Graphic Novel Collections in Academic ARL Libraries
Graphic Novel Collections in Academic ARL Libraries Cassie Wagner This study examines the extent to which ARL academic libraries collect graphic novels. Using a core list of 176 titles developed from winners of major comics industry awards and a library-focused “best of” list, the holdings of 111 ARL academic libraries were searched using the librar- ies’ online catalogs. Results suggest that most of the libraries studied do not aggressively collect graphic novels. Also examined were associations between date of publication, prior serialization, overall collection size, monograph budget, and ARL ranking and graphic novel holdings. To better serve scholarly research in this area of increasing interest, libraries will need to reexamine their collecting policies. ne of a handful of art forms Comics have undergone a renaissance whose development began in recent years. FRENCH COMICS FRAMED FESTIVAL NEW YORK CITY SEPT. 27 – NOV. 5, 2016 Illustration © Christophe Blain 2016 FRENCH COMICS FRAMED In 1889, Richard Felton Outcault, creator of the legendary Yellow Kid, moved to Paris to study art. He came back to the US with a brand new outfit: a beret and a cape. In Manhattan 1952, Morris met René Goscinny: thus Lucky Luke found his new writer, who would also go on to create Asterix and many more iconic heroes. Comics and bande dessinée have always been entwined, keeping up a constant communication across the ocean. Although comics artists may share their work and keep track of each other’s production, these exchanges might not be quite so accessible to the general public. Well, we’d like to make them available to everyone. After all, stars such as The Smurfs, Tintin, Blacksad and Persepolis were born and raised in Europe before conquering the US. William Stout CURRICULUM VITAE SELECTED FILM CREDITS 2010 Lilly’s Light, (production design for a PBS children’s television show) 2006 Pan’s Labyrinth, creature and set designs (contributed to the film’s achieving two of its three Academy Awards). Also created creatures for the American sci-fi horror film Stephen King’s The Mist. 2005 Designs for The Prestige helped the film garner an Academy Award nomination 2000 Stout was the key character designer for the computer-animated feature Dinosaur 1997 Men in Black, design of Edgar, one of the major alien characters 1975 – 1995 Stout worked on dozens of feature films, including both Conan films, First Blood, Predator, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Hitcher, and Invaders From Mars. He also production designed the Masters of the Universe film Over the years William Stout has been invited to multiple film festivals as Artist Guest of Honor and appears in about a dozen “Making of…” documentaries SPECIAL PROJECTS Stout was invited as a Special Guest, Guest of Honor and Special Artist Guest to numerous conventions and trade shows including Comic-Con, MondoCon, Dragon Con, Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo, CTNx (Creative Talent Network Expo), Comic Art Convention in Avilés, Spain and the Breda Strip Festival in the Netherlands.
