing economic recession; however their prices are high as a result of prevailing genetic erosion. This report highlighted the need for the improvement of effective management strategies focusing on community forestry programmes and aims to encourage local people participation in the conservation of this forest heritage to achieve a sustainable plant biodiversity and conservation for future posterity.

A compiled check list of these plants including their Latin names, families, parts used, medicinal uses, and name in different Nigerian states is the main purpose of this study. All available information about either the traditional medicinal plants or ethnobotanical surveys in Nigeria was consulted. The study showed that 325 species and 95 families of medicinal plants were recognized as being used by most of the people in Nigeria for the treatment of various common diseases. Fabaceae has the largest number of species (42), followed by Asteraceae (22), Euphorbiaceae (20), Acanthaceae (13) and Apocynaceae (12). The largest genera were Euphorbia (6 species), Cola and Hibiscus (5 species for each), Albizia, Acacia, Combretum and Ficus (4 species for each), Acalypha, Allium, Clerodendrum and Cleome (3 species for each). The study revealed that traditional medicinal practices have a wide acceptability among the Nigerian people, probably because they believe in its effectiveness. The medicinal uses are varied, and the plant parts that are used ranged from leaves, roots, stem, bark to fruits only, or a combination of two or more in a species or with those of other species.

The objective of the present work, carried out in Psittacanthus linearis (suelda con suelda), a representative species in the seasonally dry forest (SDF) from the north of Perú, was to study aspects of in vitro tissue culture, carry out preliminary phytochemical analysis, and assess antibacterial activity. Seeds of individuals of P. linearis, which used Prosopis pallida (algarrobo) as host plant, were collect- ed and used to induce in vitro seed germination, clonal propagation, callus induction and organogenesis. Stems, leaves and fruits of individuals of P. linearis were dried, powdered, and subjected to ethanol extraction. Posteriorly the extract was first recovered with ethanol and the remnant with chloroform, which formed the ethanolic and chloroformic fraction. A preliminary phytochemical screening was performed and preliminary antibacterial studies with Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeru- ginosa were carried out and their results are discussed. This is the first report about in vitro tissue culture, phytochemical analysis and antibacterial activity of P. linearis. Inconsistence in its activities has however, been suggestively linked with some factors. Hence, this study was carried out to establish the effect of some extrinsic factors on the antibacterial activities of T. bangwensis against some diarrheal causing bacteria. Antibacterial activity of T. bangwensis, collected from some parts of Nigeria was determined by standard agar-diffusion method. Results from this study showed a significantly higher zone of bacterial inhibition with chloroform extract when compared with ethanol and aqueous extracts (P<0.05). Higher antibacterial activities was also observed with extracts obtained from air dried plants than those obtained from sun dried and oven dried plants (P<0.05). Steaming method of extraction produced a significantly higher zone of bacterial inhibition than cold and hot methods of extraction (P<0.05).

Documenting medicinal plant species used in treating various health conditions among the local people. Methods: Information was obtained from mainly the local population, the traditional healers and other experienced persons through interviews, formal and informal discussions and field excursions. Results: Seventy one plant species were reported for use in the treatment of various diseases in the study area. These plant species belongs to 41 families, with Asteraceae being the most represented. Roots were ranked the commonest plant part used. Oral administration was the most frequently used route of administration. A total of 41 different health conditions were reported to be treated by use of medicinal plant species. Thirty nine percent of the recorded plant species were reported for treating stomach related ailments. Conclusion: The use of medicinal plants in primary healthcare is still a common practice in Ngai and Otwal Sub Counties. The trust they have is built on the curative outcome properties claimed, poverty and armed conflict that lead to inadequate healthcare facilities. The generation gap caused by the over 20 years of insurgency in the area has brought about knowledge gap on the usage of medicinal plant species between the young and the older generation.

According to the Cameroon forest law, more than 30% of natural area must be transformed into park and reserves. In the process of transformation, ecological studies can be conducted to evaluate potential resources available. This paper highlighted some results of a floristic survey conducted in the Upper Nyong valley through the Cameroon wildlife conservation project (CWCS), in order to evaluate the ecological and ethnobotanical uses of forest products and derived resources. The methodology used was based on linear transects and quadrats. As a result, 352 useful plants were inventoried and categorized into medicinal, food, traditional furniture, threatened and industrial plants. As implications and relevance to management, this study would help in the implementation of protected forest network coupled with the decentralization of forest resources. This could be the most sustained alternative for the conservation of this heritance from generation to generation.
